If by “burn marks” you mean burns to skin, these seven household habits can reduce common risks. A burn is usually caused by dry heat; a scald comes from hot liquid or steam, so prevention means guarding against both contact with hot surfaces and splashes. Scorch marks on plugs or sockets are different: treat them as a possible electrical warning sign, not a cosmetic problem.
1. Turn pan handles inward and secure nearby objects
Turn saucepan handles away from the edge of the stove so they are less likely to be bumped or grabbed. Keep other objects where they cannot be pulled down or knocked over. These small changes reduce the chance that hot food or liquid spills onto someone.
2. Use dry oven mitts or potholders
Use a dry oven mitt or potholder when handling hot cookware. The U.S. Fire Administration warns: “Hot cookware can heat moisture in a potholder or hot pad, resulting in a scald burn.” A heat-resistant mitt can help with handling, but it is not a guarantee of protection and should be kept dry.
3. Keep children away from active cooking
Set a kid-free zone of at least 3 feet (about 1 metre) around the stove, as the U.S. Fire Administration advises. Do not leave children alone in the kitchen while cooking on the hob, and keep pan handles out of their reach.

4. Keep sleeves close-fitting and fabrics away from the cooker
Wear short, close-fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking; loose clothing can catch fire. Keep tea towels, potholders, packaging, and other flammable materials away from the cooker or hob. Avoid setting down cloths where they could fall onto a hot surface or open flame.
5. Stay with hot oil and control the heat
Do not leave cooking unattended, especially when using oil or high heat. Dry food before putting it into hot oil to reduce splashing. If the oil begins to smoke, turn off the heat: smoking oil is too hot. Keep the cooker clean to prevent grease build-up, and switch it off before leaving.

6. Reduce ignition risks beyond the kitchen
Burns can start with everyday heat sources elsewhere in the home. Keep candles attended and away from combustible materials; place portable heaters away from curtains and furniture; and do not dry clothes on or near heaters. Avoid smoking in bed or when drowsy. Keep electrical appliances clean and in good working order.
Recognize electrical warning signs
Scorch marks around plugs or sockets, flickering lights, repeatedly blown fuses, a burning smell, sparks, or appliances that feel unusually hot can signal an electrical problem. Stop using the suspect appliance or outlet and have it checked by a qualified professional, or replace the faulty appliance. Do not treat scorch marks as something to cover up and ignore.

7. Take extra care with fabrics exposed to emollients
Residue from emollient creams, ointments, lotions, and gels can remain on clothing, bedding, and furnishings. NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service guidance published on 24 June 2026 warns that contaminated fabrics can increase the risk of severe or fatal burns if they meet an ignition source.
- Change and wash clothing and bedding regularly.
- Keep fabrics that may carry residue away from cookers, heaters, and open fires.
- Avoid smoking and naked flames while wearing clothing that may be contaminated.
Do not stop a prescribed emollient solely because of this risk. Continue treatment as clinically indicated and ask a clinician or pharmacist for individualized advice if you or someone you care for is at higher risk.

Why these precautions matter
In a release dated 7 February 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that 193,450 burn injuries involving consumer products were treated in U.S. emergency rooms in 2021. The agency also estimated that children under 10 accounted for 26% of those consumer-product-related burn injuries treated that year. These are historical estimates for 2021, not current annual counts.

This is a prevention guide, not a treatment guide. NHS advice is to cool a burn or scald under cool running water for 20 minutes as soon as possible. Seek emergency care for very large or deep burns, burns to the face, genitals, or bottom, and burns caused by chemicals or electricity. If you are unsure what care is needed in the UK, call NHS 111.
