Thyme and sage are the two herbs the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) specifically recommends for hanging baskets. Oregano or marjoram, rosemary, chives and parsley can also be candidates, based on broader RHS container-growing advice—but they are not all suited to the same basket or growing conditions. Choose among them according to sunlight, drainage, space and how often you can water.
Six herbs to consider for a hanging basket
This is a practical shortlist, not an experimentally ranked top six. The RHS is a UK gardening organization, and its advice does not establish that every herb here will suit every climate or basket. In particular, only thyme and sage are specifically named in its hanging-basket guidance; the other choices draw on its general container advice.

Can you plant these herbs together?
Yes, but not all six in one small basket. Thyme, sage, oregano or marjoram and rosemary generally suit sunny, free-draining conditions. Parsley tolerates part shade and needs compost that does not dry completely. Chives can be considered for a mixed container, but the basket still needs enough space for each plant.
For a mixed Mediterranean herb container, the RHS gives an example of at least 20 cm depth and 15–20 cm spacing between plants. This is general container guidance, not a universal basket specification. Sage and rosemary each have a larger-container recommendation of at least 30 cm wide and deep, so they may be better planted separately or in a substantial basket.

Keep mint in its own container rather than grouping it with herbs that prefer drier compost: mint prefers richer, moister conditions. RHS Mediterranean herb container guidance.
Set up the basket for herbs
- Choose a basket with drainage. Use free-draining compost. For herbs in containers, the RHS recommends gritty, well-drained compost; its advice describes adding up to 25% coarse grit or perlite to a loam-based compost. RHS herb-growing guidance.
- Match the position to the plants. Most culinary herbs prefer full sun. Parsley can tolerate part shade. Where practical, shelter sun-loving Mediterranean herbs from strong winds. Sage also benefits from a warm, sheltered site. RHS sage-growing guide.
- Check dimensions before planting. Account for root space and mature spread, not just the size of the young plants. The RHS’s 20 cm depth and 15–20 cm spacing apply to its Mediterranean-container example; rosemary and sage each have a 30 cm width-and-depth recommendation for containers. Watering, feeding and harvesting
Check moisture often
Hanging baskets can dry faster than many other containers. Check the compost frequently, particularly during warm, sunny weather, and water when needed. The RHS notes that summer displays in hot, sunny weather may need watering daily. Aim to keep roots from becoming persistently soggy, especially for herbs that need free drainage. Feed according to the growing medium
For its Mediterranean herb container example, the RHS suggests starting general-purpose liquid feed after a couple of months, then feeding every two or three weeks. Treat that as guidance for that example, not a universal schedule for every herb or compost. RHS Mediterranean herb container guidance.
Harvest lightly and shape plants
Once plants are established, harvest lightly and regularly. Regularly picking young sage leaves encourages bushier growth; trim thyme lightly after flowering to help maintain a bushy shape. RHS sage-growing guide and RHS thyme-growing guide.

Plan for winter in your climate
Plants in containers have roots more exposed to cold and wet than plants in the ground. Protect sensitive pots according to local frost conditions, and avoid leaving container herbs freezing, saturated or excessively dry. The RHS notes that some pot-grown herbs die out in winter; its advice comes from a UK gardening context, so adapt protection and timing to your local climate. RHS herb-growing guidance.
