A hollow stump or knothole can become a planted feature, a place for a flowerpot, or a small wildlife station—but the right use depends on whether the wood is standing or fallen, how sound it is, and whether it can safely hold soil or water. First check the site and the wood; then choose one of these five treatments.
Before choosing an idea, check the wood and its location
“Knothole” can mean a hollow or cavity in a trunk, a rotted stump, or a hole in a piece of fallen wood. These features are not interchangeable: a standing snag has different safety concerns from a stump on the ground, and a decaying cavity may not support a pot or hold water.
- For standing dead wood: consider whether it could fall onto a building, walkway, driveway, or other property. UF/IFAS advises considering risks to people and property, as well as possible invasive pests or contagious pathogens; consult a tree-care professional if safety is uncertain. - For a fallen trunk or stump: assess whether the wood is stable enough for the intended use. If a hazardous tree needs to come down, Virginia Cooperative Extension describes leaving it on the ground to decompose as a focal point, with flowers and ferns planted around it. - For planting or water: consider drainage, light, moisture, and how much the wood has decayed. A cavity that stays soggy or crumbles may be better left as habitat or used decoratively rather than filled or modified.
Dead wood can serve wildlife as well as people. UF/IFAS explains that “Logs provide shelter, humid microclimate, basking sites, navigational aids, and food resources.” If you prefer to preserve the wood’s natural habitat function, you do not need to turn it into a planter or add a feeder.
1. Plant directly in a hollow stump
If a stump has a substantial, stable hollow, use it as a small planting pocket. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describes planting in a rotted-out stump as one way to reuse it in the garden. The source does not prescribe plants for every cavity, so choose only after checking the site’s light, moisture, drainage, and local growing conditions. A cavity that cannot drain reliably may not suit plants that need drier soil.

If you want flexibility, UC ANR also suggests setting changeable pots inside a hollow stump. That lets you alter the planting without treating the cavity itself as a permanent garden bed. See UC ANR’s stump and garden ideas.
2. Set a flowerpot on a broad stump
A pot on a wide stump is a simple way to make retained dead wood read as a deliberate landscape feature. UF/IFAS specifically recommends considering a flowerpot on a large stump to designate it as part of the landscape. Choose a stable surface and a pot size that suits the stump rather than assuming every stump can support a heavy container.

This option is useful when the stump’s top is broad but its interior is too shallow, damp, or irregular for direct planting. The pot can also be changed as your garden changes, though the stump itself remains the focal point.
3. Make a shallow stump birdbath
UC ANR describes making a shallow indentation in a stump or trunk section, letting it dry, sealing it with concrete, and allowing the seal to cure before adding water. Treat this as a project idea, not a universal construction specification: wood condition, size, location, and the product used all affect whether the result is suitable.

- Choose a stable stump or trunk section in a location where a water feature is appropriate.
- Form a shallow basin, then allow the wood to dry.
- Apply a suitable concrete product as directed by its current manufacturer instructions.
- Let it cure as directed before adding water, and check that the finished feature remains stable.
Do not use a decaying or unstable piece simply because it has a convenient hollow. The source’s description does not establish a basin depth, product, or construction detail that suits every stump.
4. Turn the wood into a bird-feeding station
A broad trunk cross-section can serve as a seed platform for ground-feeding birds. UC ANR advises drilling drainage holes so rainwater does not pool on the surface. It also describes hanging a feeder from a stump or using fruit on a branch as other ways to make dead wood part of a feeding feature.

Pick the version that fits the wood: a flat, stable top suits a platform; a sound upright section may suit a hanging feeder. Keep the feeder and surrounding area clean, and avoid placing it where the structure or activity creates a hazard. A feeding station is an active garden feature, unlike simply leaving the wood in place for habitat.

Not every hollow needs to be filled or built upon. A stump can be treated as a small sculpture, a fairy-garden setting, a seat, or material for a path, provided the wood is appropriate and stable for that use. UC ANR lists these kinds of stump reuse alongside planting and bird features.

For a softer, more natural composition, leave a felled section on the ground and plant flowers and ferns around it. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes this approach for a tree that posed a threat in its former position. A small sign or a flowerpot can also signal that retained dead wood is intentional, as UF/IFAS suggests.
Where habitat matters more than a polished feature, keep the wood relatively undisturbed. Hollow logs and dead wood provide cover and shelter for wildlife, according to University of Delaware Cooperative Extension’s wildlife habitat guidance and UF/IFAS. You can frame the area with regionally suitable plants; Delaware Cooperative Extension notes that native plants support local insects better than plants that evolved elsewhere. Choose species for your location and conditions rather than treating one planting list as universal.
Match the treatment to the feature

The most natural-looking choice is often the one that asks the least of the wood. A sound stump may support a pot or a modest bird feature; a fragile hollow may be better left as a habitat detail and framed with planting nearby.
