Remove the pot as soon as the upper chamber fills. These directions follow Bialetti’s Moka Express guidance; check your own pot’s manual for model-specific details.
How to brew coffee in a moka pot
- Fill the lower chamber. Add water to just below the safety valve. Do not cover or exceed the valve. Bialetti’s Moka Express instructions specify this fill level.
- Set in the funnel basket. Place the basket into the lower chamber.
- Add the coffee. Fill the basket loosely with coffee suitable for a moka pot. Do not press or tamp it down. Wipe any loose grounds off the rim so the pot can seal properly. Bialetti describes the Moka Express grind as medium-fine—gritty rather than powdery—and distinguishes it from very fine espresso grind on its New Zealand product page.
- Assemble the pot. Screw the upper chamber firmly onto the base. Bialetti’s manual cautions against using the handle as a lever to tighten it.
- Heat gently. Place the pot over low-to-medium heat. On a gas burner, keep the flame within the base’s footprint; avoid high heat.
- Watch the brew. Bialetti gives an approximate 3–6 minutes until ready to serve, depending on the Moka Express size and heat intensity. This is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed time for every stove or pot.
- Remove promptly. When the upper chamber fills, take the pot off the heat and serve. Do not leave it boiling: Bialetti warns that high heat or boiling can give the coffee a burnt taste.

Grind and filling
For the cited Moka Express, Bialetti recommends medium-fine grounds that feel gritty, not powdery. Use the grind guidance in your own pot’s manual if it differs. Keep the grounds loose and the basket untamped; the 2021 Moka Express manual also explicitly says not to press the coffee down.
Heat and timing
Gentle heat gives you time to remove the pot when brewing finishes. Bialetti’s 3–6-minute estimate applies to the Moka Express and varies with pot size and heat intensity; your actual time can differ. If using gas, do not let the flame climb the sides of the base.
Stovetop compatibility
The cited Moka Express product page lists gas, electric, and ceramic hobs, and says that this model is not suitable for induction. Compatibility varies among moka pots, so confirm the instructions for your particular model before using it on an induction hob.

Prepare a new moka pot and clean it after use
Before the first coffee
For a new Moka Express, Bialetti’s 2021 manual says to wash the parts with water, then make and discard at least three pots before drinking coffee from it. This is model-specific guidance; follow the first-use directions supplied with other pots.
After brewing
Bialetti’s help instructions advise disassembling the pot and hand-washing it in warm water. Follow the cleaning directions for your pot’s exact model and material rather than assuming that all moka pots should be cleaned the same way. The Moka Express manual also calls for checking that the safety valve and other components are present and in working order.

If the pot leaks, will not brew, or vents through the valve
Stop using the pot and consult its manual. For the Moka Express, Bialetti’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking that all components are present, the coffee is appropriate for moka and has not been tamped, the water is not above the allowed level, the pot is properly tightened, and the gasket is serviceable. Do not continue brewing if the pot appears damaged or is not functioning as directed.
