Open Doors gives people a free, behind-the-scenes look at construction workplaces across the UK. The next edition is scheduled for March 2027, with bookings due to open on 11 January. For employers, it is an opportunity to introduce potential entrants to the people, skills and career routes behind construction; for visitors, it is a way to explore the work before choosing a route in.
What is Open Doors?
Open Doors is Build UK’s UK-wide construction careers initiative, delivered in partnership with CITB and CSCS. Participating organizations welcome visitors to workplaces they would not usually be able to access, helping make the range of construction work and routes into it more visible. The initiative is intended to encourage interest in careers; a visit is an introduction, not a qualification or a job offer.
Visits can take place at live construction sites, offices, training centres, manufacturing facilities and depots. Depending on the host, visitors may see work in progress, meet staff in different roles, ask questions or try an interactive activity such as a simulator or virtual-reality experience. The format and access rules vary by event.
When can you book a visit?
The next Open Doors programme is scheduled throughout March 2027. The official visitor page lists 11 January 2027 as the booking opening date. Event listings may be added until 12 February 2027, so check the official Open Doors event map and homepage for current listings and availability.

Use each event profile to confirm the address, age rules, duration, places available and booking instructions. Do not assume that every host offers the same experience or admits the same age groups.
What does a visit cost, and what should you wear?
There is no Open Doors admission charge, but visitors pay their own travel and incidental costs. Wear sensible shoes and comfortable clothing; waterproof clothing is recommended. If a visit requires personal protective equipment, the host supplies it, so visitors do not need to buy specialist site PPE.

What can visitors learn about construction careers?
A useful visit shows more than the physical work on a site. Construction includes design, engineering, planning and archaeology as well as building and installation. Talking to employees can help visitors understand what different roles involve, how people entered them and what qualifications or experience may be needed.

The Open Doors careers page points to Go Construct role descriptions, case studies and career matching; Build UK route guides, including guidance for England and Scotland; CITB apprenticeship information; and CSCS information on qualifications and cards. Look for relevant work experience or apprenticeship opportunities and verify the entry requirements for the specific job.
What the visitor figures do—and do not—show
Open Doors’ 2026 review reported 240 events across the UK and more than 6,500 visitors, including students, careers advisers and career changers. In its visitor survey, 96% rated their visit excellent or good, 81% said they were more likely to consider a construction career, and 97% were likely or very likely to recommend a visit. These are organizer-reported attendance and survey results, not an independent evaluation of whether visits lead to long-term recruitment or employment.

The figures should not be treated as a direct year-on-year trend without comparable survey methods and sample details. CITB reported that Open Doors 2025 drew more than 7,000 visitors across over 260 events, and that 88% of respondents said they were more likely to consider a construction career. Those are figures for the 2025 edition, distinct from the 2026 review.
The wider workforce context helps explain why introducing people to the sector matters, but it is not evidence of Open Doors’ employment impact. CITB’s 2026 Construction Workforce Outlook forecast that the UK would need over 47,000 additional construction workers each year by 2029. This is a workforce-needs forecast, not a count of current vacancies.

How employers can make a visit worthwhile
Hosting is more than showing visitors around. Organizations need to plan safe access and provide clear joining instructions. Build UK’s host guidance calls for suitable insurance, a risk assessment and method statement, any required PPE, and a pre-entry briefing on hazards, controls and emergency procedures. Visit length and group size should suit the venue and its safety assessment.
A good programme can explain the work carried out at that location, introduce employees from different roles and leave time for questions. Hosts can also share follow-up career information or offer interactive demonstrations where these can be managed safely. Open Doors gives employers a structured opportunity to show potential entrants what the industry does; the visitor figures indicate interest and satisfaction, not guaranteed recruitment outcomes.
Why the initiative matters to employers and visitors
For employers, opening a workplace can make less visible roles and career routes tangible to people who might not otherwise consider construction. For visitors, seeing a real workplace and speaking to its workforce can turn a broad impression of the industry into more specific questions about jobs, skills and training. As Deb Madden, CITB’s Executive Director for Customer Engagement and Operations, said in January 2026, Open Doors “showcases the wide range of skills and opportunities on offer in construction.”
Build UK’s Open Doors Project Manager Tamsin Parkes described the value of meeting people at work and seeing the industry in action. Whether a visit changes someone’s career plans is a longer-term question; the available event results report visitor responses, not subsequent employment outcomes.
