The best fertilizer for hibiscus depends on the plant and how you grow it: university guidance supports balanced water-soluble formulas such as 20-20-20 or 10-10-10, while another recommends 12-4-18. For tropical hibiscus in containers, time-release granules can be a convenient option. The seven choices below are use cases—not a trial-tested ranking. No comparative evidence establishes that one produces more flowers than another.
Which fertilizer is best for hibiscus?
Start with your hibiscus type, growing conditions and the fertilizer label. University of Minnesota Extension describes hibiscus as heavy feeders and recommends balanced fertilizer such as 20-20-20 or 10-10-10. Louisiana State University AgCenter gives 12-4-18 or a “high bloom” water-soluble fertilizer as a good ratio. These are different institutions’ recommendations, not proof of one universally superior formula. The numbers are guaranteed N-P-K analyses, not measurements of flowering results.
Use the following seven options as practical formulation and delivery-style choices. Several overlap because available guidance does not establish seven independently tested best products.
| Option | Best fit | What the source supports |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced water-soluble 20-20-20 | General feeding where UMN guidance applies | UMN names it as an example of balanced fertilizer and gives an outdoor summer schedule of half label strength every two to three weeks. |
| Balanced 10-10-10 | General feeding where UMN guidance applies | UMN names it as another balanced example; follow the product’s own label for dose and frequency. |
| Water-soluble 12-4-18 | Following LSU’s hibiscus guidance | LSU identifies this ratio as suitable; this does not establish that extra phosphorus or “bloom booster” products improve flowering. |
| fertilome Hibiscus & Tropical Plant Food, 17-7-10 | Growers wanting a named hibiscus product | The manufacturer label lists this analysis and container-specific application amounts. Use the current package label. |
| Nelson NutriStar Hibiscus & Flowering Tropicals | Growers seeking a slow-release granular product | Nelson describes slow-release nitrogen granules and monthly feeding. A distributor listing gives 10-4-12; verify the current guaranteed analysis on the package. |
| Controlled-release pellets, such as Osmocote | Tropical hibiscus where fewer feeding sessions are preferred | Maryland Extension says time-release pellets can suffice for tropical hibiscus. LSU says slow-release granules can be combined with water-soluble fertilizer. Analysis and schedule depend on the product. |
| Another slow- or controlled-release granular fertilizer | Choosing by label and local availability | A category, not a brand endorsement. Compare guaranteed analysis, release information and label directions; products vary. |
How to choose for hardy outdoor or tropical hibiscus
Hardy hibiscus outdoors
For a hardy hibiscus planted in the ground, begin with the guidance for the plant and conditions rather than assuming it needs the same schedule as a tropical plant in a pot. UMN’s balanced-formula recommendation is one source-specific starting point. The 2024 Ask Extension response addressed a new hardy hibiscus, but the available guidance does not establish a single fertilizer brand or formula as best for every hardy cultivar and garden.

Tropical hibiscus in containers
For tropical hibiscus, especially container-grown plants, label-directed water-soluble feeding or time-release pellets are supported options. Maryland Extension says time-release pellets can suffice for tropical hibiscus. LSU also describes combining slow-release granules with water-soluble fertilizer. If combining them, follow both labels and avoid exceeding either product’s directions.
How often should I fertilize hibiscus?
University of Minnesota Extension recommends using half the label strength every two to three weeks for hibiscus grown outdoors for summer. For plants kept indoors, UMN recommends half strength about monthly in spring and summer, then less often in winter. These schedules belong to UMN’s guidance; they are not a universal schedule for every fertilizer or growing setup. A named product’s label takes precedence for its own dose and frequency.

How to read a hibiscus fertilizer label
- Check the guaranteed analysis. The N-P-K numbers show nutrient percentages by weight. Compare them with the recommendations you are using, but do not treat the analysis as evidence of a bloom increase.
- Look for release information. UF/IFAS advises evaluating how much of the fertilizer’s nutrients are slow- or controlled-release and says to choose a fertilizer with higher amounts of slow-release nitrogen.
- Follow the stated dose and interval. Container size, formulation and release pattern affect directions. Do not transfer a schedule from a different product just because the analyses look similar.
- Check the package you can buy. Formulas and availability can change by product and region. In particular, confirm Nelson NutriStar’s current analysis on the package rather than relying only on a distributor listing.
Can organic fertilizer alone feed hibiscus?
University of Florida IFAS notes that an organic fertilizer may need a quicker-feeding supplement. Check the fertilizer’s label for nutrient analysis and release characteristics, and do not assume an organic product provides the same immediate nutrient availability as a water-soluble fertilizer.
