You can grow herbs, salad greens, microgreens and even some fruiting vegetables in a small home—but the right setup depends on available light, the crop’s mature size, drainage and how much care you can give it. These nine ideas are starting points, not guarantees: a bright windowsill may suit herbs, while tomatoes and peppers usually need more direct sun and warmth.

1. Start a sunny windowsill herb garden

Grow herbs you actually cook with in individual pots or a shared planter, using a lightweight potting mix and containers with drainage holes. University of Maryland Extension recommends a south- or west-facing window receiving at least five hours of sun for its indoor-herb guidance; light needs vary by herb, and winter days may call for supplemental lighting.

Place a saucer beneath each pot to protect the sill, and avoid letting containers sit in standing water. For the specific winter herb setup described by Maryland Extension, its guidance calls for 14–16 hours of supplemental light. That figure is an institution-specific recommendation, not a universal schedule for every plant or lamp. University of Maryland Extension: Growing Herbs in Containers and Indoors

2. Grow microgreens in a shallow tray

Microgreens offer a compact edible crop with a quick turnaround. A specialized kit is optional: a clean, food-safe reused container can serve as the tray. The basic supplies are seeds, a container, growing media, water, warmth and light.

3. Keep baby salad greens in a container

Lettuce, spinach and Asian greens can fit in a container on a balcony, counter or bright window area. Maryland Extension’s container guidance gives cool-season crops such as these 3–5 hours of direct sun. Indoors, a window may not provide enough light for sturdy growth, so consider supplemental lighting if plants are weak or leggy.

Choose a container that gives roots room and drains freely. Harvesting young leaves can help keep the crop compact, but does not eliminate the need to match the container and light to the plant. 4. Put several pots on a plant shelf with supplemental light

A shelf gathers small pots in one footprint and can make watering and care easier to organize. If the window does not meet the plants’ needs, add supplemental lighting. UNH Extension notes that some indoor plants—especially those requiring full sun—need additional light; Maryland and Virginia Tech Extension also discuss supplemental lighting for indoor growing.

Choose the light based on the crops and the shelf arrangement rather than assuming one fixture specification will suit every plant. Keep leaves from crowding one another, and make sure pots can drain without water damaging the shelf. 5. Use hanging baskets for suitable edibles

The Extension guidance establishes hanging baskets as an option, not a universal mounting method; the safety of a particular installation depends on the building and its support. 6. Add a window box where it fits

A window box can turn a narrow ledge or rail area into growing space. Maryland Extension includes window boxes among options for growing edibles. Before planting, check that the box is securely supported, receives enough light for the chosen crop and has a way to drain without causing water damage.

Use the box’s depth and length to guide crop choice, leaving room for mature plants rather than packing it according to the number of seedlings that fit on planting day. University of Maryland Extension: Growing Vegetables in Containers

7. Grow upward with a vertical planter or trellis

A trellis or vertical planter can use wall-adjacent space that would otherwise go unused. UNH Extension recommends vertical gardening as an option for container gardeners, and Virginia Tech describes planter boxes with trellises for small-space settings.

Match the support to the crop and the weight it must bear, and do not assume every wall, railing or mounting point is suitable. Ensure plants still receive light and that containers are accessible for watering and drainage. 8. Try a compact tomato or pepper in a container

Small-fruited tomato varieties and some small-fruited peppers may be grown indoors, according to Virginia Tech Extension. These fruiting crops need warm, bright conditions, and the guidance cautions that pests can be a problem. They are less forgiving of limited light than many leafy crops.

Maryland Extension’s container guidance recommends 6–8 hours of direct sun for warm-season crops such as tomatoes and peppers, compared with 3–5 hours for cool-season greens. Those are crop-specific Extension recommendations; a home’s winter window may not provide enough light, so supplemental lighting may be needed. Virginia Tech Extension: Vegetable Gardening in Containers; University of Maryland Extension: Growing Vegetables in Containers

9. Choose dwarf or bush vegetables for pots

Compact and bush varieties can make some vegetables more practical in containers. Maryland Extension recommends bush or dwarf crops for small-space gardening and advises beginners to start small. Check the variety’s mature size, then select a container large enough for the plant’s roots and growth; a compact label does not mean a crop will thrive in a dim corner or an undersized pot.

Container recommendations vary with crop and setup, so use the plant’s growing instructions alongside Extension guidance when choosing a pot. University of Maryland Extension: Container Food Gardening; Virginia Tech Extension: Vegetable Gardening in Containers; UNH Extension: Tips for Small Space Gardening – Pots and Other Containers

How to choose the right setup

  • For the least space and a quick edible crop: Try a microgreens tray.
  • For frequent cooking: Start with a few herbs on the brightest suitable windowsill.
  • For leafy harvests: Consider baby greens, checking light before planting.
  • For an underused footprint: Look at a shelf, hanging basket, window box or vertical planter, while accounting for drainage and support.
  • For tomatoes or peppers: Confirm you can provide their warmer conditions and stronger direct-light needs.

These recommendations come from U.S. university and cooperative Extension sources. Actual results depend on local conditions, window exposure, variety, container and care.
