To grow camellias successfully, match the species and cultivar to your local climate, available light, and space; plant in acidic, well-drained soil; water regularly while roots establish; and prune after flowering. These seven tips cover the site and care decisions that most affect a camellia in the landscape.
1. Choose a camellia suited to your site
Start with the growing conditions you can provide, then choose a species and cultivar that fit them. Camellia japonica generally prefers partial shade. Camellia sasanqua tolerates more sun and commonly flowers in late fall and winter. Flowering season and performance vary by cultivar, so check the plant label and local suitability rather than assuming every variety behaves alike.
Before buying, confirm the cultivar’s expected mature dimensions and its suitability for your local hardiness conditions. Regional nurseries or camellia societies may be able to help identify varieties that perform well nearby.
2. Allow room for the mature plant
Camellias can serve as accents, borders, hedges, foundation plantings, or screens, but their eventual size depends on species and cultivar. North Carolina State Extension describes the genus as ranging from about 2 to 20 feet tall and 2 to 10 feet wide. Use the mature dimensions for the specific plant you are considering to set spacing; a young plant’s nursery-pot size is not a guide to how much room it will need.

3. Give them filtered light and shelter
Partial shade suits many camellias. Protect plants from harsh afternoon sun and, where relevant, cold, drying winds. Sasanqua generally tolerates more sun than japonica, particularly when it receives adequate water. Deep shade can reduce foliage density and flowering, so aim for filtered light rather than assuming that less sun is always better.
4. Prepare acidic, well-drained soil
Camellias prefer soil that is acidic, rich in organic matter, and drains well. The recommended pH depends on the source and scope: UF/IFAS gives a range of 5.0–6.5 for camellias, while North Carolina State Extension gives 5.5–6.5 for C. japonica. A soil test can help determine whether your planting area is suitable.

If the ground is alkaline or stays waterlogged, address those conditions before planting. Container growing can be an alternative where the garden soil is unsuitable, provided the container and growing medium drain well.
5. Water consistently while roots establish
Water regularly through the first year as the plant establishes. Afterward, rainfall may be enough in some regions, but irrigate during extended dry periods. Check the soil and plant condition rather than following a calendar blindly: waterlogged roots can develop root rot, while needs vary with weather, soil, exposure, and plant age.

UF/IFAS offers a Florida-specific reference for extended dry periods: 1 inch of water every 10 days to two weeks, and 1 inch per week during flowering. Treat that as regional guidance, not a universal schedule.
6. Prune after flowering
Camellias usually need only limited pruning. Shape or groom the plant soon after flowering, before late summer, when buds for the following season form. Pruning after those buds have developed can remove them and reduce the next bloom. Sasanqua often needs only occasional grooming because of its natural form and relatively slow growth.

7. Inspect plants and diagnose problems
Check foliage, stems, and flowers periodically so you can respond to a specific issue rather than treating a symptom without identifying its cause. Potential problems include tea scale, aphids, spider mites, petal blight, leaf gall, and root or crown rot.
- Aphids and spider mites: UF/IFAS notes that they may be dislodged with water.
- Tea scale: Look for symptoms and confirm the diagnosis; UF/IFAS notes that an approved horticultural oil may be needed.
- Flower and root diseases: Petal blight, leaf gall, and root or crown rot are among the problems cataloged by UC IPM. Poor drainage is a concern where root rot is suspected.
Use any pesticide only after confirming the problem and following the product label and local requirements.

Japonica or sasanqua: which fits your landscape?
| Consideration | Camellia japonica | Camellia sasanqua |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Generally performs best in partial shade. | Tolerates more sun than japonica; adequate irrigation matters in sunnier locations. |
| Flowering season | Not stated in the cited guidance as a general season for the species. | Commonly flowers in late fall and winter. |
| Size and form | Varies by cultivar; check mature dimensions. | Varies by cultivar; often has a natural form that needs only occasional grooming. |
| Site decision | Consider where filtered light and shelter are available. | Consider where a sunnier position or late-fall-to-winter flowers suit the landscape. |
Both species still need a locally suitable cultivar and well-drained, acidic soil. Confirm the nursery’s identification and expected mature size before planting.
