Robby Cuthbert’s tensegrity furniture uses wooden members and tensioned steel cable to make the structure part of the design. His portfolio includes tables and chairs alongside lamps and sculptural works, with different pieces using different materials and forms. A documented coffee table shows how he combines laminated poplar curves, cable and a glass top to create a stand whose components appear to float apart.
What makes Cuthbert’s furniture tensegrity-inspired?
Cuthbert describes his work through the relationship between wood and wire: cables pull wooden parts together in some places and apart in others, producing a stable arrangement. That is the designer’s explanation of the concept, not an independent engineering certification or a published load test. The finished objects also suggest stored potential energy, a theme he describes as central to his sculptural practice.
In a Williams College profile, Cuthbert compared the wooden elements to muscles and explained that opposing cable forces contribute to stability. The profile presents his design rationale; it does not report structural testing. The distinction matters: a visually balanced arrangement is not, by itself, evidence of a particular load capacity or suitability for every use.

The portfolio gallery also lists materials such as birch plywood, poplar, rice paper and glass across its works. These entries show a range of material choices rather than one construction recipe. The gallery includes dimensions for many pieces, but it does not provide standardized information comparing comfort, durability, stability, load capacity or price, and a portfolio listing does not establish that a piece is currently for sale.
How did Cuthbert build the Tense Coffee Table?
In an account dated October 31, 2012, Cuthbert described developing a functional coffee table from a small prototype. Its stand is made from four laminated poplar curves held in a cable arrangement, with a glass top. His account traces the process from shaping the wood to tensioning the stand:

- Laminate and shape the curves. He cut thin poplar strips, glued and stacked them, then bent the stacks into curves and clamped them while the glue set. To make the four curves alike, he designed a mold on a computer and cut it with a CNC machine.
- Prepare the wooden parts. He sanded the curves, drilled passages for cable and applied polyurethane.
- Arrange and tension the stand. He assembled the stand in a jig, threading steel cable between the curves. Some cable lines pulled the pieces together while others pulled them apart. Crimped copper sleeves secured the cable.
- Complete the table. A glass top finished the piece. Cuthbert noted that the stand could be flipped to make the crimps less visible.
In his description, the four wooden components do not touch one another, and each meets the ground at one point. The cable connections and opposing pulls are therefore central to how this particular stand is arranged; the glass top completes the furniture form.
Read Cuthbert’s Tense Coffee Table build account for the original project description. It names a table saw, wood glue, clamps, a computer-designed and CNC-cut mold, belt and palm sanders, a drill press, polyurethane, steel cable, copper sleeves and glass. Those are the supplies and equipment he reports using for that project, not tested recommendations for reproducing it. The account does not specify cable gauge or strength rating, fitting ratings, or results from load testing, so it is not a construction specification.

How does Cuthbert approach the design process?
Cuthbert says he studied Studio Art and Psychology at Williams College and that his practice draws on architecture and sculpture. He describes a process that begins with sketching and proceeds through planning, calculation and construction. “Process is central to my work,” he says in his artist biography.
That sequence helps explain why his furniture is more than a material combination: the cable routing and wood geometry are designed as visible relationships, not merely hidden supports. Cuthbert also writes that his recent work generates architectural and organic forms, sometimes with a fantastical or whimsical quality, and examines tension’s role in storing and releasing energy.

What can and can’t be concluded from the available information?
The gallery, biography and build account document the designer’s own descriptions and listed materials. They do not establish current inventory, retail prices, engineering certification, standardized load ratings or independent structural tests. Treat the pieces as documented design work rather than assuming that a gallery entry is a current commercial product or a tested furniture specification.
A Williams College profile also recounts an early burst of attention: it says 175,000 people saw Cuthbert’s Reddit photo album within 12 hours, with 30 orders on the day it reached the top spot and more than 50 by the end of that week. The profile’s publication year is not stated, so those figures should be read as historical anecdotes, not current demand or sales information.
