Make a simple solar oven from a shallow cardboard box, aluminum foil, black paper and clear plastic wrap. The foil-covered flap reflects sunlight into the box; the black surface absorbs it, and the clear cover helps retain heat. This is a warming and learning project, not a dependable replacement for a standard cooker.
Materials and preparation
Gather a clean, shallow pizza box or similar cardboard box with a lid, aluminum foil, black construction paper, clear plastic wrap, tape, scissors and a stick or pencil to prop up the flap. Keep the box on a stable surface that receives direct sunlight. An adult should handle any blade or box cutter used to cut the lid.
How to make the solar oven
- Mark the reflector flap. On the lid, draw a rectangle, leaving a border around the edges. Cut along three sides of the rectangle so the flap remains attached along the fourth side. Have an adult do the cutting.
- Cover the flap with foil. Smooth aluminum foil over the underside of the flap and tape it in place. NASA’s classroom design also lines the inside of the box with foil. The foil should be smooth enough to reflect sunlight into the opening.
- Make the dark absorber. Place black construction paper in the bottom of the box. This is the surface that absorbs sunlight and warms; the foil flap is a reflector, not the cooking surface.
- Cover the opening. Stretch clear plastic wrap across the opening and tape it down. For the NASA design, add a second layer on the other side of the lid, so the opening is covered on both sides.
- Aim the reflector. Close the lid and prop the foil-covered flap open with a stick or pencil so it reflects sunlight through the covered opening and into the box.
NASA Climate Kids describes the principle this way: “A solar oven is a box that traps some of the Sun’s energy to make the air inside the box hotter than the air outside the box.” See its solar oven activity for the classroom version. USDA AgLab’s build instructions explain the roles of foil, black paper and the clear cover.
Why the parts work
- Aluminum foil: reflects additional sunlight into the box when the flap is angled toward the Sun.
- Black paper: absorbs sunlight and warms the interior surface.
- Clear plastic wrap: lets sunlight enter while slowing heat from escaping through the opening.
- Cardboard enclosure: forms the box around the space where the air can warm.
NASA JPL Education presents solar ovens as an engineering challenge: build a design, test it and consider how to improve efficiency. Its lesson plan is useful for exploring how changing a reflector or enclosure affects the design.

What to expect
Expect a small demonstration oven for warming food and exploring solar cooking, not a controlled appliance with a guaranteed result. Solar Cookers International describes its quick demo cooker as suitable for warming foods and demonstrating solar-cooking concepts, adding: “It is not intended as a substitute for a standard solar cooker.” Its guide to making and using solar cookers draws that distinction.
The cited instructions do not establish a guaranteed temperature or cooking time for this particular cardboard-and-foil design. Sunlight, weather and how the oven is built all affect what it can do, so do not rely on a fixed schedule or assume food has reached a safe temperature. Treat this project as a warming activity unless you have appropriate food-safety guidance for the food you are preparing.
Quick Recap
Rank #3
- 【Latest Solar Oven】The solar cooker works in all seasons as long as the sun is up. It even functions on cloudy days or in snowy conditions, effectively capturing ultraviolet light and retaining heat.
- 【Fast & Delicious】It takes only 20 minutes to cook a meal, reaching a maximum temperature of 300°F(150°C) in full sunlight. Solar cooking also delivers better flavor—with minimal air movement inside the oven, food cooks evenly and stays moist and tender.
- 【Easy to Use】The solar stove can be set up and stored in seconds thanks to the zipper design on both sides. It requires no supervision, so even children can join in the fun. It saves you time and energy, letting you relax while enjoying your meal.
- 【Portable & Durable】Its exterior resembles a one-piece handbag with an adjustable strap. The durable vacuum tube cooking chamber provides excellent insulation, keeping heat in and cool air out.
- 【Wide Application】Use it anywhere there is sunlight—whether camping in a tent, in a motorhome, mountaineering, hunting, fishing, kayaking, or even on military maneuvers. Our solar oven is a reliable source of hot beverages and safely cooked food, anytime.

Safety when using the oven
- Have an adult make the cuts in the cardboard.
- Keep the cooker stable and supervise children while it is in use.
- Use oven mitts when handling a hot tray or food, and avoid touching hot surfaces. Science Buddies warns that a solar oven can reach temperatures high enough to cause serious burns.
- A food-safe thermometer is listed as optional in DIY.org’s solar oven activity. A thermometer can help check a temperature, but its presence alone does not establish that cooking is safe; follow food-safety guidance appropriate to the food.
