3D-printed lace fabric is not one standardized material. The term can describe a freestanding openwork print, a printed motif bonded to conventional fabric, or a lace-inspired structure made through digital fabrication. The clearest documented fabric example is a flexible TPU pattern printed directly onto polyester voile: a composite, not conventional lace made by a different machine.
What counts as 3D-printed lace fabric?
The phrase covers related but distinct approaches. In one, a printer creates an openwork textile-like structure. In another, it deposits a pattern onto a separate textile substrate. A third approach uses lace-making principles to inform a digital design or fabrication process, without necessarily producing a garment fabric comparable to traditional lace.
That distinction matters when comparing strength, drape, feel, or care. Results for a TPU-and-voile composite do not automatically apply to a freestanding print, an auxetic structure, or a bio-composite design inspired by bobbin lace.
How the documented TPU-and-voile composite is made
In Sunhee Lee’s 2018 study, lace-type models of different thicknesses were converted to G-code and printed using fused deposition modeling (FDM). Flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) filament was deposited directly onto polyester voile. The reported settings were a nozzle speed of 50 mm/s, nozzle temperature of 235°C, and heated-bed temperature of 40°C. These are the conditions used in that study, not general-purpose settings for every printer, TPU filament, or textile.

The resulting material combines printed polymer with a woven fabric base. Its behavior depends on more than the appearance of the motif: the substrate, pattern geometry, print thickness, and processing all contribute. Sunhee Lee’s 2019 study specifically varied lace motif size and roller-press processing, and found that those choices affected tensile behavior and stiffness.
What mechanical results have been reported?
Lee’s 2019 measurements are sample-specific rather than product specifications. They illustrate why it is important to identify whether a result refers to a printed structure alone or to a processed composite.

The study found that motif size and roller processing influenced stiffness and tensile response. These figures do not establish that a larger motif or roller-pressed design is always stronger, more flexible, or more comfortable; those outcomes depend on the specific construction and test.
Separate evidence gives a broader sense of what FDM textile-like structures can do, but should not be mistaken for a lace result. In a 2024 study of 15 FDM-printed structures made with flexible TPU, the strongest tested structure withstood up to 460 N in a ball-burst test. That figure applies to the strongest structure in that study, not to lace fabric generally.

Hand, care and possible garment uses
Lee’s 2018 study measured fabric hand using KOSHI, NUMERI, and FUKURAMI values. Increasing print thickness increased the measured values. Based on the primary hand-value results, the authors considered the tested composites applicable to women’s summer garments. This is a study conclusion about those samples, not evidence that every printed lace composite will feel or perform suitably in clothing.
The same study reported grades of 4–5 for all tested samples in its washing-fastness and dry-cleaning-resistance tests. Those grades describe the samples and test conditions in that work; they are not a universal care rating for TPU prints, other substrates, or finished garments. Care instructions for a particular fabric would need to be established for that specific construction.

Other studies demonstrate design exploration rather than broad commercial availability. A 2022 fashion-design paper proposed customized garments combining 3D printing and lace techniques; its process included testing 12 lace-bottom designs, three motifs, and two fastening types. A 2025 study examined the drapability of 3D-printed auxetic structures for wearable products and compared printed samples with traditional lace fabrics. Auxetic structures are a related textile research direction, not necessarily the same TPU-on-voile material.

Some work draws on the logic of lace-making without focusing on apparel fabric. The 2021 paper “Tailored Lace” describes a computational design and fabrication workflow for 3D bio-composite structures informed by bobbin-lace techniques and structural criteria. It is a research direction, not evidence of a commercially available clothing material.

In a report published on 25 September 2026, Aalto University described researchers combining bobbin-lace techniques, active materials, and computer modeling to create textile structures that can change shape in response to environmental changes such as temperature. This is lace-making-inspired active textile research, distinct from FDM printing TPU onto voile.
What to check when comparing a design or planning a prototype
For a meaningful comparison, first identify whether the design is a substrate composite or a freestanding printed structure. Then compare like with like on the points the studies show can affect performance:
- Material and process: distinguish TPU FDM from other materials or fabrication methods.
- Geometry and thickness: motif size and print thickness can influence mechanical behavior and measured hand.
- Processing: roller pressing affected stiffness and tensile response in Lee’s 2019 samples.
- Test type: tensile measurements, ball-burst strength, drapability, and care tests measure different properties and cannot be treated as interchangeable.
- Intended use: a wearable concept or favorable laboratory result does not by itself establish long-term wear, comfort, production economics, or market availability.
For hands-on prototyping, TPU filament is the clearest physical-product connection in the cited work. The studies do not recommend a retail filament brand or specific printer model. A printer must be compatible with flexible filament, and settings should be determined for the actual filament, substrate, and machine rather than copied uncritically from a paper.
