You can create a lush Mediterranean-inspired garden in many climates, but the plants need to suit your garden’s sun, soil, drainage, exposure, and winter temperatures. Build the look with layered evergreen structure, aromatic herbs, silvery foliage, and flowers; then water new plants while they establish and adjust ongoing care to local conditions.
1. Read the site before choosing plants
Start by noting how many hours of direct sun each area receives, where shade falls, and where cold winds, standing water, or runoff are likely. Check your soil and how quickly water drains. Many Mediterranean-style plants prefer full sun and well-drained soil, but their tolerances differ, and some need shelter.
These checks matter more than the garden’s visual theme: a plant described as Mediterranean is not automatically hardy in your winters or suited to your soil. The Royal Horticultural Society’s plant recommendations are UK-oriented, while University of California guidance reflects California conditions; neither is a universal planting list.
2. Choose a climate-safe backbone
Use evergreen shrubs and taller plants to give the garden shape through the year, then add lower herbs and flowering perennials. Rosemary and phlomis are options for suitable sites; lavender and sage bring fragrance and flowers. Cypress or a palm can create vertical emphasis where space, exposure, and winter temperatures permit.

Check a plant’s mature size, local hardiness, sun and drainage requirements, and water needs before buying. RHS guidance says mature olives can be damaged when temperatures fall to about −10°C (14°F). It notes that some palms need protection below −5°C (23°F), while Trachycarpus fortunei is listed as hardy to around −15°C (5°F). Those figures are UK-oriented guidance, not guarantees for every cultivar or garden. Where an olive is too tender for the site, grow it in a movable pot if you can provide winter cover, or choose a locally suitable substitute.
3. Layer heights, shapes, and foliage
A garden looks abundant when different forms overlap: a taller focal plant, rounded shrubs, low aromatic plants, and flowering perennials. Mix leaf textures and tones as well as flower colors. Silver or grey foliage can contrast with deep green evergreens, while herbs soften the edges of paths and beds.

The RHS suggests combinations such as cypress with rosemary or phlomis, and phlomis with lavender and rosemary. Treat these as design prompts, then confirm each plant fits your climate and site. A varied planting creates a fuller effect without relying on a lawn or one signature species.
4. Let herbs work in beds and containers
Rosemary, sage, thyme, marjoram, oregano, and winter savory can make a useful aromatic planting. Their needs often align in a sunny, sheltered position with good drainage, though local climate and the particular plant still matter.

For a compact container example, the RHS recommends a pot at least 20 cm (8 in) deep, with drainage holes, and spacing herb plants 15–20 cm (6–8 in) apart. Its guidance suggests a light gravel or bark surface mulch to help retain moisture and keep foliage clean. Containers dry at different rates depending on their size, exposure, and weather, so check the growing medium rather than relying on a fixed watering interval.
5. Prepare soil for the plants you selected
Use your soil and drainage checks to decide what, if anything, to change. Organic matter can improve soil structure and water-holding capacity, but do not assume every Mediterranean-style plant wants rich, moist soil. Plants that need sharp drainage may fare poorly if amendments leave their roots wet.

A gravel garden can suit drought-tolerant planting in a sunny, well-drained position. Choose plants first, then make soil improvements to support their actual needs rather than applying one treatment across the whole garden.

Mulch can help suppress weeds and slow moisture loss from the soil surface. For general drought-resistant gardening, the RHS recommends a surface mulch at least 5 cm (2 in) thick; for Mediterranean-style planting it suggests 5–7.5 cm (2–3 in) of gravel. These are RHS guidance values, not a universal prescription: select material and depth for the plants, soil, and local conditions. Gravel or grit can suit dry planting where a thick organic mulch would be a poor fit.

7. Water for establishment, then adapt
Water newly planted shrubs and perennials into the root zone and keep them watered while they establish. Drought tolerance describes a plant’s ability to cope after it is established; it does not mean a new planting needs no water. Larger plants may take longer to establish, and the right frequency depends on weather, soil, and plant needs.
Group plants with similar water requirements so irrigation is easier to manage. In larger beds, drip or other low-output irrigation can direct water toward roots, but inspect emitters and adjust the schedule as conditions change. UC Integrated Pest Management guidance notes that short irrigation cycles separated by pauses can improve infiltration and reduce runoff. Use that principle in light of your own soil and any local watering restrictions rather than copying a California-specific schedule.
