Deadheading during bloom can tidy plants, may encourage more flowers, and reduces seed production; leaving seed heads supports birds and allows self-seeding. For winter habitat, keep the old stems standing and cut them back in spring before new growth.
Should I deadhead coneflowers?
Choose what you want from the plant before you cut. Deadheading is not required: coneflowers can continue flowering without it. It is a useful choice for a tidier display or fewer seedlings, and it may extend flowering or encourage another flush. The response can vary among Echinacea species and cultivars.
- For a neater display or fewer seedlings: remove selected faded flower heads.
- For seeds and wildlife: leave some or all heads standing.
- For winter habitat: postpone the main cleanup until spring.
North Carolina State Extension says deadheading prolongs flowering for Echinacea angustifolia, while Iowa State University Extension and Outreach notes that deadheading may promote repeat blooms. These are possible benefits, not a guarantee for every coneflower.
How to prune coneflowers during the growing season
1. Remove spent flowers selectively
When a flower fades, you can cut off its head and stem rather than shearing the whole plant. Deadheading means removing faded flowers before they form seed. Use clean hand pruning shears, and avoid cutting healthy stems simply to make every plant the same height: extension guidance does not set one cut position for all Echinacea species and cultivars.

- INCLUDES: (1) Fiskars Bypass Pruning Shears designed for everyday gardening and plant care and backed by a Lifetime Warranty. Product care tips: Wipe pruners clean after each use to prevent sap build-up and lightly oil blade for longer product life
2. Keep some seed heads for birds
If you want winter food and garden interest, leave a portion of the cones in place. University of Illinois Extension reports that goldfinches use coneflower seed heads and that removing heads reduces their seed and forage value. Penn State Extension likewise notes that purple coneflower seed heads feed goldfinches.
3. Remove heads where seedlings are unwelcome
Coneflowers produce seed and may spread in the garden. Removing faded heads before they set seed can help limit volunteer seedlings. If you welcome self-seeding, leave selected heads to mature instead of deadheading every flower.

When should I cut back coneflowers?
4. Leave stems through winter if habitat matters
You can clean up at the end of the growing season or wait until spring. Waiting leaves seed heads available to wildlife and standing stems that can provide nesting habitat for native bees. University of Vermont Extension describes both fall and spring cleanup as options; the choice depends on whether you prefer an immediate tidy-up or winter habitat.
5. Cut old growth in spring before new growth
For purple coneflower, Penn State Extension advises: “In the spring, cut back completely before new growth begins.” Use the start of new growth as your cue rather than relying on a universal calendar date; spring timing varies by local conditions.

- LONG-LASTING SHARPNESS: Japanese SK5 bypass blade with titanium coating is tested through 5,000 cuts to maintain a sharp edge and deliver clean, consistent cuts on live stems and branches
- BUILT FOR 5X DURABILITY: Heavy-duty 3-layer titanium-coated SK5 blade resists wear and corrosion, while anodized aluminum handles and high-hardness screws reinforce the pruner. Repeated cutting tests show up to 5X the durability of standard pruners
- POWERFUL 4X LEVER CUTTING: The optimized lever-action design multiplies cutting force up to 4X, making thicker branches easier to prune with less hand effort. Cuts branches up to 3/4" with smooth, controlled power for everyday garden pruning
- ARTHRITIS & SENIORS FRIENDLY: Ergonomic non-slip rubber handles cushion pressure and provide a secure, comfortable grip, helping reduce hand and wrist fatigue. A comfortable hand pruner for seniors, arthritis and longer pruning sessions
- ONE-HAND SAFETY LOCK: The easy-access safety lock opens and closes with one hand for faster trimming, then securely holds the blades closed for safer carrying and storage
6. Decide whether to clean up in fall
If you prefer a tidier garden through winter, you can cut back old stems at season’s end. The tradeoff is that an autumn cleanup removes seed heads and upright stems earlier. If retaining those features matters, leave them until spring.
7. Mix approaches across the planting
You do not have to treat every plant the same way. Deadhead flowers where you want to reduce seedlings, leave other cones for birds or reseeding, and keep some stems standing through winter. This balances appearance, flowering, seed production, and habitat without aggressive routine pruning.
