You can repair a concrete block wall yourself only when the wall is stable and the damage is limited to deteriorated mortar joints. Cracks through blocks, widening cracks, displacement, bulging, or leaning need assessment before any patching. First identify the defect and address its cause; cosmetic work should come after structural repairs.
Identify what is damaged before repairing it
Concrete block walls can have failed mortar joints, cracks in joints or blocks, displaced courses, surface spalls, or moisture-related deposits. These conditions call for different repairs. Check whether a crack is confined to the mortar or crosses a block, whether its edges are displaced, and whether it is widening or recurring. Also look for bulging, leaning, loose units, exposed reinforcement, and signs of water entry.
Efflorescence—white, powdery salt deposits—can indicate moisture moving through masonry. Inspect nearby gutters, downspouts, copings, joints, and other possible water pathways. Correct a continuing water source or movement problem rather than covering its symptoms.
The National Park Service’s guidance for brick masonry states that “Structural repairs precede minor or cosmetic repairs.” That principle applies here: do not use a surface patch or new mortar to disguise possible structural movement. National Park Service: Common Problems with Brick Masonry.
#1 Best Overall
- FOR EASY REPAIRS — It's the ideal concrete patch repair mix, neatly fixing cracks and spalls so your property looks like new. It's even textured for a more seamless blend with the existing structure
- TOUGH AND DURABLE — Formulated to avoid shrinking or cracking, the ready-to-use premixed cement patch offers good adhesion and high strength so your slabs, walls & walkways/sidewalks perform as good as ever
- EASY CLEANUP — Sika concrete patch is acrylic-based, so once application is done, it cleans up using only water. No need for special cleaners and chemicals
- GREEN — It follows regulations concerning the use of volatile organic compounds (VOC), helping to keep the air we breathe cleaner and fresher
- A BREEZE TO USE — Minimal prep is required, since it comes premixed. Just use a putty or trowel to spread where repairs are needed. It takes only a few hours to set and about a day for a full cure
Choose the right repair path
| What you see | Appropriate next step |
|---|---|
| Localized loose or deteriorated mortar in a stable wall | Repoint the affected joint with mortar compatible with the existing masonry. Avoid removing sound material merely to enlarge a cosmetic patch. U.S. Navy maintenance reference. |
| Crack through a block, widening or recurring crack, displacement, bulge, or lean | Have a qualified masonry or structural professional assess the cause and specify repairs. Surface mortar is not a structural fix. |
| Small concrete surface spall | Evaluate it separately from a mortar joint; a concrete patching procedure may be appropriate after the substrate is assessed. GSA’s procedure requires a sound, clean substrate for its concrete patching compound. GSA concrete patching procedure. |
| White deposits, staining, or recurring dampness | Find and address the moisture source. Cleaning deposits alone will not prevent them from returning if water continues to enter. |
| Damage associated with an earthquake | Arrange a qualified engineering or masonry assessment. FEMA’s guidance addresses repair and upgrades for earthquake-damaged buildings, not a homeowner patch recipe. FEMA 308. |
How to repoint a localized mortar joint
Use this process only if the wall is stable and deterioration is limited to mortar. If removing mortar could destabilize the wall, the damage is extensive, or you find any sign of movement, stop and seek qualified help.
1. Confirm the cause and mark the repair area
Inspect the full area around the defect, not just the visible gap. Check for cracks through blocks, displacement, repeated cracking, bulging, and water entry. Resolve an ongoing moisture source before repointing; new mortar will not stop water entering elsewhere or correct movement.
2. Remove failed mortar carefully
With appropriately sized hand tools, remove loose or failed mortar until you reach sound material, taking care not to chip block edges. Make a clean, square back to the prepared joint. GSA’s preservation procedure gives removal guidance for historic masonry, but its specific dimensions are not universal requirements for every modern concrete masonry unit wall. The procedure also cautions against removing mortar so deeply that wall stability is compromised. GSA: Repointing Mortar Joints in Historic Masonry Buildings.
3. Clean and prepare the joint
Remove dust and loose debris from the prepared joint. The Navy maintenance reference calls for cleaning and dampening the joint before placing mortar. Follow the current instructions for your selected mortar for substrate moisture, weather, and application conditions; those directions govern that product.

4. Select compatible mortar
Choose mortar to suit the existing wall and mortar, considering hardness, permeability, exposure, and appearance. There is no single generic mix that is right for every block wall. For historic masonry in particular, GSA warns that a mortar harder than the masonry or original mortar can create stresses during thermal expansion and contraction, damaging the masonry units instead of the mortar. Its lime-mortar guidance concerns historic masonry and should not be treated as a universal formula for modern concrete block. GSA: Preparing Lime Mortar for Repointing Masonry.
5. Pack and tool the joint
Press mortar firmly into the prepared joint in workable layers, filling it tightly rather than leaving voids. Tool the surface to match the existing joint profile and avoid smearing mortar over the block face. The Navy reference describes compact, concave tooling as a general repair approach.

- A sanded acrylic formula
- Adheres to brick block stone and concrete surfaces
- Texture and color blends with the surrounding mortar
6. Protect the repair while it cures
Follow the mortar manufacturer’s current instructions for curing, temperature, and moisture protection. GSA’s historic-masonry procedure specifies keeping its repointing mortar damp for at least 72 consecutive hours; that is a project-specific preservation specification, not a universal instruction for all repair mortars.
7. Reinspect the wall
Check for renewed cracking, separation, water entry, or movement. If the defect returns, the cause may remain unresolved and the wall should be assessed by a qualified professional.

Safety and when to stop
- Follow the mortar and tool labels, and use suitable protection when handling tools and managing dust and debris.
- Do not continue if mortar removal could affect wall stability, or if units are loose or displaced.
- Get qualified help for extensive damage, historic masonry, exposed reinforcement, structural cracks, bulging, leaning, or earthquake-related damage.
- Do not treat a product recommendation or a repointing method as a substitute for diagnosing the wall and selecting compatible materials.
GSA’s contractor repointing specification includes a project safety plan and protective equipment; it is not a complete do-it-yourself safety standard for every repair. GSA repointing procedure.
