To handcut a tenon, mark its shoulders and cheeks from the actual mortise or chosen dimensions, saw the shoulders to their layout lines, then rip the cheeks and pare the fit with a sharp chisel. Work to the marks rather than aiming for a supposedly universal tenon size: the fit depends on the mortise and the stock.

Tools and setup

Gather a square, marking gauge, a suitable saw, a sharp chisel and clamps. A tenon saw or backsaw offers control for the shoulder and cheek cuts, but check that its blade reaches the full depth of the cheek. If the tenon is too deep for a backed blade, an unbacked Japanese-style ryoba with a rip edge is one alternative. Canadian Woodworking discusses this depth limitation and option in its hand-cut mortise-and-tenon guide.

Secure the work so it cannot shift while sawing or paring. Keep the waste side of each line clear in your mind: the goal is to remove waste without crossing the boundary that defines the tenon.

Mark the tenon

  1. Use a square to mark the shoulder position across the face, then carry the line around the stock so the shoulder is defined on all sides.
  2. Set a marking gauge from the mortise width or the tenon dimensions you have chosen. Scribe the cheek lines on both sides of the stock.
  3. Make the shoulder boundary easy to see. A crisp scribed line or a shallow knife wall gives the saw and chisel a clear stopping point.

Common Woodworking’s tenon-cutting sequence emphasizes using the gauge and knife marks as boundaries. Do not rely on a general proportion as a substitute for laying out the joint you are actually making.

Saw the shoulders

Clamp the work securely and saw each shoulder on the waste side, stopping at the marked boundary. Keep the saw aligned with the layout and avoid cutting beyond the gauge line; removing material past it changes the tenon and can leave a gap at the joint. Repeat for the other shoulders required by the shape of the tenon. Common Woodworking likewise cautions against sawing past the gauge line.

Saw the cheeks

Orient the stock to make a controlled rip cut along the cheek layout. Begin square across the end to establish the cut, then follow the scribed lines toward the shoulders. Saw from both sides to help keep the two cuts aligned and the cheek surfaces consistent, as advised by Common Woodworking.

Before starting, compare the depth of the cut with the usable blade depth. A backed saw’s spine can prevent the plate from reaching far enough on a deep tenon. If that happens, Canadian Woodworking identifies a Japanese-style ryoba as an unbacked option; use its rip edge for the cheek cut. A backed saw remains suitable when its blade can reach the cut.

Pare and fit the tenon

Sawing may leave slight ridges or high spots. Use a sharp chisel for controlled paring, removing small amounts and keeping the shoulder boundary intact. Woodcraft’s chisel guidance covers controlled chisel use; Common Woodworking describes paring away cheek undulations without cutting beyond the knife-marked shoulders.

Test the tenon in its mortise as you refine it. Remove material only where the fit shows it is needed, then test again. A shoulder plane can refine a surface, but it is optional: take light passes and check the fit frequently. Woodcraft explains the tool’s use in its shoulder-plane guide.

  • If the tenon will not enter the mortise, identify the tight area and pare that surface gradually rather than forcing the joint.
  • If a cheek has saw marks or high spots, pare them down carefully while preserving the layout and shoulder lines.
  • If the shoulder does not close against the mortise piece, inspect the shoulder cut and remove only the material preventing it from seating.

Leaving a little excess on the cheeks gives room for fitting; removing wood is easier than replacing it. The final fit should be judged against the actual mortise and workpiece, not a universal tolerance.
