Either way, first check that the ball will sit securely in the holder you intend to use.

How to make a painted bowling-ball globe
- Prepare a suitable work area. Work in a well-ventilated place and read the primer and paint labels for surface preparation, application, and safety requirements. The eHow tutorial recommends primer intended for plastic; the product maker’s directions take precedence. eHow tutorial
- Apply primer. Coat the ball as directed by the primer manufacturer and allow it to dry for the specified time.
- Build the color in layers. Apply paint in coats, allowing each to dry as its label directs. Avoid putting the globe outdoors until the finish has cured as specified for that product.
- Fit the support. Set the ball in a compatible, stable stand or holder before choosing its final garden location.
How to make a mosaic bowling-ball globe
Gather project materials
Use decorative glass or tile pieces, silicone adhesive, grout, and—if appropriate for the products and exposure—tile sealer. For an outdoor project, Dee Brown of The Mosaic Store recommends a non-water-soluble silicone adhesive. Confirm on the actual package that the adhesive, grout, and any sealer are suitable for your materials and exposure, and follow their instructions for surface preparation, ventilation, cleanup, drying, and curing. Attach the pieces in sections
- Plan the bottom and holder first. Check how the ball will sit in its intended stand and leave the base in a shape that allows a secure fit. The Mosaic Store tutorial notes that roughing the ball’s surface is optional in the contributor’s experience; follow your adhesive label rather than treating that as a universal preparation rule. - Work a manageable area at a time. Apply adhesive and place tiles in sections so pieces are less likely to slide down the rounded surface. Use the adhesive’s stated application and curing directions.
- Check for sharp or unstable pieces. Remove or trim pieces that protrude sharply or rock. Wear suitable eye and hand protection when cutting or handling tile, and follow any safety directions supplied with your tools and materials.
- Let the adhesive dry before grouting. The Mosaic Store contributor describes leaving the adhesive overnight, but the adhesive package’s cure instructions determine when your project is ready for the next step.
- Grout and finish. Fill the gaps with grout according to its package directions. Consider a compatible tile sealer for outdoor exposure, following its label for application and curing before placing the globe outside.
Place the globe with reflection and stability in mind
The Mosaic Store project reports a fire after sunlight reflected from a mirror-decorated ball, but the page does not identify the person or provide an independent investigation or measured risk. Treat it as a reported safety concern, not proof that every mirror globe will cause a fire. Avoid exposed mirror surfaces outdoors or choose a placement where reflected sunlight will not be concentrated near combustible materials; the project contributor advises against outdoor mirrors. Bowling balls are heavy, so select a sturdy holder that fits the finished globe. For a yard display on a pedestal, Mayco’s ceramic project suggests staking it with a rod or filling the base with sand and sealing it; those are recommendations for that project, not universal specifications for every stand.
