There aren’t eight established reasons to routinely use Epsom salt in flower beds. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and it may be useful only when a soil test indicates a need for magnesium or sulfur and local recommendations support applying it. Without that evidence, adding it can introduce unnecessary salts and may interfere with nutrient uptake.
What Epsom salt does in garden soil
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. University of Maryland Extension describes it as a highly soluble source of magnesium (10%) and sulfur (13%); those percentages describe the product’s composition, not a proven increase in blooms or plant growth. It does not supply the primary fertilizer nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium, as University of Illinois Extension explains in its answer about Epsom salt and flowers.
Magnesium is a plant nutrient, but that does not mean every flower bed needs more of it. NC State Extension says Epsom salt “can sometimes be beneficial, especially in sandy soils that may be low in sulfur or magnesium,” and recommends using a soil test to guide any adjustment. Sandy soil is a possible reason to check, not proof that an application is needed.
When an application may be appropriate
Use Epsom salt only when a soil test identifies a magnesium need and the report or local Extension guidance recommends magnesium sulfate. A test helps determine both whether an amendment is warranted and the appropriate amount. Clemson Extension recommends testing through an accredited soil or agricultural lab and cautions that home kits can be inaccurate or inconsistent.

Recommendations depend on the soil-test result and local guidance. For example, Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Soil Test Note 19 recommends 1 pound of Epsom salt per 100 square feet for flower and vegetable gardens when soil-test nutrients are low and limestone is not recommended. That is a recommendation for the publication’s specified soil-test circumstances, not a general rate for all beds. If the report recommends lime, follow its lime recommendation rather than substituting Epsom salt.
When not to use it—and what to do instead
- No test-supported need: Don’t add Epsom salt as routine maintenance. Follow local recommendations based on a soil test.
- Yellowing, weak growth, or poor flowering: Don’t assume magnesium deficiency. Diagnose the underlying problem and use the soil report to guide any amendment.
- Slug damage: Epsom salt mixed into soil is not slug control. University of Illinois Extension home horticulture specialist James Schmidt says, “It will do nothing to control slugs once it is added to the soil.”
- Blossom end rot: Epsom salt will not prevent or reverse it. Maryland Extension notes that excess magnesium can make calcium less available.
Why more can be harmful
More is not automatically better. Excess Epsom salt can add unnecessary salts to garden soil, and excess magnesium can interfere with the uptake or availability of other nutrients. Clemson Extension discusses the salt risk in its March 17, 2025 guidance; UF/IFAS also recommends soil testing before application because excess magnesium can interfere with nutrient uptake.

Keep greenhouse directions separate
Some Epsom salt directions are written for diagnosed magnesium deficiency in controlled commercial greenhouse media. UMass Extension’s commercial floriculture soil-test guidance concerns greenhouse conditions; those directions are not outdoor flower-bed application instructions.
