Reusable poster putty and poster-specific strips work for lightweight prints on compatible surfaces; a magnetic hanger can keep adhesive off the paper, while suction-cup rails are suited to windows and other hard, nonporous surfaces. No adhesive method is guaranteed to come off every wall or poster without damage.
Seven ways to hang a poster without tape or tacks
These are different options, not a tested ranking. Check the specific product’s surface restrictions, weight limit and removal directions before mounting.
1. Reusable poster mounting putty
Knead small pieces until soft, place them near the poster’s corners and press the print onto a clean, dry surface. Loctite describes Fun-Tak as reusable and repositionable for temporary mounting of lightweight posters. Its instructions say to clean and dry the surface, roll and knead the putty until warm and soft, then press the object firmly into place: Loctite Fun-Tak instructions.
Loctite says four pre-cut Fun-Tak tabs hold up to 1 lb. That is the maker’s specification for those tabs, not a general rating for other putties or for any arrangement of loose putty.

2. Poster-specific removable strips
Choose strips explicitly sold for posters rather than assuming picture-hanging strips have the same intended use or capacity. tesa says Powerstrips Poster hold up to 200 g. Its product page excludes styrofoam, foamed materials, non-stick-coated surfaces and porous materials: tesa Powerstrips Poster.
3. Command Poster Strips
3M lists painted walls, finished wood, painted concrete or cinder block, laminate, glass, metal and tile as recommended surfaces for Command Poster Strips. It warns against wallpaper and delicate or weak surfaces. For removal, 3M says to pull the strip slowly straight down; follow the package instructions for the exact product: 3M Command Poster Strips.

4. Specialty removable poster tape
If you mean a removable specialty product rather than ordinary household tape, 3M’s Scotch poster tape instructions specify 101 mm (4 in) of tape for each 113 g (0.25 lb), with a maximum mounted weight of 113 g (0.25 lb). The same instructions warn that removing the tape may damage the poster or substrate and advise against wallpaper, delicate surfaces and flat paint. Treat it as a limited option, not a damage-free guarantee: 3M Scotch poster tape instructions.
5. Magnetic poster hanger
A magnetic hanger can keep adhesive away from the printed sheet: GAEKKO describes a holder that grips the poster magnetically while removable adhesive dots attach the wall-side parts. The wall still receives adhesive, and compatibility and removal statements come from the maker rather than independent testing: GAEKKO magnetic poster hanger.

6. Suction-cup snap rail for glass
For a window or another smooth, hard, nonporous surface where suction cups can seal, a snap rail can hold light to mid-weight signage without adhesive on the glass. Popco sells a kit with suction cups and hooks for that use: Popco suction-cup snap rail kit. It is not a reliable general solution for painted drywall.
7. Use four poster-strip attachment points near the corners
For a flat, lightweight poster on a compatible surface, four purpose-made poster-strip attachment points near the corners can help keep it flat. This is a placement approach, not a separate mounting technology: use the specific strip’s instructions and load limit. Adding more strips does not establish a higher safe load unless that product’s directions say so.

These figures are manufacturer specifications for different products and methods, not directly comparable test results. If the print is valuable or irreplaceable, avoid relying on adhesive mounting.

Prepare the surface and remove products carefully
- Check the exact product and surface. Compatibility varies. For example, tesa excludes porous materials, while 3M warns against wallpaper and delicate or weak surfaces for Command Poster Strips.
- Clean and dry the mounting area. Loctite directs users to clean and dry the surface before applying Fun-Tak. 3M’s Command Poster Strips page says to clean with rubbing alcohol and follow the included directions.
- Observe painting and placement guidance. A 3M Command guidance document advises waiting seven days after painting, avoiding wallpaper and locations above beds, and preparing the wall with isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Check the instructions for the exact regional product because directions can vary: 3M Command product-use guidance.
- Use the product-specific removal method. Command Poster Strips are removed by pulling slowly straight down, according to 3M. Scotch poster tape carries a warning that removal may damage the poster or substrate. A clean-removal claim from a maker is not a guarantee for every paint finish, wallpaper, poster stock or length of use.
Which method should you try?
- For a lightweight poster and a compatible wall: consider reusable putty or poster-specific strips, checking the product’s stated limit and exclusions.
- To keep adhesive off the print: consider a magnetic hanger, while remembering that its wall-side parts still use adhesive.
- For a window or other suitable hard, nonporous surface: consider a suction-cup snap rail.
- If the poster or wall must not be marked: adhesive products cannot guarantee that outcome. Choose a method that avoids adhesive on both surfaces, or display the poster without attaching it to the wall.
