If one flat blade on your UPS’s grounded three-prong plug is turned sideways, the plug may be a different rating from the receptacle—possibly a 20-amp plug that will not fit a 15-amp outlet. That is a clue, not a confirmed identification: check the UPS label, manual, and plug markings. Don’t force the plug or use an adapter to bypass the mismatch; have a qualified electrician assess the circuit and the right solution.
What does the sideways blade mean?
A grounded plug with one blade perpendicular to the other can indicate a different plug configuration and current rating from a standard outlet. In a 2006 discussion about a UPS with this appearance, a participant identified it as a 20-amp plug and said it would not fit a 15-amp outlet. That anecdote may fit what you’re seeing, but the thread gives no UPS model, readable nameplate, or standards-based identification. The appearance alone does not prove the plug type. Read the forum discussion.
Check the UPS nameplate and manual for its input voltage and current requirements, and look for markings on the plug. National Electrical Manufacturers Association material lists both 15-amp and 20-amp branch-circuit ratings; that distinction does not establish the rating of your receptacle, circuit, or UPS. NEMA’s comparison of electrical wiring-device standards.
What should you do if the plug won’t fit?
- Stop before modifying or forcing it. Don’t bend or file a blade, remove the grounding pin, or use a three-to-two-prong adapter. A grounded connection is part of the equipment’s intended safety arrangement.
- Check the UPS documentation. Confirm the exact input requirements and plug configuration on the equipment label and in the manufacturer’s manual. If those details are unclear, contact the UPS manufacturer.
- Have the receptacle and circuit assessed. Ask a qualified electrician to verify the outlet, circuit rating, wiring, overcurrent protection, and applicable local requirements before any change is made.
The KitchenAid Burr Grinder Safety manual—guidance for that product, not the UPS—says, “Do not remove ground prong. Do not use an adapter,” and advises: “If the plug does not fit into the outlet, contact a qualified electrician. Do not modify the plug in any way.” KitchenAid Burr Grinder Safety manual. UC Riverside Environmental Health & Safety also advises against three-to-two-prong adapters in its guidance, and National Academies laboratory guidance cautions against two-pronged cheaters for grounded equipment. Those sources reinforce the grounding warning; they do not identify or approve an adapter for your UPS. UC Riverside electrical safety guidance · National Academies laboratory safety guidance.

Could an adapter or a new receptacle solve it?
Don’t assume so. A generic adapter—or one that lets a 20-amp plug connect to a 15-amp receptacle—does not establish that the UPS can be safely supplied by that circuit. A different receptacle is appropriate only if the UPS, circuit conductors, overcurrent protection, installation, and local requirements all support it. The available information cannot determine that for your home. Have an electrician verify the setup before choosing an adapter or replacing a receptacle.
