5 Tips for Caring for Rose Bushes in Fall

Fall rose care means easing plants into dormancy, cleaning up diseased material, watering while soil is dry and unfrozen, and tailoring pruning and protection to rose type and local winter conditions.

Fall rose care is about helping plants enter dormancy, not forcing new growth or shaping every bush. As weather cools, adjust care to your rose’s type and local winter conditions: keep roots watered while the soil is dry and unfrozen, remove diseased material, prune only where needed, and protect tender roses at the right time.

1. Let roses slow down for winter

As fall advances, stop routine deadheading and allow flowers to form hips. This helps signal the end of the growing season rather than encouraging fresh growth that may be vulnerable to cold. Iowa State University Extension recommends stopping deadheading as fall approaches: Rose Care by Season.

Fertilizer cutoffs are regional, not universal. Illinois Extension advises stopping after August 15, while the University of Minnesota Extension’s Minnesota-specific 2026 guidance sets an August 1 cutoff for hybrid teas, floribundas, and English roses. Follow local extension advice for your climate and rose class; do not apply late-season fertilizer by default. 2. Water during dry spells while the ground is unfrozen

Continue watering when fall weather is dry, especially for roses planted recently. Water needs depend on rainfall, soil, and the plant’s establishment; the practical stopping point is when the ground freezes. Iowa State University Extension gives this seasonal guidance in its Rose Care by Season.

Do not apply a winter watering schedule from one region everywhere. Oregon State University’s recommendation to water every four to six weeks during winter applies to high-desert Central Oregon when there is no snow cover and the ground is not frozen. It is not a general schedule for other climates. See Roses: Planting and Care in Central Oregon.

3. Clean up after frost to reduce disease carryover

After the first killing frost, remove fallen leaves and flower debris, especially if the plant had black spot, rust, or powdery mildew. Also remove dead or diseased canes. Fungal spores can overwinter in infected plant material, so cleanup reduces what remains around the bush; it cannot guarantee a disease-free rose next year. Iowa State University Extension covers post-frost cleanup in Rose Care by Season.

4. Prune lightly; save shaping for spring

Heavy fall pruning can expose roses to winter injury. Limit cuts to dead, diseased, damaged, or crossing growth, and shorten tall canes only when needed to reduce wind damage or make a specific winter covering workable. The University of Minnesota Extension sums up its Minnesota guidance this way: “Fall pruning is about safety, not shaping.”

Advice varies by region and rose type. Minnesota allows limited cutting back of tall hybrid teas after hard frosts to reduce wind rock; Iowa State generally discourages routine fall pruning and reserves most pruning for spring. Climbers and shrub roses that flower on older canes need particular care: avoid cutting healthy old canes simply to tidy the plant. 5. Match winter protection to the rose and the climate

First identify your rose class and its hardiness, then consider the severity and timing of winter freezes where you live. Hardy shrub, landscape, species, and many old garden roses may need little protection; tender hybrid teas and floribundas often need more. Roses that bloom on older canes also call for a lighter hand with pruning and covering. Extension recommendations differ by region, so use local frost and ground-freezing cues rather than a single national calendar.

For tender roses, regional guidance describes options such as mounding loose, well-drained soil or compost over the crown, using a collar filled with coarse mulch, tying exposed canes, or mulching around the base. The aim is insulation that keeps the crown and lower canes uniformly cold while avoiding waterlogged material. Do not dig soil from around the rose to build a mound; bring in suitable material instead.

Timing and dimensions are location-specific. Minnesota’s 2026 guidance for hybrid teas calls for protecting the crown with 8–12 inches of soil or compost after the ground freezes. New Hampshire Extension describes mounds 10–12 inches high for tender roses and emphasizes reducing freeze-thaw cycles. Illinois Extension advises waiting until after a hard killing frost before winter covering. These are examples of regional practices, not interchangeable requirements. Consult Minnesota Extension, New Hampshire Extension: Winter Protection of Roses, and Illinois Extension for advice suited to your area.
