A homeowner in Neuville-sur-Saône, near Lyon, found five gold bars and many coins in plastic bags while his property was being excavated for a swimming pool in May 2025. He reported the discovery to authorities, who reportedly determined that the find was not archaeological and allowed him to keep it. News reports put its value at about €700,000, or roughly $800,000 at the time.
What did the homeowner find?
The buried items were five gold bars and “many coins,” stored in plastic bags. Reports do not give the coins’ exact number, types, weights or denominations, so the contents cannot be described more precisely from the available accounts. The discovery was made during pool excavation in May 2025 in Neuville-sur-Saône, a town near Lyon, France. CBS/AFP
What did he do after finding the gold?
He notified local authorities rather than keeping the discovery quiet. Police reportedly traced the bars using their unique numbers and found that they had been legally acquired and were not stolen. The bars had reportedly been melted at a nearby refinery around 15 to 20 years earlier, according to CBS/AFP. CBS/AFP
Was he allowed to keep it?
Yes. News reports said authorities allowed the homeowner to keep the gold after determining that it did not come from an archaeological site and had no archaeological significance. CBS/AFP reported the decision in connection with French Civil Code wording about a hidden or buried thing whose ownership cannot be proved, and about treasure found by chance on one’s own property. That reporting does not establish a rule for every buried object or for other countries: ownership can depend on the facts, applicable law and heritage protections. CBS/AFP

How much was the find worth?
The Independent reported an estimated value of about €700,000, attributed to local authorities; CBS/AFP rendered the estimate as roughly $800,000. These are figures reported in 2025, not a current valuation. Neither report provides an itemized appraisal or explains how the estimate was calculated. The Independent CBS/AFP
Who buried the gold, and why?
That remains unknown. The previous owner of the property had died, and authorities reportedly had no clues explaining how the gold was buried or why it was hidden. Reports do not establish that the previous owner placed it there or offer a confirmed motive. The Independent
