Common box (Buxus sempervirens) is well suited to clipped garden art because its small leaves and dense growth make tidy geometric shapes. Plant it in autumn or spring, establish a healthy framework, then shape it gradually. In the UK, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends trimming mature box in August, once new growth has hardened; local climates may call for a different calendar.

How do I grow boxwood?

Box is an evergreen shrub with small, glossy leaves. Its compact foliage helps clipped outlines look neat, making it a traditional choice for formal shapes. The RHS says it can grow in sun or shade, but also notes that it does best in well-drained soil in partial shade. In sunny or exposed, windy positions, dry soil can increase the risk of leaf scorch. RHS growing guide

Planting in the ground

Plant in autumn or spring, when conditions are suitable for root establishment. Prepare a generous hole so the roots have room to spread, set the plant at its previous soil level, backfill, and water it in. Keep the soil from drying out while the plant establishes.

Growing box in a pot

Choose a container at least 45 cm (18 in) in diameter and use a loam-based compost, such as peat-free John Innes No. 3. A container dries out faster than garden soil, so check moisture regularly, especially in warm or windy weather. Ensure excess water can drain away.

How do I make a topiary shape?

Topiary is the training and clipping of shrubs or trees into stylized forms. Box is one traditional subject; yew, holly, privet and Lonicera nitida can also be trained. For a first attempt, choose a healthy, well-proportioned young plant with dense growth near the base as well as at the top. RHS guide to topiary

Start with a ball, pyramid or cube

Simple geometric shapes are easier to maintain than detailed designs. You can clip by eye or use a template to guide the outline. Wire frames can help with more intricate forms, but they are not necessary for a basic ball or cube. Some frames are removable; others remain around the plant and become concealed by foliage.

Use topiary shears or a hedge-cutter to maintain the outline. Work in small amounts, stepping back regularly to check the shape from different angles rather than taking off a large section at once. A compact, tightly knitted form takes time to develop and may require many years, depending on the plant and the size you want.

Training a standard or lollipop

  1. Choose a young plant with one strong, upright shoot to become the main stem.
  2. Tie that shoot loosely to a cane or stake to keep it straight.
  3. Gradually remove competing shoots from the lower stem as it grows, rather than stripping the plant all at once.
  4. When the stem reaches your chosen height, encourage growth at the top and clip it into a rounded crown.

Spring organic mulch is part of the RHS’s general advice for establishing topiary. Keep mulch clear of the stem itself.

When should I trim boxwood?

For the UK calendar, the RHS advises cutting young plants back by up to one-third in May to encourage bushier growth, then trimming as needed between May and August. For mature box, it recommends shaping in August, after new shoots have hardened and growth has slowed. Earlier clipping can stimulate soft new growth that is more vulnerable to weather damage and disease. Adjust the timing to local seasons and plant growth rather than treating these UK dates as universal. RHS growing guide

The RHS says topiary specimens are generally trimmed once or twice a year, while vigorous species may need more frequent clipping. The aim is to preserve the outline without removing so much foliage that the plant loses its shape or health.

How do I spot box blight and box tree caterpillar?

Box blight can cause bare patches, brown leaves and dieback. If you prune in more than one part of the garden, clean tools between areas with garden disinfectant or a mild bleach solution to reduce the chance of carrying disease on the blades. RHS box blight advice

Inspect box regularly for box tree caterpillars and signs of feeding damage. The RHS describes the moth as a common resident, widely distributed across England and also present in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Its published records rose from over 800 in 2015–2016 to over 3,000 in 2017, then more than 5,000 records annually since 2018. These are records reported to the RHS, not estimates of the proportion of plants affected or current annual totals. RHS box tree moth advice

What can I use instead of boxwood?

If blight, caterpillars or the upkeep of box make it impractical, consider another shrub suited to your growing conditions and intended shape. The RHS identifies yew, holly, privet and Lonicera nitida as topiary subjects. No alternative has every attribute of box, so compare how a plant responds to clipping, its growth rate, the form you want, soil drainage and local pest or disease pressures before choosing. RHS guide to topiary

Yew is a traditional option: the RHS notes that it clips neatly and regrows well when cut into old wood. The best substitute for your garden still depends on the shape you want and the conditions where it will grow. RHS advice on alternatives to box
