Montclair State University opened a 2,450-square-foot virtual reality learning lab in September 2026, built with Dreamscape Learn in the university’s College of Communication and Media building. The facility combines a 26-seat classroom with a free-roam pod, and the university says it will serve more than 24,000 students.
How the lab is laid out
The facility pairs two settings: a conventional classroom for seated instruction and a free-roam pod where students can move through virtual environments. Montclair’s project documents describe a purpose-built installation coordinated with Dreamscape Learn, including supporting infrastructure such as a server room. The opening announcement and project manual do not identify a retail headset model or confirm compatibility with consumer VR equipment.
The university says the design combines student-centered learning with 360-degree motion capture and haptic feedback—physical stimuli such as vibration or movement. In practical terms, the classroom supports group teaching while the pod provides a space for immersive activity.
What students will do in the first course
Biology in the Alien Zoo
The first announced course is Dreamscape Learn’s “Biology in the Alien Zoo.” Students work as a team in a virtual alien ecosystem, conduct fieldwork, collect and analyze data, and apply scientific concepts while trying to save an alien species from extinction. The experience is designed around course content rather than being a general-purpose VR demonstration.

Skills beyond course participation
Montclair says students will also have opportunities to build practical skills in storyboarding, design, coding, and operating virtual environments. Those are stated educational aims; the university has not reported enrollment figures or measured outcomes for the new lab.
Dreamscape Learn’s role and project funding
Dreamscape Learn is the university’s learning-experience partner. Montclair describes its approach as blending storytelling, VR, motion capture, haptics, and research-backed pedagogy. The opening announcement presents the collaboration as curriculum integrated with immersive experiences, not simply the purchase of standalone VR equipment.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
A 2023 university board agenda provides historical procurement context: it says Montclair evaluated potential VR firms and identified Dreamscape Learn as meeting its stated needs for haptic-enabled, curriculum-integrated experiences and operational and technology support. The agenda contemplated licensing, maintenance, Canvas learning-system integration, and deployment work at that time; it does not establish current contract terms or price. The university’s 2024 project manual and 2026 opening announcement likewise point to a tailored institutional facility, without specifying consumer hardware models.
The project received partial funding through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority’s New Jersey Film Works Grant Program. Montclair has said it intends to expand coursework over time and make the space available across majors; that is a plan, not confirmation that every program currently uses the facility.

What is known about learning outcomes
Montclair’s announcement cites a comparison involving Arizona State University biology students, who it says were nearly two times more likely to earn an A in lab assignments than students in regular course sections. The announcement does not provide the sample size or study details. That comparison is not an evaluation of Montclair’s new lab and does not establish that the facility causes better results. No independent evaluation results for the Montclair installation are provided in the opening materials.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the facility matters to construction and campus planning
The lab illustrates how immersive-learning projects can extend beyond a room fitted with VR devices. Its documented scope includes separate teaching and free-roam spaces, coordination with a learning platform, and supporting infrastructure. For campus planners, the distinction matters: a curriculum-integrated installation involves room design and operational support as well as the virtual experience itself. The available project materials establish that tailored approach, but do not disclose equipment specifications or detailed construction costs.
