For the strip beside a foundation, gravel or crushed stone, decorative rock, concrete, and pavers are practical choices—provided the ground beneath them slopes away from the house and local fire and pest guidance allows them. None fixes poor drainage on its own. For planting beds, organic mulch can be useful farther from the wall, where it can support soil and plants without creating avoidable moisture, fire, or pest concerns.

What matters more than the surface material

Water needs a route away from the house. The finished ground should slope away from the foundation, and that positive slope must exist beneath the landscaping finish. The University of Illinois Building Research Council cautions that gravel or ground cover can retain water; putting gravel over ground that slopes toward the house will not correct the problem. University of Illinois Building Research Council guidance

Roof runoff and other discharge need attention, too. Direct downspouts and air-conditioning drainage away from the house, as UF/IFAS Extension advises. UF/IFAS guidance on landscaping to prevent pests If water repeatedly pools beside the house, reaches the basement, or suggests a failed drainage system, changing the surface material is not a repair; investigate the grading and drainage separately.

Four materials for the immediate foundation area

UC Agriculture and Natural Resources identifies rock, gravel, concrete, and pavers as noncombustible options for areas less than five feet from structures. That is useful guidance where wildfire exposure is a concern, but local fire rules, pest conditions, and site design still matter. UC ANR guidance on applying mulch

1. Gravel or crushed stone

Gravel and crushed stone create an inorganic surface that does not decompose into soil organic matter. They can suit a narrow, low-planting strip close to the wall, but the ground below still needs to slope away. Choose a size and finish that work for the space and maintenance you expect; do not treat loose stone as a drainage fix. 2. Decorative rock

Decorative rock offers a similar inorganic surface with more choice in stone size and appearance. In sunny locations, however, rock can radiate heat and increase water loss for nearby plants, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It may be a better fit for a mostly unplanted strip than for a bed of heat-sensitive plants. EPA landscaping tips

3. Concrete

Concrete is a hardscape option identified by UC ANR as noncombustible close to structures. Its value depends on the finished grade and where runoff goes: a concrete strip that directs water toward the house can still create a drainage problem. 4. Pavers

Pavers are another noncombustible close-in choice. Their joints do not guarantee safe drainage; the base and finished surface still need to direct water away from the foundation. Plan the grade before choosing the paver layout. UC ANR guidance on applying mulch University of Illinois Building Research Council guidance

When mulch and planting belong farther from the wall

Organic mulch can conserve soil moisture and help control weeds, while adding organic matter as it breaks down. Those benefits make it useful in planting beds, but do not make it the default choice right against every foundation. UC ANR advises keeping organic mulch, except compost, five feet or more from homes and structural foundations, and suggests an inorganic mulch band near the foundation. Follow local fire and pest guidance, which may differ by site. UC ANR guidance on applying mulch EPA landscaping tips

Termites are another reason to consider placement and installation. UF/IFAS warns that mulch can bridge a termite treatment zone and advises against digging close to the foundation when doing so could break a treatment barrier. The same guidance recommends no more than two inches of mulch within 12 inches of the foundation. That depth advice addresses a specific pest and placement concern; it is not interchangeable with UC ANR’s five-foot clearance guidance. Avoid disturbing treated soil, and check local pest-control advice before installing a bed or edging near the house. UF/IFAS guidance on landscaping to prevent pests

Climate and plant choice matter as well. Nebraska Extension reported that studies comparing mulched soil with bare soil found summer soil temperatures were reduced by 8 to 13 degrees Fahrenheit. That figure describes soil-temperature comparisons, not a foundation-specific result or a guaranteed performance for any particular mulch product. How to choose for your site

  • For a close-in, low-planting strip: Consider gravel, decorative rock, concrete, or pavers, while confirming the underlying grade and local fire and pest recommendations.
  • For a planted bed: Consider organic mulch where it can be set back appropriately and maintained without bridging termite protection or directing water toward the house.
  • For sunny beds: Account for the heat rock can add around plants; select a surface and planting plan suited to the site’s exposure.
  • For any surface: Route downspout and air-conditioning discharge away from the foundation, and do not dig near the wall without considering buried services and termite treatment barriers.

There is no universal cost winner established for these materials. Compare local installed costs along with upkeep, appearance, plant needs, climate, and whether the installation can maintain positive drainage.
