Repeated breaker trips, flickering lights, warm outlets, and even a mild tingle from an appliance can signal an electrical hazard. You can make a few safe observations without opening electrical equipment, but do not keep resetting protective devices or try to diagnose wiring yourself. Stop using equipment that shows warning signs and call a qualified electrician.

1. Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A breaker or fuse interrupts current when it detects a fault or overload, helping protect circuit wires from overheating. A trip can result from an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, an arc fault, or a defective breaker; the symptom alone does not identify which. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) recommends switching off or unplugging loads and resetting a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, stop resetting it and arrange an electrician’s diagnosis.

  • Do not replace a fuse with one rated for more current, bypass a breaker, or repeatedly reset a tripping breaker or AFCI.
  • An AFCI detects arc faults to help reduce fire risk. It does not replace GFCI protection, which addresses ground-fault shock risk; the right device and installation depend on the circuit, panel, wiring, and local requirements. See ESFI’s AFCI guidance.

2. Why are my lights flickering or dimming?

Flickering or dimming can have more than one cause, including an overloaded circuit or a wiring problem. Note when it occurs and whether other lights or appliances are affected, but do not open a switch, fixture, or panel to investigate. Arrange an electrician’s assessment if the problem recurs, particularly if you also notice buzzing, heat, discoloration, or a burning smell.

ESFI’s Electrical Safety Dos advises: “If you see lights that flicker or dim, notice discolorations, hear buzzing, feel warm switches / outlets, or smell burning, you should hire a qualified electrician to inspect your system.”

3. Are too many devices using one outlet or circuit?

A power strip adds places to plug in; it does not increase the amount of power available from the circuit. Heat-producing and major appliances should be plugged directly into wall outlets, not extension cords or multi-outlet converters. If you depend heavily on extension cords or frequently overload outlets, ask an electrician whether additional outlets or circuits are appropriate.

  • Use extension cords only as temporary solutions, not as substitute home wiring.
  • Do not connect extension cords or multi-outlet converters to appliances that should have a direct wall connection.

These precautions align with ESFI’s overload guidance and the UK charity Electrical Safety First’s advice on overloaded sockets. The latter is UK guidance, not a statement of U.S. electrical code.

4. What should I do about a warm, discolored, buzzing, or burned-smelling outlet?

Heat, discoloration, buzzing, and burning odors can indicate overheating or wiring trouble. Stop using the outlet or switch and the equipment connected to it, and arrange inspection by a qualified electrician. Do not remove the cover to investigate while the equipment is energized. If there is smoke or active sparking, keep clear and contact emergency services as appropriate.

5. What should I do if an outlet stopped working or a GFCI tripped?

If there are no signs of heat, burning, buzzing, water intrusion, or damage, you can check whether a GFCI’s reset button has tripped and follow the labeled test and reset instructions. A GFCI interrupts power when it detects ground-fault leakage and helps reduce shock risk. ESFI recommends GFCI protection where water may contact electrical products and recommends testing protective devices monthly; follow the device’s instructions. See ESFI’s GFCI guidance.

If the GFCI fails its test, will not reset, or trips again, stop using it and call an electrician. A dead outlet or recurring trip cannot be diagnosed from the symptom alone. Do not remove the outlet or open wiring to look for a cause.

6. Why do I feel a tingle when I touch an appliance, switch, or outlet?

Treat even a mild shock or tingle as a warning. Stop using the implicated appliance or device and arrange professional assessment; do not touch it again to reproduce the fault. The cause could involve the appliance, grounding, wiring, or another fault, and a remote guide cannot determine which. ESFI’s electrical safety guidance and the CPSC’s home safety information support getting electrical concerns inspected rather than attempting a repair.

7. What if a cord, plug, receptacle, or wiring looks damaged?

Do not use a cord with cut or cracked insulation, a loose plug, or a receptacle that does not hold a plug securely. Sparks, sizzling, and buzzing also call for attention. Stop using the affected item and have wiring concerns assessed by a licensed electrician; licensing terms vary by location. The CPSC lists permanently installed extension cords and overrated panels among potential hazards in its home electrical safety guidance.

Age alone does not prove that a home’s wiring is unsafe. An inspection can be sensible in an older home or after major electrical changes, especially if you notice warning signs, but the condition of the system must be assessed rather than inferred from age.

When should I call an electrician?

Call a qualified electrician when a breaker trips again after one reset, a warning sign recurs, a GFCI fails or will not stay reset, you feel a shock or tingle, or you suspect damaged wiring. Stop using the affected circuit, outlet, or appliance when there is heat, burning odor, buzzing, discoloration, sparks, or shock. Do not open energized equipment or bypass a protective device. Local electrical rules and licensing requirements vary, so use a professional authorized in your area.

The scale of the risk is not limited to an occasional nuisance: ESFI’s FAQ reports an average of 31,647 U.S. home fires per year attributed to electrical distribution or lighting equipment during 2011–2023, along with annual averages of 425 deaths, 1,279 injuries, and $1.6 billion in direct property loss for that same period. These figures refer specifically to that equipment attribution, not all electrical incidents. See ESFI’s home electrical safety FAQ.
