5 Reasons to Consider Diatomaceous Earth in Your Lawn and Garden

Diatomaceous earth has a contact action against some insects, but outdoor use is limited. Learn what labels permit, why moisture matters, and which grades to avoid.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) can kill some insects that contact dry dust, and certain registered products have specific outdoor uses. But it is not a dependable all-purpose lawn or garden treatment: outdoor performance is limited, moisture undermines it, and the product label—not the phrase “food grade”—determines where a pesticide may be used. Here are five narrow reasons to consider it, along with the limits that matter before you apply any.

What diatomaceous earth does—and why outdoor use is limited

DE is made from fossilized silica shells of diatoms. Its particles abrade and absorb protective oils and waxes on an insect’s outer body, contributing to dehydration. That is a contact mechanism: the insect must encounter the dust. DE is not a systemic treatment absorbed by plants, and this mechanism does not guarantee control of every insect.

Outdoor conditions make that contact approach difficult. The University of Florida IFAS reports that DE was impractical for outdoor insects in its evaluation, that molluscs generally are not killed or repelled from feeding, and that the material must remain completely dry to be effective. Do not assume it will reliably control slugs, snails, or a broad range of lawn and garden pests. Rain, irrigation, or other moisture can compromise the dry dust; the cited EPA product label also requires contact with dry dust.

Five limited reasons to consider DE

1. It has a physical mode of action against insects that contact it

For a susceptible insect that contacts dry DE, abrasion and absorption of protective body oils and waxes can contribute to dehydration. This is a reason it may be relevant to a specific insect problem—not evidence that it will protect plants or control pests it does not contact.

#1 Best Overall
Garden Safe Crawling Insect Killer with Diatomaceous Earth, 4 Lb
  • FOR ORGANIC GARDENING: Diatomaceous earth-based formula is good for organic gardening
  • FOR USE OUTDOORS: Apply a thin layer of the fine/powdery granules to plants and on the soil around plants
  • KILLS BY CONTACT: Kills listed insects by contact. Dust insects directly, if possible
  • CONTAINS DIATOMACEOUS EARTH: When dusted on insects, the fine/powdery granules coat their exoskeletons and absorb oils and fats, causing them to dry out and die. The granules also cut into insects’ shells, causing them to dehydrate further
  • CONTROLS CRAWLING INSECTS: Kills German cockroaches, ants,* beetles,** fleas, mealybugs and other crawling insects as listed

2. Some registered products list particular outdoor crawling insects

The EPA’s accepted label for Concern Diatomaceous Earth Crawling Insect Killer (EPA Reg. No. 50932-12) lists outdoor uses for crawling insects, including ants, spiders, earwigs, and mites, and gives examples such as foundations and ant trails. Those are product-specific permissions, not a blanket approval for garden beds, lawns, or edible crops. The accepted label is dated August 4, 2023; check the current label for the exact product you have before using it. See the EPA registration and label record.

3. It may fit a targeted, localized treatment

Where a product’s label permits the site and pest, its directions may support applying dust to a localized area where pests are found rather than broadcasting it across a lawn or food garden. The cited EPA label describes light dusting and requires direct contact with dry dust. Follow the directions for your specific product; do not extend an example site to a different one.

4. It can be considered as one part of integrated pest management

Integrated pest management (IPM) combines methods to manage pest damage while minimizing hazards to people, property, and the environment. Identify the pest first, then consider whether a nonchemical measure or another locally recommended tactic is more suitable. EPA recommends consulting local Cooperative Extension because pests, climate, lawn varieties, and growing conditions differ by location. EPA’s lawn and garden guidance explains its IPM approach.

5. A pesticide label gives specific use and safety directions

A registered pesticide label identifies the pests and sites covered and provides application and precaution instructions. The cited EPA product label states: “IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW TO USE THIS PRODUCT IN A MANNER INCONSISTENT WITH ITS LABELING.” The label—not a general claim about DE—determines the permitted use. The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) likewise advises selecting a product labeled for pest control and following its directions. NPIC’s food-grade DE guidance explains why food-grade material is not automatically evaluated for pest-control risks or effectiveness.

Check the product, pest, site, and conditions before applying

  • Product and site: Confirm that the exact product label lists both the pest and the place you intend to treat. An outdoor site on one product’s EPA record does not authorize use of another product in a garden or on crops.
  • Target: DE’s described action is against insects that contact dry dust. UF/IFAS reports poor practical results outdoors in its evaluation and says molluscs generally are not killed or repelled from feeding.
  • Moisture: DE must remain completely dry to work according to UF/IFAS. Consider whether rain, irrigation, or other moisture will reach the treatment area; do not assume dust remains effective after wetting.
  • Exposure: Avoid breathing dust. The cited EPA label calls for adequate ventilation and a suitable NIOSH/MSHA-approved dust mask for prolonged exposure. NPIC lists a dust mask and eye protection among exposure-reduction steps. Follow the label’s specific protective-equipment directions.
  • Local fit: Ask your local Cooperative Extension whether IPM guidance points to a more suitable option for the pest and growing conditions in your area.

Food-grade and pool-filter-grade DE are not substitutes for a labeled pesticide

“Food grade” does not mean a product has been evaluated for pest-control effectiveness or risks; NPIC says food-grade DE is not automatically assessed for those purposes. Pool-filter-grade DE is a separate concern: UF/IFAS warns that it contains crystalline silica that is very dangerous to inhale and should only be used as a pool filter. Do not substitute either grade for a pesticide product whose label permits the intended pest and site. UF/IFAS guidance on natural products for landscape and garden pests covers the outdoor limitations and grade distinction.
