Start by identifying the growth: cottony fungus on a stem, wilting above the lesion and hard black specks can indicate Sclerotinia white mold, while white powder mainly on leaves or shoots is more consistent with powdery mildew. The cleanup and treatment differ, so a spray intended for powdery mildew will not solve Sclerotinia white mold. If the signs are unclear, ask a local extension office or plant diagnostic service to identify the problem.
1. Identify which kind of white growth you have
“White mold” is often used loosely. Look at where the growth appears and what is happening to the plant, rather than relying on color alone.
Clues to Sclerotinia white mold
- Cottony white growth appears on a stem or infected tissue.
- The stem may turn tan or bleached, dry and brittle; leaves above a stem lesion may wilt and die.
- Hard, irregular black structures called sclerotia may appear on or inside infected tissue. Infection can also begin on flowers or at stem joints, where tissue may look water-soaked before the stem dies and bleaches.
Sclerotinia can persist in soil and plant debris as sclerotia. University of Minnesota Extension says the fungus infects more than 400 plant species and its sclerotia can survive for five or more years (University of Minnesota Extension, reviewed 2026).
Clues to powdery mildew
Powdery mildew more often looks like white, dusty patches on leaf surfaces or shoots, and it may also affect flowers or fruit. Leaves can become distorted or yellow, or drop early. Unlike the wet-tissue context common in Sclerotinia descriptions, powdery mildew can infect without free water on leaf surfaces (UC IPM).

A white patch alone does not confirm either disease. Wisconsin Extension cautions that very few plant diseases can be accurately diagnosed by eye and offers a diagnostic service (University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension, 2024).
2. Remove infected tissue and dispose of it carefully
If Sclerotinia white mold is likely
Remove infected plants or tissue promptly and handle it carefully to limit the spread of sclerotia. Wisconsin Extension advises cutting four to five inches below visibly diseased tissue, or removing a severely affected plant altogether. It advises against composting infected material because sclerotia persist.

Disposal guidance differs by source and location. Minnesota Extension describes burning or burying material away from future garden beds, and allows home composting only if the compost reaches 148–158°F for at least 21 days. Do not assume an ordinary, cool home compost pile will destroy sclerotia; follow local disposal rules (University of Minnesota Extension; University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension).
If powdery mildew is likely
For an indoor plant, pick off individual infected leaves when practical and destroy them rather than leaving them with the plant. Maryland Extension presents leaf removal as a sanitation step; it does not establish that removing a few leaves clears the entire infection (University of Maryland Extension).

3. Change conditions and choose any follow-up for the disease
Reduce Sclerotinia risk
- Space plants to improve airflow.
- Limit overhead watering; use drip or soaker irrigation where practical.
- Remove infected plant debris rather than leaving it in the garden.
These steps can reduce favorable conditions and help with sanitation, but they do not guarantee immediate eradication: sclerotia can survive in soil and debris for years. University of Minnesota Extension educator Michelle Grabowski advises, “Remove and destroy infected plants right away.” (University of Minnesota Extension)
Manage powdery mildew differently
For powdery mildew, UC IPM recommends prevention through resistant varieties, suitable sunlight, good plant care and airflow. Indoors, reducing humidity and improving air circulation can help (UC IPM; University of Maryland Extension).

Neem or other plant-based oils may help with mild to moderate powdery mildew, but they are not a treatment for Sclerotinia white mold. UC IPM cautions against applying oils above 90°F, to water-stressed plants, or within two weeks of a sulfur application. Check the product label and plant-specific guidance before use; suitable fungicides depend on the host plant and location (UC IPM).

Seek local diagnostic help if you cannot tell whether the growth is powdery mildew or Sclerotinia, if the plant is wilting or collapsing, or if treatment depends on a pesticide. A short description or white surface growth alone may not be enough to identify the disease. University extension services can advise what sample to submit and which disposal or product guidance applies in your area.
