A Farmer’s Guide to Welding: Choosing a Process and Working Safely on the Farm

Choose a farm welding process by the repair, material and thickness, then account for portability and safe work conditions. Learn the distinctions among stick, MIG and TIG and the relevant OSHA precautions.

There is no single welder or welding process that suits every farm repair. Choose by identifying the part and its material, considering its thickness, deciding whether the work or the welder needs to move, and then matching the job to a process and equipment rated for it. Farm and ranch repairs can range from a gate hinge to a steel chopper blower, so treat those factors as a decision path—not as a shortcut to a universal machine recommendation. Miller Electric’s farm-selection guidance frames the choice this way; it is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparison test.

Start with the repair, not the welder

Before comparing machines, establish what is being repaired and what the job demands. Miller identifies repair type, metal thickness, portability and process as useful selection factors. A practical order is:

  1. Identify the part and material. Do not assume that every implement component is ordinary steel or that a process suitable for one material is suitable for another.
  2. Consider the material thickness and joint. The job must fall within the capability of the equipment and consumables, as specified by their manufacturers.
  3. Decide where the work can be done. Ask whether you can bring the part to a shop or need to take the welder to the equipment in the field.
  4. Compare processes and machine capability. Choose only after the job, access and material are understood; consult the equipment instructions and job-specific guidance.

Miller’s farm guidance raises the practical question of whether to bring the welder to the work or take the work to the welder. That choice affects portability and setup, but it does not determine the process on its own. The available farm-selection guidance does not support a single amperage or machine recommendation without details of the particular repair.

How to think about stick, MIG and TIG

Farm-specific guides discuss stick (shielded metal arc), MIG and TIG welding, but they do not establish a universal winner. Miller asks, “Which process (MIG, stick or TIG) fits your needs?” The useful answer depends on the repair, material, thickness, working location and suitable machine capability—not on a general ranking of processes. Successful Farming / Agriculture.com’s farmer’s guide, updated April 9, 2025, also discusses these processes and includes manufacturer-provided advice.

  • True Color Clear View: A 3.64" x 1.67" viewing area with 1/1/1/1 optical clarity delivers a true color view for improved visibility and reduced eye strain.
  • Fast Auto Darkening: 2 arc sensors switch in 1/30000 second, with adjustable sensitivity and delay controls for different lighting and arc conditions.
  • Wide Application Range: Shade 3/7-13 supports TIG, MIG, MMA/ARC and Grind, and the helmet accommodates magnifying lenses for close-up and detailed work.
  • Advanced Eye Protection: Features a blue light blocking outer lens to help reduce harmful high-energy blue light exposure during welding for improved eye comfort in extended sessions.
  • Comfort for Long Wear: Thickened PP shell with impact, flame and corrosion resistance, adjustable pivot style headgear provides a secure, balanced fit for all-day use.
  • Stick: A recognized option in farm-welding guidance and a common equipment category to consider, but not automatically the right choice for every repair or material.
  • MIG: Another process covered by the farm guides. Agriculture.com emphasizes surface preparation as important to avoiding porosity in MIG welding; treat that as source-attributed technique guidance, not a guarantee of weld quality.
  • TIG: Also included in the farm-specific process comparison. Confirm that the process and machine suit the actual material and job before proceeding.

For any process, follow the machine maker’s instructions and match electrodes, wire or other consumables to the equipment and material. A process name alone does not establish that a particular repair is appropriate or safe.

Prepare the work area for fire safety

Under OSHA’s U.S. general-industry hot-work rule, 29 CFR 1910.252, prepare the area before welding or cutting. The sequence is consequential: move the work or remove movable fire hazards where possible; if the object cannot be moved and hazards cannot be removed, use guards to confine heat, sparks and slag. If neither removal nor guarding is possible, the standard says welding or cutting shall not be performed. See OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252.

The same rule calls for a fire watch when specified conditions are present. One condition is appreciable combustible material within 35 feet (10.7 m); that distance is not the only trigger. Where a fire watch is required, suitable extinguishing equipment must be ready, the watcher must be trained, and the watch must continue for at least 30 minutes after welding or cutting ends. These are requirements of the cited general-industry provision, not a universal summary of every workplace’s rules.

Check the welding equipment before use

OSHA’s general-industry arc-welding standard, 29 CFR 1910.254, directs operators to check connections, securely attach the work lead, spread coiled cable, check grounding and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Equipment with a defect must not be used until its safety has been assured; damaged cable insulation or exposed conductors require cable replacement under this standard. Consult OSHA 29 CFR 1910.254 for the applicable provisions.

Farm welding also calls for appropriate personal protective equipment. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Bulletin #2320, Welding Safety on the Farm, covers PPE, arc-welding precautions, grounding and manufacturer recommendations. Its statement that “The employer must provide the proper personal protective equipment needed for welding jobs on the farm” is framed in the bulletin’s employer context; employers should consult the applicable requirements for their workplace.

Make farm equipment safe before servicing it

Welding is only one part of a repair if the equipment being worked on can start or move. OSHA 29 CFR 1928.57 addresses guarding and servicing of covered agricultural equipment. For covered servicing tasks, it calls for stopping the engine, disconnecting the power source and waiting for motion to stop before servicing, adjusting, cleaning or unclogging, subject to stated exceptions where a machine must run to be properly maintained. Keep guards in place during operation and replace them before returning equipment to service. Read OSHA 29 CFR 1928.57 for its scope and conditions.

Regulatory coverage matters: 29 CFR 1910.252 and 1910.254 are general-industry standards; 1928.57 concerns covered agricultural equipment servicing and guarding; and 29 CFR 1926.351 is a construction arc-welding standard. They should not be treated as interchangeable rules. OSHA also notes that state plans may impose requirements that differ from or are more stringent than federal standards.

Know when a general guide is not enough

General equipment-selection and safety guidance does not amount to an engineered repair plan. Do not infer from it that a repair is approved for a tractor rollover protection structure, load-bearing hitch, lifting point, pressure vessel or another component whose failure could cause serious injury. For those jobs, use the manufacturer’s instructions and qualified repair support rather than choosing a process from a general farm-welding overview.
