Hyacinths, daffodils, tulips, peonies and wild blue phlox can bring soft spring color to a garden, from cream and blush to pale blue and lavender. They flower at different points in the season and suit different light conditions, so combining them can extend the display while helping you match each plant to its site. Bloom timing varies with location, spring temperatures and cultivar.
Five spring flowers for a soft-color garden
The flowers below offer a mix of warm pastel shades and cooler blues and lavenders. Bloom periods are general guidance, not fixed dates for every region; check local extension advice and cultivar information before choosing plants.
| Flower | Bloom timing | Soft-color options | Light and planting type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyacinth (Hyacinthus) | Early spring, according to University of Connecticut Extension | White, pink, pale yellow and purple | Listed for full sun; bulb |
| Daffodil (Narcissus) | Late March to mid-June in the University of Connecticut Extension listing | White, cream, yellow, salmon and pink | Listed for full sun; bulb |
| Tulip (Tulipa) | Late winter or spring, depending on cultivar and climate | Choose a pale cultivar suited to your region | Bulb; check local recommendations for site and performance |
| Peony (Paeonia) | Mid to late spring in the University of Connecticut Extension listing | Choose a pale cultivar suited to your garden | Full sun; perennial |
| Wild blue phlox (Phlox divaricata) | April to June in the University of Connecticut Extension listing | Pale blue, lavender and violet | Part shade; perennial |
Hyacinth for early fragrance
Hyacinths open in early spring and are noted for fragrant flowers. Connecticut Extension lists white, pink, red, pale yellow and purple; choose a white, pink or pale-yellow variety for a softer palette. Hyacinths grow from bulbs, as do daffodils and tulips. Illinois Extension’s bulb-planting guidance covers planting spring-flowering bulbs.
Daffodil for a long, varied display
Daffodils are not limited to bright yellow. Connecticut Extension lists white, yellow, salmon, orange and pink flowers, while Iowa State Extension notes cream and intermediate shades as well. The University of Connecticut’s late-March-to-mid-June listing is a broad window, not a promise that one plant will bloom throughout it.

Tulip for a tailored color accent
Tulips are spring bloomers, but their flowering time and suitability depend on the cultivar and climate. Select bulbs for your region and the color you want; do not assume every tulip will flower on the same date or return reliably in every garden.
Peony for mid- to late-spring color
Peonies add a later spring layer after early bulbs. Connecticut Extension lists them at 24–48 inches tall and in full sun. It notes that planting a range of peony species can extend bloom time up to eight weeks; that is guidance, not a guaranteed duration for every site.

Wild blue phlox for part shade
Wild blue phlox brings pale blue through lavender and violet flowers to a part-shade area. Connecticut Extension lists an April-to-June bloom period. It is different from garden phlox (Phlox paniculata), which Illinois Extension lists as a summer bloomer.
How to choose and combine them
For a sequence of color, pair early hyacinths with the broader spring windows of daffodils and wild blue phlox, then add mid- to late-spring peonies. A pale yellow or cream bulb can balance blush or salmon flowers, while phlox supplies a cooler blue or lavender accent. The exact overlap depends on local conditions and the varieties planted.

Iowa State University Extension’s cut-flower guidance says most species grown for cut flowers prefer full sun and well-drained soil, with exceptions. Use cultivar-specific and regional recommendations rather than applying that general guidance to every flower in this list.

Spring does not arrive on the same schedule everywhere. Kentucky Extension describes bloom dates as estimates, and Clemson Extension explains that spring bulbs can flower from late winter to early summer depending on species, with performance affected by its hot climate. Those regional differences make a local planting reference more useful than a single calendar date.
