Cleaning is not the same as disinfection: if you need to disinfect, apply a product labeled for the specific greenhouse surface and intended use, and follow its directions for dilution, contact time, rinsing, drying, and safety.
How to clean a greenhouse
A thorough cleanup is easiest between crops, particularly after pest or disease problems. During production, remove weeds and suspicious or infected plant material promptly, and keep algae and irrigation maintenance under control. No single routine addresses every crop or pathogen.
- Prepare the space. Move plants and movable equipment out of the way where practical. Choose tools and washing methods suitable for the greenhouse structure and covering.
- Remove loose organic material. Sweep, scrape, or vacuum soil, growing media, plant debris, weeds, and dust from floors, benches, containers, and work areas. A shop vacuum can help on concrete or covered floors, but sweeping may be sufficient for a lighter cleanup.
- Wash from high surfaces down. Clear rafters, ledges, overhead piping, walls, and internal structures before washing benches and floors. A pressure washer can be useful for wash-downs when appropriate for the structure; detergent washing followed by rinsing is another approach. Washing removes residues but does not prove a surface has been disinfected.
- Clean equipment and irrigation components. Wash tools, containers, trays, benches, and work surfaces, removing visible soil and plant material. Irrigation lines and emitters can collect algae and biofilm; choose any treatment for the particular system and follow its directions.
- Disinfect when needed. After cleaning, use a product labeled for the surface and purpose. Follow its instructions for dilution, contact time, personal protective equipment, rinsing, and air-drying. Do not assume products are interchangeable or combine detergent and disinfectant without checking compatibility.
- Address the conditions that caused buildup. Manage watering and fertilizer runoff, improve drainage, and eliminate persistent puddles where possible.
UMass Amherst, UConn Extension, and the Government of Alberta describe pressure washing or high-pressure washing as greenhouse cleaning methods. A pressure washer is an optional washing tool, not a substitute for a labeled disinfection step. UMass Amherst’s greenhouse cleaning guidance, UConn Extension’s sanitation guidance, and Alberta’s end-of-season cleanup guidance describe these approaches.
Why cleaning must come before disinfection
Soil and plant residues can shelter microbes and reduce the effectiveness of some disinfectants. First remove debris and wash the surface; then, if disinfection is needed, use a product whose label covers the site and intended use. Labels differ by product and jurisdiction, so do not rely on a universal dilution or recipe. Check surface compatibility, target use, contact time, rinsing or drying directions, and required precautions.
#1 Best Overall
- The hand broom cleaning brush is made of dense and thick soft bristles. The bristles are not easy to fall off, not easy to deform, durable and soft in texture.
- The dust removal brush is very suitable for cleaning clothes, beds, counter, furniture, cars, couch broom, and can also be used as woodworking brushes, fireplace brushes and keyboards.
- The comfortable handle is made of natural solid wood, which is comfortable to hold, lightweight and durable than plastic handles.
- Easy to clean and prevent deformation of the brush. There is a small hole on the top of the wooden handle, which is convenient for hanging the brush anywhere to dry.
- The dust brush can clean gently, protect cloth and leather from scratches, and effectively clean dust and fine particles on various surfaces.
Disinfectants also vary in their compatibility with cleaners and surfaces. Alberta advises detergent washing and rinsing before applying a registered disinfectant, while UConn emphasizes removing organic matter before using a greenhouse-labeled product. Follow the specific product label rather than assuming a cleaner and disinfectant can be mixed or applied together.
Give floors, benches, containers, and tools extra attention
Floors
Remove growing media, plant debris, dust, and algae before washing. Floors can harbor pathogens associated with root rot and damping-off. If the floor stays wet or accumulates runoff, address drainage as part of the cleanup rather than relying on repeated washing alone.

Benches and work tables
Benches collect growing media and plant material. Algae and pathogens can persist on or within wood, while non-porous surfaces are generally easier to clean and disinfect than bare wood. UMass Amherst recommends wire benches where possible because they are easier to disinfect. Choose any disinfectant for the actual bench material and labeled use.
Containers and trays
Wash reusable pots and trays thoroughly to remove soil and plant debris before any disinfectant treatment. If a disease problem affected the crop, consider not reusing the containers. A disinfectant cannot replace the removal of visible material.

Tools
Remove soil and debris from tools before treating them. Follow the product label and avoid transferring excess disinfectant to plants if it could cause injury. The University of Florida IFAS guidance on disinfecting garden tools also stresses cleaning tools and following product directions.
Irrigation equipment
Algae and biofilm may build up in irrigation lines and emitters. Select a cleaning treatment appropriate for the specific system; a product suitable for a walkway or bench is not automatically suitable for irrigation equipment. Follow its system-specific instructions.

How to keep algae from returning quickly
Algae can grow on walkways, pipes, equipment, greenhouse coverings, benches, and containers. Besides making walkways slippery, it can clog irrigation or misting equipment and provide food for shore flies and fungus gnats. Remove buildup during routine cleanup, then reduce the conditions that support it:
- Avoid overwatering and fertilizer runoff.
- Improve drainage and address persistent puddles.
- Prevent surfaces and growing media from staying unnecessarily wet.
Choosing cleaning equipment and disinfectants
There is no single best disinfectant for every greenhouse. Compare products using the labeled site and target, compatibility with the surface and preceding cleaner, required contact time, rinsing or drying directions, and safety requirements. For washing equipment, consider greenhouse size and accessibility, floor type, debris load, and whether the tool can be used safely. A pressure washer or shop vacuum can make particular jobs easier, but neither is necessary for every grower.
