A wishing well’s simplest practical role is as a planter: it adds height and greenery without requiring the structure to hold water. You can also use one as a garden divider, a screen for an eyesore where access is not needed, or a frame for a properly contained water or rainwater feature. Choose one main purpose first, then place the well in relation to a bed, path, or seating area so it feels intentional rather than obstructive.
1. Make it a planted focal point
A planter is the most straightforward way to give a decorative wishing well a useful role. Use a removable planter or suitable liner rather than filling the entire structure with soil by default. That keeps the planting arrangement easier to change and avoids assuming that the well itself is built to contain soil or water.
Match plants to the site’s light, local climate, and the depth available in the insert. For a composed look, choose a main foliage or flower palette and add one trailing plant. The plants in Hooper’s garden are an example for that site, not a universal planting list.

Consider placing it at the edge of a small garden, between a patio or seating area and a planted bed, or at a path’s endpoint. Check the footprint and sightlines: it should be visible from the places you want to enjoy it without narrowing a route or blocking movement.

3. Screen an eyesore without blocking needed access
A well may disguise an unattractive pipe or similar feature, but only where covering it is permitted and does not interfere with inspection, repair, airflow, or maintenance. 4. Adapt it into a recirculating water feature
A water feature is possible only if the installation has a water-holding arrangement and a suitable pump. An open-bottom decorative wishing well is not a reservoir. Garden-Delights describes adding a reservoir and pump, but does not provide a complete installation or electrical-safety plan. Garden-Delights
Plan for a compatible reservoir or liner, pump, power arrangement, and overflow route before choosing this option. Follow the instructions for the specific components or consult a qualified installer for construction and electrical details; the available guidance does not establish pump sizing or a universal build specification.

5. Take inspiration from rainwater planters
A purpose-designed downspout planter can intercept stormwater, hold water for irrigation, and create a planted feature. A wishing well could frame or visually disguise a separate rainwater planter, but a standard decorative well does not automatically capture, filter, or store rainwater safely. Treat the planter and overflow route as a designed system, not as an assumed property of the ornament.

Decide whether you want a dry decorative structure or a water-holding feature, then check the practical demands of the site before committing to a conversion.
- Planting: assess sunlight, climate, and usable container depth.
- Placement: consider the available footprint and how the well relates to nearby paths, beds, and seating.
