What is being built at the Stark County Jail?
The county broke ground on the addition on August 15, 2025. The planned project adds 312 beds, including 144 designated for mental-health needs, according to Ideastream Public Media’s 2025 report. Welty, the contractor, describes the work as an 84,808-square-foot renovation and expansion designed to replace outdated cellblocks with pod-style housing.
Project plans also include a renovated clinic, expanded kitchen, and additional medium- and maximum-security beds. Welty identifies K2M Design as the architect. Its project page lists 24 acute-need mental-health beds and 144 regular mental-health beds; those categories should not be added together to claim a total beyond the county-reported 144 without clarification.
How the new housing differs from the old layout
Ideastream described the existing jail’s linear housing as cells arranged along long hallways. Sheriff Eric Weisburn said parts of the current facility date to the 1960s. The planned pod-style arrangement is intended to replace that layout. County officials and project proponents have presented the design as a way to improve safety and operations, but published coverage does not provide independent outcome measurements demonstrating those effects.

Construction progress and expected opening
In the latest located progress update, News-Talk 1480 WHBC reported on September 18, 2026, that the project was 40% complete and exterior veneer was being installed. The report also cited 76,697 labor hours as of that week; this was a contractor-reported progress figure, not an independently audited count. The four-story facility is expected to open in January 2028.
Published project cost and funding figures
Reported totals vary by date and scope, so construction price and total project cost should not be treated as interchangeable. The September 18, 2026 WHBC update described the project as costing $77 million. Earlier, the Canton Repository reported a guaranteed maximum construction price of $66,539,278 and a total project cost of $75,741,888, including soft costs such as design.

At groundbreaking, the county said it planned to use $35 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds and revenue accumulated through a 0.5% criminal-justice sales tax. WHBC later reported that the project received an additional $7.5 million in state jail renovation and construction funding in November 2025. These reports do not establish a final funding accounting.
