What is happening, and when?
The township says construction efforts are expected to start in mid-October. Work is scheduled to begin no earlier than 7:30 a.m. on weekdays, with Saturdays permitted if needed. The October 1 pre-construction meeting was a project milestone, while the September event was a ceremonial groundbreaking. Neither confirms that crews have begun physical work. The township’s September 24 update and its project page describe the schedule and target reopening.
What does the renovation include?
The project covers renovation and a small addition to the existing one-story center, related site work, and full replacement of the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems. The township’s invitation to bid divided the work into four prime contracts: general construction, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical.

Why is the work needed?
Cheltenham Township says deteriorating infrastructure, inoperable mechanical systems, and inability to meet current building-code and federal ADA requirements had limited the center’s ability to serve the public. The stated goal is to restore year-round educational, recreational, and social programming in a safe, modern community space that also highlights local arts, culture, and history.
What is the reported project cost and funding?
The township reported a total project cost of $8,806,185 in 2026. It also listed four grants totaling $5,204,730. That total is the arithmetic sum of the grant amounts below; the township’s September release does not detail the remainder of the project financing, so the listed grants should not be read as the only funding.

What will the center offer, and what is its history?
The township lists the facility at Willow and Sycamore Avenues in La Mott, Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania. Its facility listing describes an indoor basketball court, playground, playing field, supervised summer recess program, and indoor recreation and education programs.
The site was once Camp William Penn during the Civil War and was known as “Camptown.” The town was later renamed La Mott in honor of abolitionist Lucretia Mott. La Mott Grammar School was built in 1879, closed in 1940, and reopened as a community center in 1941, according to the township’s community-center history.
