For most interior trim and baseboards, choose paint made for doors and trim—often sold as enamel—and select satin or semi-gloss based on the look and cleaning needs you want. The right product also needs to suit the surface underneath. Good cleaning, sanding, repairs, and any needed primer matter at least as much as sheen.

What paint should you use on trim and baseboards?

Start with an interior paint specifically labeled for doors, trim, or cabinets, and confirm that it is compatible with your trim’s material and existing finish. Trim enamel is a common option because it is formulated for these surfaces. Labels and technical data sheets—not the word “enamel” alone—tell you whether a product suits your project and what preparation it requires.

For example, Benjamin Moore describes its Coronado Door, Trim & Cabinet Enamel Semi-Gloss as intended for interior doors, trim, cabinets, and walls. Its technical sheet also describes repeated-washing durability. Those are manufacturer claims about a specific product, not independent comparisons or guarantees for all trim paints. Check the manufacturer’s current technical data sheets for the product you plan to use.

Other product lines may also suit trim. Sherwin-Williams says SnapDry can be used indoors and outdoors and is touch-dry in as little as one hour; that is a product-specific manufacturer claim, not a general drying time for trim paint. See the SnapDry product information.

Should trim paint be satin or semi-gloss?

Both satin and semi-gloss are available in trim enamels. Satin has a less reflective appearance; semi-gloss reflects more light. Choose by the appearance you prefer and the cleaning or wear claims made for the specific product. For example, Behr describes its interior satin paint as easy to clean and its semi-gloss as resistant to mildew, moisture, and wear. These are manufacturer descriptions, not a universal ranking of the finishes. Review Behr Premium Plus Interior’s finish information.

More sheen can make surface irregularities easier to notice. Inspect and prepare the trim instead of expecting a lower-sheen finish to conceal defects. Whichever sheen you choose, keep the finish consistent across the trim in a room unless you intentionally want a different look.

How to compare trim paints

Compare products using the details that affect your surface, application, and schedule. Manufacturer specifications differ by product, so verify the current label and technical data sheet before buying or painting.

Product information to compare Why it matters
Intended use and substrate compatibility Confirms whether the paint is meant for trim and suitable for the material and existing coating.
Sheen and stated cleaning or wear claims Helps you choose the appearance and performance claims that match the room’s needs.
Primer guidance Shows whether the surface or problem condition requires a compatible primer.
Cleanup method Identifies the manufacturer’s cleanup instructions. Benjamin Moore’s Coronado Door, Trim & Cabinet Enamel technical sheets specify water cleanup for the listed products.
Coverage and application conditions Supports estimating paint needs and checking whether the surface temperature and room conditions fall within the product’s instructions.
Dry, recoat, and cure guidance Helps plan coats and avoid handling or using the surface before the finish has developed its intended hardness.

Specific figures should not be generalized across a product family or paint category. Benjamin Moore & Co.’s 2022 Coronado Door, Trim & Cabinet sell sheet lists theoretical coverage of 400–450 square feet per gallon at the recommended film thickness. For the satin product, it lists tack-free time of two hours and recoat time of four hours at 77°F and 50% relative humidity. Those conditions and the manufacturer’s current instructions matter when planning a job. Read the Coronado product sell sheet.

Does trim need primer before painting?

Not every trim project has the same primer requirement. The existing coating, surface material, and likelihood of stains or discoloration all matter. Read the selected paint’s current label and technical sheet, and use a primer specified for the substrate or condition when the instructions call for one.

  • New or bare wood: Check the paint and primer instructions for the wood type and whether it may bleed through the finish.
  • Glossy or oil-based existing paint: Clean the surface and dull the gloss. The Coronado technical sheets call for appropriate primers for hard, glossy surfaces; Behr recommends a stain-blocking primer over oil-based or glossy surfaces.
  • Metal trim: Use a primer suitable for the metal if the selected product’s instructions require it. Behr advises priming metal.
  • Filled holes and cracks: The Coronado sheets direct users to spot-prime around filled nail holes and cracks.

Primer choice is not interchangeable across every surface. Confirm compatibility with both the substrate and the finish paint rather than choosing by a generic “all-purpose” label alone.

How to prepare trim and baseboards

Paint performs best on a sound, clean surface. Benjamin Moore’s Coronado sheets call for surfaces to be clean and dry, free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, soap, wax, scaling paint, water-soluble material, and mildew. Behr likewise instructs users to clean and dry the surface, remove loose paint, scuff-sand glossy areas, and remove dust.

  1. Clean and let the surface dry. Remove grease, grime, soap residue, and other contaminants using a method suitable for the trim and paint system.
  2. Remove loose or peeling paint. Scrape only what is loose, then feather-sand the edges so the transition is less pronounced. Do not leave dust behind.
  3. Dull glossy areas. Scuff-sand enough to reduce gloss, following the paint and primer instructions for the surface.
  4. Repair defects. Fill nail holes and cracks with an appropriate filler, then sand smooth and spot-prime where required.
  5. Apply any required primer. Match it to the surface and problem condition, including bare material, stains, or a hard glossy coating.
  6. Paint according to the product instructions. Observe the specified application conditions, coat guidance, and recoat interval.

If scraping or sanding older paint, control dust and avoid uncontrolled removal. Benjamin Moore’s technical sheets warn about lead dust and recommend lead-safe controls. For older homes, consult applicable local lead-safe guidance before disturbing paint.

How long does trim paint take to dry and cure?

Dry-to-touch, recoat, and full-cure times are different milestones. A surface that feels dry may not yet have the finish’s intended hardness. Benjamin Moore’s Coronado satin and semi-gloss technical sheets say optimum hardness and final sheen may take up to 30 days, depending on drying conditions. That is specific to those products; follow the current instructions for the paint you use.

Temperature and humidity can change the schedule. The Coronado sheets caution against application below 50°F and state that cool temperatures and high humidity extend dry, recoat, and service times. Their listed surface-temperature range is 50–90°F. Check your selected product’s current label for its own limits and drying guidance, and avoid treating a touch-dry claim as permission to handle, clean, or heavily use the finish.

What to choose for your project

  • For a straightforward interior repaint: Choose a trim- or door-labeled enamel compatible with the existing coating, then select satin or semi-gloss by appearance and the product’s stated cleaning claims.
  • For glossy or oil-based existing paint: Plan to clean and scuff-sand; use an appropriate primer if the product instructions or surface condition call for one.
  • For bare, stain-prone, or metal trim: Check substrate-specific primer requirements before applying finish paint.
  • For a tight schedule: Compare the exact product’s touch-dry and recoat instructions under your expected conditions. Do not use a touch-dry time as a measure of full cure.

No independent head-to-head test is established by the manufacturer materials cited here, so there is no evidence-based universal “best” brand. Product names and formulations can change; use current manufacturer documentation for the exact paint you select.
