8 Reasons Your Kalanchoe Is Leggy—and What to Do About It

If your kalanchoe has long, stretched stems, inadequate light is the clearest documented cause. The other clues below help distinguish stretching from a plant that is simply sparse, naturally different in shape, or still carrying old growth. Brighten its location first; if you dislike the existing shape, pruning can reset it.

Why is my kalanchoe so leggy? Eight things to check

These eight checks are not eight independently proven biological causes. Low light is the main substantiated cause of stretching; several other items are clues, care contexts, or lookalikes that can make a plant seem leggy.

  1. It is in a dim indoor location

This is the leading explanation for long, stretched growth. The University of Maryland Extension says a leggy kalanchoe is not receiving enough light, and North Carolina State Extension likewise identifies inadequate sunlight as a cause of leggy growth in Kalanchoe delagoensis. Put the plant in a brighter indoor location and assess the new growth. University of Maryland Extension; North Carolina State Extension.

  2. It leans toward light from one side

A plant leaning toward a window is a useful clue to inspect where its light comes from, especially if the room is generally dim. The extension sources support low light as a cause of legginess, but do not establish one-sided light as a separate kalanchoe-specific cause.

  3. Seasonal indoor light is no longer enough

When natural light indoors changes with the season, a location that once seemed bright may no longer support compact new growth. This is an application of the documented low-light finding, not a claim that kalanchoe has a particular seasonal light threshold. University of Maryland Extension; North Carolina State Extension.

  4. It has finished flowering and is kept in low light

After flowering, a kalanchoe kept in too little light can put on ungainly growth, according to New Hampshire Extension. The post-flowering timing helps explain when the problem appears; it does not make flowering itself the cause. New Hampshire Extension.

  5. Older tall growth has not been cut back

Unpruned stems can leave the plant looking tall even after you improve its growing conditions. That explains why the shape remains, not why the stems stretched in the first place. Pruning is an optional way to reshape a healthy plant.

  6. It is a different kalanchoe type or cultivar

“Kalanchoe” covers different plants, including florist kalanchoe and K. delagoensis. Do not assume that a description or care detail for one species precisely describes every kalanchoe. The cited sources do not quantify how light needs differ among cultivars.

  7. Leaf loss makes it look leggy

A plant with dropped leaves can look sparse without having stretched stems. Too little light, excess watering, and poor drainage can contribute to leaf-drop or other health problems, but the sources do not establish overwatering as an independent cause of stem elongation. Check whether the spaces between leaves have lengthened or whether leaves have simply fallen. University of Minnesota Extension; North Carolina State Extension.

  8. Flower-induction darkness is being mistaken for a fix

Florist kalanchoe uses long, uninterrupted nights for several weeks to initiate flower buds. That is a flowering technique, not a remedy for stretched stems. Keep the distinction clear: bright daytime conditions support growth, while extended nights are used to encourage flowering. University of Minnesota Extension; New Hampshire Extension.

What to do about a leggy kalanchoe

  1. Choose a brighter location

Start with a bright indoor spot. The extension guidance supports bright light but does not establish that every home needs a grow light. In practical terms, use available natural brightness if you can do so without exposing the plant to harsh conditions; supplemental lighting is an option if a suitably bright location is not available. The cited sources do not compare products or specify tested light settings.

  2. Give new growth time to show the effect

Once the plant is in a brighter spot, watch the growth that follows. Existing stretched stems will not become compact again simply because conditions improve, so judge the change by new growth and decide separately whether to prune the old shape.

  3. Keep watering and drainage sensible

Let the soil dry between waterings without allowing the plant to wilt, and use a pot with good drainage. These steps help avoid leaf-loss problems that can make a plant look sparse; they do not substitute for adequate light. University of Minnesota Extension.

Should I cut it back, or keep its current shape?

Choose based on the plant’s health and the look you want. If the kalanchoe is healthy but too tall or uneven for your space, pruning is a practical reset. Missouri Extension suggests cutting a tall, leggy plant back to about half its height; treat that as an option, not a universal rule. If you like its existing form, retain it and focus on brighter conditions for future growth. Missouri Extension.

How to prune and root healthy cuttings

  1. Cut back the stems you want to reshape

Use clean pruning snips and reduce an overly tall plant to about half its height if that suits its shape and condition. The half-height suggestion comes from Missouri Extension; it is not a required amount for every plant. Missouri Extension.

  2. Let stem tips harden before planting

Healthy stem tips can be propagated. Let the cut ends dry and harden for a day or two, then place them in a well-draining mix. The University of Maryland Extension response estimates roots may develop in about two to three weeks; this is an approximate expectation from a response to one reader, not a guarantee.
