1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep garden beds covered through winter, using a locally suitable cover crop where there is time to establish one or an organic mulch when sowing is impractical. Also limit foot traffic and avoid unnecessary turning, especially when soil is wet. In spring, manage any cover-crop residue according to when the next crop needs to go in.
1. Keep garden beds covered
Winter weather can leave bare garden soil more exposed to erosion and nutrient loss. A layer of organic material or a living cover crop shields the surface; Cornell Cooperative Extension discusses avoiding bare, exposed beds and unnecessary soil disturbance in its soil-health guidance, while Virginia Tech Extension describes winter protection from cover crops in Fall Vegetable Gardening.
2. Sow a cover crop when the timing works
A living cover can help reduce erosion and weeds, and can add organic matter when managed in spring. The right species and sowing date depend on your region, local conditions, and the next crop you plan to grow; there is no single seed mix or calendar date that fits every garden. Check local extension guidance, such as Virginia Tech Extension’s cover-crop advice and N.C. Cooperative Extension’s overview.
Where a field has a history of compaction, N.C. Cooperative Extension identifies radish or turnip as possible cover-crop choices. That is a context-specific option, not a guarantee that planting either crop will fix compaction.

3. Mulch if there is not time to establish a crop
When the suitable sowing window has passed, or weather and workflow make planting impractical, cover the surface with organic material such as straw, shredded leaves, compost, or plant waste. University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s 2021 guidance gives 3–4 inches of leaves as an example to help reduce erosion and nutrient leaching and feed beneficial soil organisms. That depth is specific to the source’s advice about leaves, not a universal depth for every mulch or bed.
4. Keep traffic off protected beds
Walking or working repeatedly on garden beds can compact soil. Keep routine foot traffic out where possible, and be especially careful when soil is wet. Cornell Cooperative Extension advises against compaction and excessive winter turning in its soil-health guidance.

5. Take extra care with sloped beds
On a slope, mulch can shift or wash away more readily. An Ask Extension response suggests covering mulch with landscape fabric or old burlap as an optional way to help limit movement, compaction, and erosion. This is an added measure for a specific situation, not a standard requirement for every mulched bed.
6. Plan spring cover-crop management around planting
A cover crop needs to be handled in spring, and the best approach depends on how soon the next crop must be planted. Virginia Tech Extension notes that incorporating a cover crop can add organic material. Oregon State University Extension explains that when there is not enough time for residue to decompose before planting, it can instead be removed for use as mulch or compost, or incorporated more deeply; see its cover-crop guidance for vegetable production.

7. Choose the cover that fits your calendar and workflow
Both living cover and mulch protect soil, but they call for different spring work. Use a cover crop when you can sow an appropriate species early enough for it to establish and you can plan its management before the next planting. Choose mulch when the sowing window or weather makes establishment impractical, or when you want a surface cover that does not require growing and terminating a crop.
| Consideration | Cover crop | Organic mulch |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Requires a suitable local species and sowing window. | Can be applied when sowing a crop is impractical; material availability varies. |
| Spring work | Plan for managing living plants or residue before the next crop. | Usually remains as surface cover; the amount and handling depend on the material and planting plan. |
| Best fit | When there is time to establish a crop and a workable spring management plan. | When time, weather, or the garden schedule does not suit cover cropping. |
For regional timing and species, rely on local Cooperative Extension recommendations rather than a generic calendar.
