A closed, hard-sided compost bin is the best starting point, but a lid alone may not stop animals that can dig underneath or find food nearby. Secure the bin, cover scraps, maintain the pile, and remove other easy food sources. If you live in bear country, follow local wildlife guidance rather than relying on ordinary rodent or raccoon fixes.
1. Choose a closed bin with a secure lid and door
Use a hard-sided bin with a lid that stays shut, and secure any access door after adding material. USDA APHIS Wildlife Services includes a closed compost bin among its recommendations for discouraging wildlife, while UVM Extension recommends a hard-sided bin with a lid. These measures reduce access from above and through openings, but they do not address animals digging or tunneling beneath the bin.
In bear country, Vermont Agency of Agriculture guidance recommends a durable container with a lid that is difficult for a bear to open, or electric fencing. Check local wildlife advice for your area; the available guidance does not establish that any particular commercial bin or tumbler is bear-proof.
2. Protect the base from digging and tunneling
Rodents may enter from below, so consider a barrier under the bin as well as a secure lid. UVM Extension specifies a sheet of 1/4-inch hardware cloth laid on the ground, a few inches wider than the bin base so the edges extend beyond it. An Oregon State Extension response gives a different specification—1/2-inch welded hardware cloth—as part of rat-exclusion advice. These are recommendations from different sources and contexts, not a single universal mesh rule. Match the barrier and installation to the animal you are trying to exclude and your bin.

3. Bury fresh scraps and cover them with browns
Put new food scraps into the pile rather than leaving them exposed on top, then cover them completely with dry “brown” material such as leaves, straw, wood chips, or shredded cardboard. This reduces the food odors and visible scraps that can attract animals. The Kauaʻi County Earth Machine manual also advises burying fresh additions and fastening the door.
For areas with bear problems, UVM Extension reports that Vermont Fish and Wildlife recommends using three times as much brown material as green material. This is a locally attributed bear-country recommendation, not a universal composting ratio.

- Optimized Airflow: The garden compost tumbler features strategically placed vents that promote proper air circulation and prevent potential issues. Internal grooves effectively break up clumps, ensuring uniform mixing of materials and accelerating the decomposition of organic matter.
4. Maintain the pile and secure it after each addition
Turn the pile regularly and keep it damp rather than wet. UVM Extension suggests turning every other week and covering the pile with additional browns afterward. Oregon State Extension notes that a tumbler helps mix material, while a fixed bin needs regular stirring to help build and retain heat. Whatever the bin type, close and secure the access point after adding scraps.
Oregon State Extension’s April 7, 2026 response by wildlife ecologist Dr. Dana Sanchez emphasizes that exclusion works best alongside careful construction and movement of the mix. A barrier can help, but it is not a substitute for managing what is in and around the bin.

5. Remove other food rewards and tailor the fix
Animals may keep visiting if another easy meal is available nearby. Secure garbage, keep pet food and bird food inaccessible, clean food scraps and grease from grills, and check for spilled birdseed or feed. Michigan DNR recommends these kinds of steps for reducing raccoon access and cautions that retail deterrents such as lights and chemical repellents may work only briefly. Treat scare devices as supplements, not dependable stand-alone solutions.
What you put in the compost can matter too. In its advice about rats, Oregon State Extension recommends hot composting and avoiding meat, dairy, bread, and oil. UVM Extension also advises against dog or cat waste, meat or fish, dairy, and oil; it cautions against unrinsed eggshells. Follow your local composting guidance, especially if you are managing a particular pest.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
- ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
- ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
- ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
- ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.
