The WOOD Magazine salad tongs plan describes a two-piece wooden server whose halves spring apart during use and fold flat for storage. The project uses a microwave to curve the sprung ends, but the available plan-page description does not explain how to do that safely or provide the full build steps. Check the plan itself for its procedure, dimensions, and finish guidance before cutting or shaping stock.
What the WOOD Magazine plan describes
WOOD Magazine says the tongs’ two halves spring apart when used and fold flat for storage. It identifies the project as having appeared in WOOD issue 161, February/March 2005; the downloadable plan page was published March 31, 2020. View the WOOD Magazine plan page.
The page mentions using a microwave to curve the sprung ends but does not give the method or safety details in its available description. Do not infer a heating time, moisture condition, or handling procedure from that brief description; follow the complete plan’s instructions. The page excerpt also does not establish the design’s dimensions or name a specific finish.

Choosing wood and finish for a food-use utensil
Wood recommendations differ between sources and designs. The WoodworkersWorkshop listing favors white oak, while Woodcraft advises close-grained, moderately dense woods such as cherry and maple, or fruitwoods, for utensils; it cautions against open-pored oak and mahogany. Those are source-specific recommendations, not a universal rule for every tong design. Check the selected plan’s material guidance before choosing stock. Read Woodcraft’s utensil guidance.

Woodcraft describes mineral oil as an optional finish for wooden utensils. The WOOD Magazine plan-page description says finishing guidelines are included but does not identify its finish, so do not assume mineral oil is specified or required by that plan. Follow its actual finish instructions and verify that any product you choose is labeled for its intended use.

Other published tong projects use different designs and should not be substituted for the WOOD Magazine plan’s measurements or steps. A Woodworkers Institute bent-wood project, for example, specifies stock measuring 535 x 38 x 6 mm and lists a rip saw, bandsaw or tablesaw, drill with a 1 mm bit, and smoothing plane. Those measurements and tools belong to that separate project, not the WOOD Magazine design. See the Woodworkers Institute project.

Before you start
- Obtain and read the complete instructions for the exact plan you will build; the short description does not provide dimensions or the full shaping procedure.
- Use the selected plan—not a separate project listing—to confirm stock, tools, shaping sequence, and finish.
- If using a design that curves wood in a microwave, follow that plan’s specific procedure and safety instructions rather than improvising from the brief description.
- Choose cutting equipment only after checking the plan. One separate listing names a bandsaw or scroll saw as alternatives among several tools; neither should be assumed necessary for every salad-tongs plan.
