Yes—a purpose-built desktop or benchtop plastic injection molding machine can be used in a suitably equipped home shop. It heats plastic pellets and injects the molten material into a mold to make parts; it is not a 3D printer or a casual, hazard-free appliance. The right choice depends on the part and production volume you need, the machine’s capabilities, compatible resin and tooling, and whether your workspace can support the equipment safely.
What a home injection molding machine does
An injection molder heats plastic pellets until they can flow, then forces the material into a shaped mold. Once the plastic cools, the mold opens and the part is removed. The mold determines the part’s shape, so the machine alone cannot make a finished object.
This differs from 3D printing, which builds a part layer by layer, and from casting, which pours a material into a mold without the same injection process. Desktop and benchtop machines are smaller than factory-scale equipment, but they still use heat, pressure, and moving mechanisms.
What kinds of machines are available?
“Benchtop” describes a broad range, not a standard capacity. A compact manual press, a DIY kit, a pneumatic machine, and an automated desktop unit can differ substantially in shot capacity, pressure, clamping force, controls, and setup needs.

How to choose a machine for your project
Start with the part and the mold, not the machine’s footprint. A machine’s usable capacity depends on such factors as shot size, injection pressure, clamping force, mold dimensions, and the resin’s flow behavior. A compact machine is not automatically suitable for a particular part.
- Part and volume: Estimate the part’s size and how many you intend to make. Consider whether the time and cost of making or buying a mold are justified for that quantity.
- Machine capability: Compare shot capacity, injection pressure, clamp force, cycle controls, and compatible mold dimensions. Check the selected model’s specifications rather than relying on the word “benchtop.”
- Material compatibility: Confirm that the machine supports the exact resin grade and its melt-flow behavior. A material name alone does not establish compatibility.
- Tooling and ejection: Check how the mold will be made, mounted, and opened, and how the part will be ejected. The tooling must suit the part geometry and the machine.
- Workspace and utilities: Account for the machine’s weight and footprint, electrical supply or compressed air, guarding, ventilation, hot tooling, pellet storage, cleanup, and safe handling of hot parts.
- Ownership support: Check what is included, what must be purchased separately, and the availability of spare parts and manufacturer support. Verify current price, configuration, and delivery terms with the manufacturer.
Resin and mold compatibility
Check the resin grade, not just the polymer name
Manufacturers list different materials for their machines, but those lists are not universal guarantees. APSX says its V3 can process PP, PE, TPO, nylon, polycarbonate, acetal/Delrin, ABS, and PC/ABS, and specifies a melt-flow rate above 3 g/10 min under ASTM D1238. It recommends standard-size virgin pellets and says results depend on melt flow and mold design. MicroMolder lists tested general and engineering plastics including PE, PP, ABS, styrene, polycarbonate, POM, PET, and TPE. These are maker statements about their equipment, not proof that every grade will work in every machine.

- Maximum Injection Amount (theoretical): 0-10g/time
- Cost Saving:This injection molding machine uses a simple hand-disassembled mold to complete the injection molding, and the mold can be replaced to achieve multiple uses of one machine. Furthermore, compared to pneumatic injection molding machines, it uses lower pressure and allows for the use of 3D printed molds to create products, making it suitable for DIY projects.
- Heating Temperature: 0-350°C(0~662°F). The temperature is adjustable according to material. PEPP temperature 200-240°C, ABS 180-210°C, PS 180-200°C
- The plastic injection machine comes with a test mold and bench vise. It can be used by connecting the power supply. Don't need to connect the air compressor. It is easy to use and simple to operate without take much space.
- Application: Soft plastics such as PP, PE, ABS are the most suitable, and PS, PA, PET, TPU, and PVC can also be used. Only a small amount of sample is needed for easy extrusion. Capable of small batch production and test
Follow the current manual for the machine you choose and the resin supplier’s processing guidance. Do not assume that an available plastic pellet—or scrap plastic of an unknown grade—is suitable.
The mold is part of the machine setup
Metal tooling and 3D-printed molds are both shown in manufacturer examples, but neither is automatically appropriate for every project. Mold material and design must account for the machine’s temperature, pressure, and clamping capability, as well as part geometry, surface requirements, expected quantity, and ejection. APSX provides a design guide and describes the relationship among holding pressure, part footprint, and clamp force. An ordinary 3D-printed mold should not be assumed to withstand a particular process without checking the machine maker’s limits and the mold design.

What a home setup needs for safety
A home location does not make injection molding low-risk. The APSX-PIM manual warns that molten plastic can cause severe burns, pressurized material can eject through the nozzle, trapped gas can splatter during purging, and heating plastic releases gas. It also identifies electrical hazards and warns against reaching into moving parts during a cycle. These instructions are specific to the APSX-PIM; use the current safety guidance for the machine and material you select.
The APSX manual recommends keeping guards closed during careful purging, using local exhaust ventilation to carry fumes outside, and wearing eye or face protection, heat-resistant gloves, protective footwear, and protective clothing. The equipment and procedures required depend on the specific machine and process.

- Powerful 1000W Heating & Precise Temperature Control:Designed for high-temperature durability, this machine features a 1000W heating system with precise temperature settings ranging from 0℃ to 350℃.
- Versatile Compatibility with PE Plastics:This machine is specifically optimized for processing Polyethylene particles, including both HDPE and LDPE. It serves as an irreplaceable assistant in the workshop for creating custom plastic parts with excellent material consistency.
- DIY-Friendly with Large Mold Capacity:Focused on DIY enthusiasts and small business owners, this vertical injection molding machine is easy to install, operate, and maintain. It accommodates molds with a height of up to 550mm, offering great flexibility for producing a wide variety of plastic components.
- Plug-and-Play Convenience:Enjoy a hassle-free setup with a design that requires no air compressor. Its straightforward manual operation makes it an ideal choice for small batch processing, prototyping, and starting your own plastic parts business.
Before operating a machine at home, make sure the work area can accommodate its utilities, guarding, ventilation, hot tooling, resin handling, cleanup, and safe movement of finished hot parts. A desktop-sized machine is not safe by virtue of being small.
When home injection molding makes sense
A desktop or benchtop molder may suit a maker, educator, prototyper, or small shop that needs molded parts and can provide compatible tooling and a properly equipped workspace. It is a poor fit if the mold cost and setup are out of proportion to the quantity, the desired part exceeds the machine’s capacity, or the workspace cannot safely manage heat, pressure, fumes, and moving equipment.
