These seven projects show how varied a 3D-printed home can look: from ribbed concrete paired with timber to rounded earth-built forms and an eight-square-metre urban cabin. “Most beautiful” is a matter of taste, so this is a curated selection based on form, material expression, daylight and setting—not a ranked competition. The projects also differ in scale and purpose: some are design experiments or field trials, while others have been occupied or developed as community housing.
What makes a 3D-printed house beautiful?
In these projects, the printed construction is part of the architecture rather than merely a hidden building method. Layered walls create texture and rhythm; rounded shapes make earth construction feel sculptural; and contrasts with wood, glazing or planted surroundings keep the printed surface from dominating every room. The examples are not all made the same way: the selection includes concrete-printing systems and earth-based mixtures, and printing may form only part of a building.
Seven distinctive 3D-printed houses and cabins
1. House Zero — Austin, Texas
Designed by Lake Flato and built by ICON, House Zero sets ribbed printed concrete walls against wood, large windows and generous daylight. The result makes the construction method visible while using warmer materials and clear openings to soften the effect. ICON lists the project as completed in 2022 and describes a plan of 2,372 square feet, four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. Lake Flato gives the project size as 3,000 square feet; those figures have different source definitions and should not be treated as identical measurements. ICON’s House Zero project page and Lake Flato’s project page document the design. Lake Flato describes it as both a demonstration project and a field trial for ICON’s concrete wall printing system, with a net-zero-energy design intent.
Lake Flato associate partner Lewis McNeel described the approach this way: “We embraced new materials and an innovative assembly process, and used simple moves to accomplish many things at once, there’s a celebration of structural framing and using earthy materials as the actual finishes.”

2. TECLA — Massa Lombarda, Italy
TECLA, designed by Mario Cucinella Architects and engineered and built by WASP, turns locally sourced raw earth into a pair of rounded, ribbed volumes. Its softened silhouette and textured surface give it a more organic appearance than a conventional rectilinear house. WASP presents it as a circular habitat concept made with reusable and recyclable materials sourced from local terrain; that is the project’s stated design intent, not an independently verified lifecycle assessment. The structure was made using WASP’s Crane WASP construction printer. See WASP’s TECLA project page.
Architect Mario Cucinella called the completed structure an important milestone, saying it showed that TECLA could move from a theoretical idea to “a real and achievable response to the needs of living today and the future.”

3. GAIA — Massa Lombarda, Italy
WASP’s GAIA, inaugurated in 2018, demonstrates how an earth-based printed wall can work with conventional building elements. Its compact interior surface is 20 square metres, while the printed wall envelope covers 30 square metres. WASP says the wall mixture combined local soil, chopped rice straw, rice husk and hydraulic lime. The roof uses wood and lime-and-chaff insulation, so the whole house is not 3D printed.
WASP reported that printing the 30-square-metre wall envelope took 10 days and that the wall structure’s material cost was €900 in 2018. These figures apply to the printed wall scope, not the complete house. Project details are on WASP’s GAIA page.

4. Urban Cabin — Amsterdam, Netherlands
DUS Architects’ Urban Cabin is the selection’s literal cabin: an eight-square-metre summer house created in 2015 for the 3D Print Canal House Foundation. Its black bio-based printed material, ornamental façade details and stepped porch give the tiny structure a distinct presence beside a pocket park. The close relationship between its interior and outdoor setting is as important to its character as the printed shell. It is an architectural experiment, not a conventional full-size home. See DUS Architects’ Urban Cabin project page.
5. Kamp C — Westerlo, Belgium
Kamp C is a two-storey concrete-printed house unveiled in July 2020. Its straightforward massing makes the scale of the printed walls easy to read, while its height gives it a different profile from the smaller experimental structures in this list. COBOD reports an eight-metre height and 90 square metres of floor area; printing took place on site with a BOD2 printer. COBOD says accumulated printing time was three weeks. The printer maker also estimated savings of 60% in material, time and budget through reduced formwork; that is a company estimate for this project, not an independently verified or broadly applicable comparison. Project manager Emiel Ascione noted, “What makes this house so unique is that we printed it with a fixed 3D concrete printer”. More detail appears in COBOD’s Kamp C case study.

6. Project Milestone — Eindhoven, Netherlands
Project Milestone is notable for moving beyond a demonstration structure toward actual occupancy. The first concrete-printed home in the project was presented in April 2021, and the project’s Phase 1 page says its first occupant received the key on April 30, 2021. The project brought together Eindhoven University of Technology, Van Wijnen, Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix, Vesteda, the municipality and Witteveen+Bos, among others. Its Phase 1 page describes the initial demonstrator; the project website now also discusses later development, including Phase 2 and an October 2025 update about homes for sale. Those later plans are separate from the first 2021 home.
7. Initiative 99 — Austin, Texas
ICON’s Initiative 99 is a community project shaped by an affordability goal. The design competition invited proposals for homes intended to be buildable for $99,000 or less using ICON construction technology. ICON says award-winning designs by Guerin Glass Architects and ConCave were selected for an expansion of Community First! Village. Its page lists four structures and a 2026 completion label. The $99,000 figure is the competition’s target, not a confirmed final construction cost or sale price. See ICON’s Initiative 99 page.

What these examples tell you about 3D-printed homes
- “3D-printed” describes a construction method, not one architectural style. Concrete systems can produce crisp, layered walls, while earth mixtures can support rounded forms and textured surfaces.
- The printer does not necessarily make the entire building. GAIA, for example, pairs its printed wall envelope with a wood roof and insulation.
- Scale ranges from a tiny cabin to multi-room homes and community housing. DUS’s Urban Cabin is eight square metres, while House Zero and Kamp C represent substantially larger residential projects.
- Status matters as much as appearance. Urban Cabin is an experiment, House Zero a demonstration and field trial, and Project Milestone’s first home was handed over to an occupant.
- Project-specific performance figures need their original scope. Time, cost and savings claims from project makers do not establish what another printed home will cost or how quickly it can be built.
