Several low-growing plants can handle occasional walking, but none should be treated as a universal substitute for a durable walkway or lawn. Creeping thyme has the clearest support for light-to-moderate foot traffic; the other options below have regional or use-specific qualifications. For a route people use regularly, install stepping stones or a path and let plants fill the spaces around it.
How to choose a walkable ground cover
Match the plant to the site and the way people will use it. A surface that tolerates a few steps to reach a garden bed may not tolerate repeated trips across the same line. No shared trial or quantified traffic ranking is available for these five plants, so the choices are not presented as a universal best-to-worst list.
- Traffic: Reserve concentrated or frequent walking for a path, pavers, or stepping stones. Most ground covers tolerate less heavy traffic than turf.
- Light and moisture: Check the plant’s preferred sun exposure, soil drainage, and irrigation needs against the actual location.
- Climate and availability: Confirm local hardiness and regional extension advice. Several options below come from California guidance and may not suit every region.
- Establishment and upkeep: Ground covers need time and care to fill in; weed control, watering, and management of spreading growth may be needed.
Five ground covers that can take some foot traffic
1. Creeping thyme (Thymus spp.)
Creeping thyme is the strongest-supported choice here for a sunny, well-drained area that receives some walking. Wisconsin Extension lists it for full sun to part sun, dry, well-drained soil, and light foot traffic. NC State Extension describes Thymus praecox as a dense mat that tolerates moderate foot traffic and can grow between pavers. Poor drainage can lead to root rot, so avoid planting it in persistently wet soil. Check the needs of the particular species or cultivar and its fit for your climate; despite its name, creeping thyme is rarely used as a culinary herb. (Wisconsin Extension; NC State Extension)
2. Dutch white clover (Trifolium repens)
Wisconsin Extension describes Dutch white clover as a mat-forming, pollinator-friendly ground cover that takes foot traffic, with a light range from sun to part shade. It may suit a yard where flowers and pollinator activity are welcome. Before choosing it, consider whether that kind of surface fits your household’s maintenance preferences and confirm its regional suitability. (Wisconsin Extension)

3. Dymondia, or silver carpet (Dymondia margaretae)
UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County lists Dymondia as an evergreen, slow-spreading ground cover for sun to light shade in its category of walkable, low-growing surfaces. Its slow spread means it may take time to cover an area. The guide does not rate how often it can be walked on, so treat it as a regional candidate for some traffic rather than a proven heavy-use surface. (UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County)
4. Woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca)
The same Santa Clara County guide lists woodland strawberry as an evergreen, low-growing herb for full shade through full sun under its walkable-ground-cover category. That broad light range makes it an option where exposure varies, but the guide does not specify a traffic-frequency rating. Use a path or stepping stones if people will repeatedly cross the area. 5. Kurapia (Lippia nodiflora)
UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County includes Kurapia among its walkable, low-growing surfaces and describes it as an evergreen, mowable creeper for full sun to part shade. This is California-specific guidance. Before considering it elsewhere, verify that the plant identity or cultivar is appropriate, that it fits the local climate, that it is legal to grow in your area, and that it is available locally; those details are not established by the county guide. Build the route before planting
Decide where people will walk, then put durable walking surfaces there rather than asking plants to carry all the traffic. Colorado State University Extension advises: “Build walkways through areas intended for foot traffic before planting a ground cover.” That makes plant selection more practical: ground cover can soften the edges or fill gaps, while a path handles the repeated steps. The same principle appears in UC Master Gardeners of Placer County’s regional lawn-alternative guidance, which recommends stepping stones where moss is used in deep shade and pavers for plants less tolerant of traffic. Before planting, control existing weeds, consider a soil test, and choose for the conditions at the site. Colorado State University Extension notes that no single species works for every landscape. Plan for establishment care and continued upkeep: Wisconsin Extension identifies irrigation, fertilization, mulching, and weed control as establishment needs, and notes that some ground covers spread aggressively enough to require trimming or edging. Irish and Scotch moss can work for light traffic around stepping stones or between flagstones, but they are less suitable for frequent walking. Wisconsin Extension says they need regular water and excellent drainage, may brown if they receive too much or too little water, and can take several years to fill an area. It describes creeping thyme as the tougher alternative where walking is more frequent. In deep shade, Placer County’s guidance likewise calls for stepping stones because moss does not stand up to foot traffic. (Wisconsin Extension; UC Master Gardeners of Placer County)
