There is no single glue that works best on every fabric. For many ordinary fabric repairs and embellishments, start with a permanent fabric adhesive; choose a stretch-formulated glue for knits or dancewear, a heavy-duty adhesive for materials listed on its label, and a fray-control product for loose edges. The right choice depends on the textile, the job, the finish you can accept, and how the item will be cleaned.
Choose glue by fabric and project
Check the exact product’s listed materials and care directions rather than choosing by “strongest” alone. Manufacturer recommendations distinguish several common jobs, but they are not independent head-to-head tests.
| Project or fabric | Starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| General fabric-to-fabric repair or embellishment | Permanent fabric adhesive or Fabric Fusion, if the product lists the materials. Aleene’s FAQ; Permanent Fabric Glue; Fabric Fusion | Test for visible soak-through and follow that formula’s curing and wash directions. |
| Knits, dancewear, or other stretchy material | A stretch-formulated fabric glue. Aleene’s Flexible Stretchable Fabric Glue | Follow the product’s instruction to stretch the fabric during application; test the bond and appearance first. |
| Denim, canvas, leather, satin, or heavier embellishments | A heavy-duty fabric adhesive only where its product page lists the material. Aleene’s Super Fabric Adhesive | Use it in a well-ventilated area and allow the stated time before laundering. |
| Frayed edge, hem, seam, ribbon, trim, cording, or braid | An adhesive made for fray control and edge sealing. Aleene’s Stop Fraying | The manufacturer says this product is not dry-cleanable and advises waiting 7–10 days before washing. |
| Delicate, lightweight, dark, or prominent fabric | Test the exact glue in an inconspicuous spot before using it on the visible area. Aleene’s FAQ | Glue may soak through or change the appearance; lightweight fabric can darken, and some solvent-based products may affect dye. |
| Vinyl or fabric bonded to vinyl | Do not assume ordinary fabric glue is compatible. Aleene’s FAQ | The manufacturer describes vinyl as difficult and warns that a bond may peel; use a specifically compatible product and test it. |
When comparing products, consider material compatibility, dried flexibility, visibility, cleanup, curing time, laundering directions, and whether the bond needs to resist water. A strong bond is not automatically the best choice for a wearable item.
Check whether the item can be washed—and when
“Washable” does not mean ready for the washing machine as soon as the glue feels dry. Waiting periods and care instructions differ even among products from the same manufacturer. Follow the current package directions for the exact formula; examples below show why the label matters.

Apply carefully to avoid a visible or weak repair
Test a small, hidden area first, especially on delicate, dark, or lightweight textiles. The test can reveal changes in color or finish and whether glue shows through. Check the product label for preparation, application, and pressing instructions.

- Permanent Fabric Adhesive – Creates a strong, permanent bond on fabrics without sewing or heat setting. Dries flexible for comfortable wear. Perfect for hems, repairs, attaching embellishments, and fabric crafts.
- Works Best on Cotton, Denim & Flannel – Specifically designed for natural woven fabrics like cotton, denim, flannel, silk, nylon, and trims. NOT recommended for stretchy fabrics (spandex, jersey, knits), patches, heavy synthetics, or felt. Use extra tape layers when working with heavier woven materials.
- Air Dry Application, No Heat or Weight Required – Apply glue and allow to air dry only. Do not clamp, press, or weight items while drying, as this can prevent proper curing. Dry time is approximately 2–4 hours depending on thickness.
- Permanent & Machine Washable After Curing – Once fully cured (allow 48 hours), adhesive creates a flexible, permanent bond that does not wash out. Holds through machine washing in cold water. Dries clear and flexible.
- Mid-Size Bottle for Versatility – 4 oz provides enough adhesive for multiple projects without taking up too much space. Great for home repairs, costume making, and regular fabric crafting needs.

Understand water resistance, cleanup, and safety
Water-resistant is not waterproof
Aleene’s says its permanent fabric glues are water-resistant, not waterproof; its temporary adhesives are designed to wash out, and temporary-hold products are not machine washable. Aleene’s FAQ Do not rely on fabric glue for an item that needs a waterproof bond unless the specific product says it is suitable for that use.

Clean spills while the glue is wet
Cleanup depends on the formula. Aleene’s FAQ says wet water-based glue can be rinsed or washed out, while wet solvent-based glue may require a solvent such as acetone. Test the cleanup method on an inconspicuous spot first. Some dried glue may soften with acetone, but the FAQ does not promise complete removal; attempting cleanup can also damage fabric. Aleene’s FAQ
Follow the product’s safety information
Aleene’s characterizes specified water-based fabric glues as lower-toxicity and nonflammable compared with solvent-based products. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent safety assessment. Use the current label and safety documentation for the exact product, and ventilate the work area when directed.

Can fabric glue replace sewing?
Fabric glue can be useful for repairs and embellishments when the adhesive is compatible with the material and the garment’s care needs. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish that glue can replace sewing for every seam, load, or fabric. For a project where a failure could matter, or where the item will face substantial strain or repeated laundering, do not assume an adhesive bond is equivalent to stitching; follow the product’s stated use and consider whether sewing is the more suitable construction method.

It can help identify intended materials, application steps, and care directions, but it does not establish a universal winner or provide independent comparative performance results.
