The term here means a sliding-jaw clamp for holding workpieces during assembly—not a tool-securing safety attachment that is also sold under the name “aluminum bar clamp.”
What to compare when choosing an aluminum bar clamp
Opening capacity is the maximum space between the jaws, while reach (also called throat depth) is how far a jaw extends from the bar to contact the work. Check both against the workpiece and the way you plan to position the clamp; a clamp with ample opening may still have too little reach for a particular setup.
- Opening: Select a size that accommodates the work and any cauls or other components in the setup.
- Reach: Compare jaw depth separately from opening capacity.
- Adjustment: Look for the release and sliding-jaw arrangement that suits how often you reposition the clamp.
- Construction: Check the bar and jaw materials on the exact model. Products described as aluminum clamps can combine aluminum bars or bodies with steel components.
- Force rating: Treat a published figure as a claim for that named product, not as a standardized cross-brand test result.
How the listed woodworking clamps differ
These examples show why the label “aluminum bar clamp” does not describe one uniform specification. Product details below are manufacturer or retailer listings, not independent comparative test results.
| Clamp | Opening or capacity | Reach | Construction and adjustment | Published force claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pony Jorgensen Aluminum Bar Clamp, models #3524, #3536, #3548, #3560, #3572 | 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 in., respectively | 1-5/8 in. | 1-5/16 by 13/16-in. anodized aluminum bar; the product page describes notches used by the tail-stop spring. | 1,000 lb. clamping force, as listed by Pony Jorgensen. |

Specifications come from the product listings: Pony Jorgensen, Harbor Freight, Woodpeckers, and StewMac. Harbor Freight says its specifications are approximate and subject to change. Product pages do not establish that the force figures were measured under the same conditions, so they should not be used as a direct performance ranking.

Choosing a size and adjustment style
Match the opening to the whole setup
Measure the assembled work at the point where the clamp will sit, including any cauls or other pieces that take up space. Pony Jorgensen lists openings from 24 to 72 inches across the cited series; its model number corresponds to the listed opening. Harbor Freight’s “24-inch” clamp, by contrast, is listed with a 20-inch clamping capacity. Check the stated capacity for the exact product rather than assuming the product name equals its usable opening.
Choose reach for where the clamp must contact
A 1-5/8-inch reach or throat depth appears on the Jorgensen and Harbor Freight listings, but that is a specification of those examples, not a universal feature of aluminum bar clamps. If the jaw must reach farther across a panel or assembly, confirm the model’s reach before buying.

Consider how you will reposition the jaw
Harbor Freight describes a quick-release mechanism and stops at roughly one-inch intervals. Jorgensen describes notches engaged by a tail-stop spring. Woodpeckers lists a movable head and an Acme-thread screw. These descriptions indicate different adjustment arrangements; choose based on how you expect to set and tighten the clamp, and verify the exact model’s operation with its product information.
Construction, force ratings, and pads
Construction varies by product. Harbor Freight lists a square cast aluminum bar with carbon-steel jaws; Woodpeckers describes extruded aluminum bar stock and an Acme-thread screw. Jorgensen calls its bar anodized and rust-resistant. Its product page characterizes the clamps as having an “excellent strength-to-weight ratio”; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independently verified comparison.

Jorgensen and Woodpeckers each publish a 1,000-pound figure for their respective products, and StewMac lists a 1,000-pound rating for its clamp. Those manufacturer claims do not show that different models were tested on a common basis. Do not infer that equal listed numbers guarantee equal real-world performance.
For compatible Jorgensen clamps, the product page lists #7452 pipe/bar clamp pads. Confirm fit with the specific clamp series; the listing does not establish universal compatibility with other brands or models.

Do not confuse woodworking clamps with tool-securing clamps
GWY also uses “Aluminum Bar Clamp” for an attachment that secures tools such as pry and alignment bars to equipment. Its listed aluminum versions have a 10-pound rating. That product is a different category from a sliding-jaw clamp used to hold woodworking parts during glue-up. The name alone is not enough to identify the intended tool.
