Used coffee grounds can be useful in a garden, but they are not a dependable stand-alone fertilizer, soil acidifier, or pest repellent. Their best-supported role is as a moderate ingredient in a varied compost pile. They may also have a limited use beneath coarse mulch when a soil test indicates that adding organic matter is appropriate.

Why coffee grounds can fit into garden care

Grounds are a household byproduct that can contribute organic material and nutrients after they decompose in compost. Washington State University (WSU) Extension’s guide, Using Coffee Grounds in Gardens and Landscapes (published in 2016 and revised in December 2021), supports adding them to compost while cautioning against excessive amounts and unsupported claims about direct use.

1. Put a household byproduct to use in compost

Rather than discard used grounds, add them to a compost pile as one ingredient among many. This is the clearest practical use supported by extension guidance; it does not mean grounds alone make a complete compost or fertilizer.

2. Contribute organic material and nutrients after composting

Composted grounds can contribute organic material and nutrients when incorporated into soil. That is different from spreading fresh grounds as if they were a balanced, ready-to-use plant food. If your garden needs particular nutrients, a soil test is a better guide than assuming grounds supply what is missing.

3. Add a nitrogen-rich ingredient to a varied compost mix

Coffee grounds contain nitrogen-rich proteins, and their carbon-to-nitrogen ratio changes as they break down. WSU recommends combining grounds with varied compost feedstocks and keeping them to no more than 20 percent of the pile’s volume. Let hot grounds cool before adding them, and avoid overloading the pile: excessive grounds can harm plants.

How to apply grounds directly, if at all

4. Use composted grounds sparingly beneath coarse mulch

If a soil test indicates a need for added nutrients or organic matter, WSU describes a specific landscape application: no more than a one-half-inch layer of composted grounds, covered by four inches of coarse organic mulch. This is not a recommendation to spread grounds thickly on the surface. Fine grounds can compact and interfere with air and moisture movement.

5. Treat mulch-related moisture and temperature effects as possibilities, not guarantees

Organic mulch can help moderate soil temperature and conserve moisture, but those general properties do not establish a guaranteed result from coffee grounds in a particular garden. Grounds should remain a thin, composted component beneath coarser mulch, not a dense standalone layer.

What the evidence does—and does not—say

6. Decomposing grounds may support disease-suppressive microbes

WSU describes controlled research in which organisms associated with decomposing grounds suppressed some plant diseases. The extension guide says effectiveness in gardens and landscapes is unknown. This is an emerging research finding, not a basis for treating grounds as a disease-control product or applying them to a plant with symptoms.

7. They offer a modest recycling benefit, not a proven plant boost

Keeping grounds in a compost cycle is a practical way to reuse organic material. But the sources do not establish seven separate, proven benefits to plant growth. The dependable takeaway is narrower: grounds can play a supporting role in compost, while other suggested effects need qualification.

Will coffee grounds acidify soil or help acid-loving plants?

No—not reliably. The pH of grounds can vary as they decompose, and used grounds should not be treated as an acidifier for blueberries, rhododendrons, or azaleas. Penn State Extension’s article, updated September 24, 2026, warns that used grounds may raise pH around these plants: Coffee Grounds for Gardening. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension reports a pH range of 6.5–6.8 for used grounds, consistent with their being near neutral rather than a dependable way to lower soil pH: Coffee Grounds as Fertilizer. Test the soil and use an amendment intended for pH correction if a change is needed.

When should you keep grounds away from plants?

  • Seed-starting areas: Do not use grounds where plants are being grown from seed. WSU reports reduced germination and growth in experiments involving several crop and ornamental species; fresh grounds can be phytotoxic.
  • Thick surface applications: Avoid piling grounds on top of soil as mulch. Their fine texture can compact and hinder air and moisture movement.
  • Confined worm bins: WSU advises against adding grounds to vermicomposting systems in confined worm bins, where they can injure or kill earthworms.
  • As a pest remedy: Do not rely on grounds to repel slugs, cats, or other garden pests. WSU Extension author Linda Chalker-Scott writes, “There is no published evidence that coffee grounds will repel or kill any garden pests.”

A practical way to decide what to do with your grounds

  1. Check what the garden needs. Use a soil test to decide whether added nutrients or organic matter are appropriate; do not assume grounds will correct a nutrient or pH problem.
  2. Choose compost first. Add cooled grounds to a varied compost pile, keeping them at or below 20 percent of its volume.
  3. Keep them out of seed-starting mixes and confined worm bins. Use another material in those settings.
  4. If using them as landscape mulch, follow the narrow guidance. Use no more than one-half inch of composted grounds beneath four inches of coarse organic mulch, and only when the soil test supports adding them.

University of Missouri Extension’s January 5, 2026, guidance likewise emphasizes uncertainty and the potential harm of direct application: Coffee Grounds in the Garden: What Gardeners Need to Know. Soil, climate, and plant needs vary, so local soil-test recommendations should take precedence over blanket claims about coffee grounds.
