Wall shelves free floor space; freestanding stands can be moved or arranged around a room; seed-starting shelves need room for lights, seedlings and airflow. The seven designs below show the trade-offs—and where the available plan details do and do not support exact measurements.
Choose a design that fits your plants and room
Before buying lumber or cutting boards, measure the available floor or wall space, each pot’s diameter, and the height of the tallest plant. Leave room above foliage and between tiers so plants are accessible and do not press against a shelf. Display shelving and seed-starting furniture have different needs: active growing may require a light source and extra vertical clearance.
Use the selected plan’s own dimensions, cut list and fasteners. Several Kreg designs below are identified in its plan collection, but their full construction details were not available to verify here; treat those as design directions and consult the linked plan before cutting. No general load rating is established for these decorative designs.
1. Wall-mounted plant shelves
Best for: displaying a few plants while keeping the floor clear. Bunnings’ Australian guide specifies three 1200 mm-long DAR pine boards, with two 200 x 250 x 25 mm brackets per shelf. The shelves attach to the wall, so their usable length and depth depend on the plan and the space available; measure your pots before committing to the layout.

The guide calls for locating studs, leveling bracket positions and pre-drilling. Where studs are not available, it says to use hollow-wall anchors. Wall construction and fastener terminology vary by region, so select fasteners suited to your wall and the expected load, and follow the fastener manufacturer’s instructions. 2. Freestanding multi-tier display shelf
Best for: grouping several potted plants, with the flexibility of a freestanding display. Kreg’s DIY plant shelf search excerpt describes a slatted unit for potted and hanging plants, using 2×2 and 1×2 boards, a dowel and pocket-hole screws. It lists a saw, drill, sander and pocket-hole jig among the tools.
Exact dimensions, tier spacing and load capacity are not established here. Check the linked plan for the complete cut list and assembly details before buying materials. Slatted shelves can let light through to lower plants, but assess the actual light available in your room and the mature height of plants on each tier. Browse Kreg’s plant-shelf plans.

3. Compact two-board shelf
Best for: a small display where you want to adjust the shelf count or size to suit a particular wall or nook. Kreg describes its two-board shelf as an easy, customizable plan, with the number and size of shelves open to adjustment. It is a wall-shelf concept, so plan for appropriate wall attachment rather than assuming the boards alone determine stability.

The available plan description does not establish fixed dimensions or pot capacity. Use the full plan for construction details, then size the shelves to the pots and wall space you have. Find the two-board shelf in Kreg’s plan collection.
4. Narrow vertical plant tower
Best for: making use of a slim footprint when floor space is limited. Kreg’s collection lists plant-stand towers among its easy plans. A vertical form can display plants at different heights without spreading broadly across the room, but it also makes tier spacing and stability important: check that each plant fits without crowding the one above it.

5. Corner or tiered stand
Best for: filling an otherwise unused corner or arranging plants at staggered heights. Kreg’s collection includes tiered corner plant-stand towers and other tiered forms. A corner-specific design may fit a room more neatly than a straight shelf, while a staggered arrangement can reduce how much one pot shades another.

These are distinct geometries, not one universal set of dimensions. Check the chosen plan for its footprint, shelf shape and assembly details; do not assume a corner unit will be stable simply because it sits in a corner. 6. Pedestal stand for one larger pot
Best for: giving one substantial plant a dedicated position rather than building a multi-pot display. Kreg’s plant-stand plan excerpt says its high and low versions are sized for a pot 12 inches in diameter. That pot-size claim is specific to the plan excerpt; check the full plan and measure your pot before cutting.
The excerpt mentions cut-list details for both variants, but the full page was not accessible to verify the measurements or assembly steps. Use the linked plan for those details, and do not infer a load rating from the stated pot diameter. Locate Kreg’s plant-stand plan.

Best for: starting seedlings or growing plants under controlled light, rather than simply displaying mature houseplants. The Home Depot’s guide, updated September 7, 2023, describes an intermediate project built from untreated 2×4 lumber. Its example unit is 50 inches high x 24 inches wide x 18 inches deep, with shelves 24 inches apart to make room for a grow light, containers and seedling growth. Slats have gaps to improve airflow.

The guide suggests placing the unit by a window receiving at least four hours of sun per day or using a grow light. Those recommendations apply to this seed-starting project, not to every houseplant. Plan the build before you cut
Match dimensions to the use
- For a display, measure pot diameter and plant height, then check shelf depth and vertical clearance.
- For a growing station, include space for lights, containers and airflow; the Home Depot example provides 24 inches between shelves.
- For a wall-mounted design, mark the full layout and confirm the wall can take the intended fasteners.
Use the right tools and protection
Tool needs depend on the plan. Bunnings lists a combination square, drill/driver, tape measure, pencil, spirit level, earmuffs, safety glasses, ventilator mask and gloves for its shelf project. Kreg’s shelf excerpt lists a saw, drill, sander and pocket-hole jig. Do not assume every project needs every tool; use the chosen plan’s shopping list and follow tool and PPE manufacturers’ instructions.
Attach and load shelves responsibly
For wall shelves, locate studs or select wall anchors rated for the wall and expected load, and level the brackets before fastening. For freestanding designs, follow the plan’s assembly and stability instructions. The reviewed decorative-shelf and stand descriptions do not establish load limits, so do not overload them or climb on them.
Missouri Botanical Garden describes a separate light stand that is 78 inches high, has six 18 x 48-inch shelves and states a maximum capacity of 350 pounds. Check older renovation hazards where relevant
Bunnings’ Australian guidance flags hazards including asbestos, lead paint and CCA-treated timber in older renovation contexts. If you are working in an older home, follow applicable local health guidance before drilling, sanding or disturbing existing materials; the Australian guidance is not a substitute for rules in other locations.
