These 29 ideas show ways to use whites, neutrals, greens, blues, warm colors, darker shades, two-tone layouts, and finish details. Treat named colors as starting points: existing counters, floors, backsplash, and room lighting affect how a paint color looks.
Warm whites and neutral cabinet ideas
1. Paint every cabinet a soft white
A soft white across the full kitchen creates a calm, cohesive backdrop. Benjamin Moore’s Cloud Cover OC-25 cabinet makeover is one example; compare a current sample with your counters and backsplash before choosing a white. Benjamin Moore’s kitchen cabinet ideas shows the makeover.
2. Pair warm off-white with natural wood
Use a warm off-white on the cabinets and leave oak or another natural wood visible on shelves, trim, or furniture. Farrow & Ball’s Drop Cloth appears in a cabinet example alongside oak, offering a model for balancing painted surfaces with wood grain. Homes & Gardens’ cabinet color examples features the combination.
3. Use crisp white cabinets with a dark island
Keep the perimeter cabinetry white and make the island the contrasting anchor. Sherwin-Williams shows white cabinets with a black island and brass accents, a combination that pairs a light work area with a strong focal point. See Sherwin-Williams kitchen cabinet inspiration.

4. Choose gray for a restrained neutral scheme
Gray can bring more definition than white without the visual weight of a very dark color. Try it across all cabinets for a quiet scheme, or use a midtone if white counters and pale walls need a little contrast. Sherwin-Williams includes gray among its cabinet color observations, and Benjamin Moore includes gray in its timeless color guidance. Sherwin-Williams’ cabinet painting tips and Benjamin Moore’s ideas provide examples.
5. Try warm tan with copper accents
A tan-toned cabinet palette can soften a kitchen that feels stark. Sherwin-Williams shows Alabaster and Accessible Beige in a warm example with copper accents; use the metal finish to connect the cabinet color to lighting or cookware. Sherwin-Williams’ inspiration gallery shows this direction.
6. Paint cabinets earthy bronze
For a deeper neutral than tan or gray, consider an earthy bronze on the island or cabinetry. Sherwin-Williams identifies Urbane Bronze and shows it on an island, making this a useful option when a full dark perimeter would feel too heavy. View the Sherwin-Williams cabinet examples.
Soft greens, blues, and warm color
7. Put pale blue on the lower cabinets
Color on the lower cabinets adds interest while leaving upper walls and cabinets visually light. Benjamin Moore describes blue lower cabinets transforming a small kitchen; use the idea to introduce color without covering every cabinet face. Benjamin Moore’s cabinet inspiration includes the example.

Glass-front doors let dishes and glassware remain part of the palette. Benjamin Moore lists Ocean Air and Beacon Gray among soft color combinations for glass-front cabinetry. Sample the color beside the items you plan to display, since both the paint and contents will be visible. See the glass-front color suggestions.

9. Make blue the statement color
For a more vivid look, use a brighter blue on the cabinets and keep nearby surfaces comparatively simple. Sherwin-Williams’ inspiration examples pair blue cabinets with white, a straightforward way to give the color room to stand out. Explore the blue-and-white example.
10. Choose a muted green for a gentle accent
October Mist or Guilford Green are Benjamin Moore’s named examples of soft greens. Use a muted green on all the cabinets for a colored neutral, or restrict it to a smaller run if you want a more modest change. Benjamin Moore’s color ideas includes both shades.
11. Paint Shaker cabinets deep green
A deep green can emphasize the simple frame-and-panel lines of Shaker doors. Sherwin-Williams shows Pewter Green cabinets against a light backsplash, a pairing that keeps the wall area bright while the cabinetry carries the deeper color. See the Sherwin-Williams example.

Olive or moss green gives a kitchen an earthy direction; brass or aged-brass hardware adds a warm metal contrast. Homes & Gardens describes Farrow & Ball’s Bancha with gold or aged-brass hardware. Check a sample against your existing metal finishes before committing. Read the Bancha pairing example.
13. Make the island the only green surface
Apply the contrasting-island layout to a green palette: keep perimeter cabinets neutral and paint only the island. Sherwin-Williams’ examples establish the island as a contrasting focal point; green is an adaptation of that placement rather than a specific tested color prescription. Sherwin-Williams’ island examples show the layout.

14. Try warm yellow on glass-front cabinetry
Honeybee and Hawthorne Yellow are Benjamin Moore suggestions for glass-front cabinet color combinations. A warm yellow on selected doors can bring color into the room while leaving the contents visible; test it beside the backsplash and displayed dishes. See Benjamin Moore’s glass-front suggestions.
Saturated and dark cabinet ideas
15. Use navy for depth
Navy is one of Benjamin Moore’s suggested timeless darker choices. It can cover the full cabinet run or be reserved for lower cabinets when you want a dark foundation beneath lighter walls or uppers. Benjamin Moore’s cabinet color guidance includes navy.

16. Paint the island black against white cabinetry
A black island against white perimeter cabinets creates a clear contrast without making every cabinet dark. Sherwin-Williams includes this high-contrast arrangement in its inspiration examples, including brass accents. View the black-island example.
17. Choose charcoal for lower cabinets
Charcoal lowers with pale uppers use contrast to divide the kitchen visually. Benjamin Moore presents a white upper and dark-gray lower-and-island example; this arrangement is a useful template if you want depth below eye level. See the two-tone example.
18. Try pink-peach cabinets
A pink-peach cabinet color offers a gentler statement than a saturated red or a conventional neutral. Homes & Gardens describes Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster as a pink-peach direction. Brand Ambassador Patrick O’Donnell suggests it as an earthy alternative to a safe neutral; treat that as design advice, not a guarantee about how the shade will appear in your room. Read the Setting Plaster discussion.

19. Pair pink cabinets with dark wood
Dark wood accents can ground pink-peach cabinetry and add contrast through stools, shelves, or trim. Homes & Gardens describes dark wood as one possible pairing for Setting Plaster. The color feature gives this combination as an option.

For a lighter effect, combine pink-peach cabinets with pale stone or white wood rather than dark accents. This alternative pairing is also described for Setting Plaster by Homes & Gardens. Compare samples in the kitchen’s actual light before choosing between the lighter and darker contrast. See the suggested pairings.

21. Put lighter paint on top and darker paint below
Sherwin-Williams calls lighter uppers with darker lowers a two-tone “tuxedo” look. This split can preserve a bright upper half while giving the base cabinets more visual weight. Read Sherwin-Williams’ two-tone cabinet guidance.
22. Combine white uppers with charcoal lowers
For a specific light-and-dark version, use white on the upper cabinets and charcoal or dark gray on the lower run. Benjamin Moore shows a white upper with dark gray lowers and island, a documented example of the arrangement. See Benjamin Moore’s two-tone inspiration.
23. Paint only the island
If you do not want to repaint every cabinet, make the island the sole painted focal point and retain the perimeter finish. Sherwin-Williams’ cabinet inspiration shows contrasting islands, and its painting guide discusses an island-focused update. Read the Sherwin-Williams cabinet painting guide and view its kitchen examples.

24. Keep the existing hardware
A paint refresh does not require new knobs or pulls. Benjamin Moore documents a cabinet makeover that retains existing countertops and hardware, showing that the painted change can stand on its own. See the documented makeover.
Sheen and finishing details
25. Use one color in different sheens
For subtle contrast rather than a second color, use a lower sheen on the walls and a glossier finish on the cabinets. Benjamin Moore notes that different sheens of the same color reflect light differently, so the surfaces can read distinctly even when their hue matches. Benjamin Moore’s finish guidance explains the effect.
26. Choose satin for a restrained cabinet finish
Satin is one cabinet finish option discussed by Benjamin Moore. Select a coating rated for the cabinet substrate and intended use, and follow its product label; the sheen name alone does not determine whether a paint system is suitable. See Benjamin Moore’s cabinet finish guidance.
27. Choose semi-gloss for a brighter reflection
Benjamin Moore describes semi-gloss as a popular cabinet finish and suggests it as one way to contrast cabinets with lower-sheen walls. The stronger reflection can make surface details and imperfections more noticeable, so assess the finish on a sample before painting the full run. Read its sheen suggestions.

28. Use high-gloss for a more reflective look
High-gloss is another Benjamin Moore cabinet option. Because sheen changes how light reflects from the surface, a color in high-gloss may look different from the same color in a lower sheen; check the coating’s suitability and sample it in the room. Benjamin Moore’s guidance discusses sheen and reflection.
29. Replace knobs and pulls—or mix them
New knobs, pulls, or a mix of the two can finish a cabinet refresh, but they are optional. Sherwin-Williams suggests hardware as a finishing touch. Before ordering replacements, measure the existing pull-hole spacing if you want to reuse the holes; changing spacing can mean filling and refinishing old holes. See Sherwin-Williams’ hardware suggestions.
Before painting: match preparation to the cabinet surface
Good color selection will not compensate for poor adhesion. Preparation depends on the cabinet material and the paint system, so follow the coating manufacturer’s label and local safety requirements rather than assuming every surface needs identical treatment.
- Remove and label components. Sherwin-Williams advises removing doors and hardware. Behr likewise advises removing hardware, doors, and drawers.
- Clean thoroughly. Sherwin-Williams recommends degreasing; Behr also calls for cleaning before painting. Let surfaces dry fully.
- Address the existing finish and substrate. Sherwin-Williams advises testing primer adhesion in an inconspicuous area and addressing gloss and imperfections. Behr recommends scuff-sanding glossy prior coatings, wiping away dust, and priming new cabinets. It says laminate and melamine can be painted when cleaned, scuff-sanded, and primed; those directions should not be generalized to all materials.
- Apply primer and paint as specified. Sherwin-Williams describes brushing detailed areas and rolling flat sections. Use the tools and products specified for your cabinet surface and coating.
- Allow the coating to dry before reassembly. Sherwin-Williams’ guide says to wait 24–48 hours after the first coat and again after the second before reinstalling hardware. This is that guide’s instruction, not a universal drying time; product, temperature, humidity, and other conditions can change the required wait.
For step-by-step instructions, consult Sherwin-Williams’ cabinet painting guide and Behr’s cabinet painting guide.
