To air up a woodworking workshop, first map where your tools will be used, then choose a compressor and pipe system that can supply the most demanding tool at its required pressure and airflow. A well-planned layout puts outlets within easy reach, keeps hoses out of busy walkways, and allows you to isolate and maintain the system.
This guide adapts the practical layout and installation approach in Craig Ruegsegger’s WOOD Magazine “Whole-Shop Air Install,” published March 19, 2025. Its figures are useful planning examples, not universal equipment specifications.
Plan outlets around the work
Sketch the shop and mark the places where you will use air tools. Position outlets so a short local hose can reach the work without crossing a busy floor area. Think about the routes people, vehicles, and materials take through the shop as well as where tools are stored.
For example, Ruegsegger’s two-car-garage layout uses outlets along the side walls, a hose reel near the overhead door for finishing and tire work, and a ceiling outlet above a central bench. Those are examples to adapt to your own work areas, not a required layout.

Decide where the compressor can sit before settling the pipe route. Its size and electrical requirements affect placement. The article cautions against powering the compressor with an extension cord; follow the compressor maker’s electrical instructions and ensure the circuit is suitable for the unit.
Choose the compressor for your air tools
Identify the tool with the greatest air demand and check its manufacturer’s required pressure and air consumption. A tool’s stated CFM is meaningful only alongside its operating pressure and usage pattern; also compare a compressor’s delivered CFM, duty cycle, voltage, and amperage rather than choosing by horsepower or tank size alone.

WOOD Magazine’s chart lists these typical tool requirements at 90 psi. They are the magazine’s 2025 examples, not specifications for every model:
| Tool | Typical CFM at 90 psi |
|---|---|
| Tire inflator | 1–2 |
| Brad nailer | 1–2 |
| Finish nailer | 1–3 |
| Die grinder (1/4 inch) | 4–7 |
| Carving pencil | 4–7 |
| Impact wrench (3/8 or 1/2 inch) | 5–8 |
| Finish sprayer | 7–12 |
| Orbital sander | 5–15 |
The article offers two sizing rules of thumb: allow about 1 horsepower per 3.5 CFM of the highest-demand tool, rounding up, and at least 2 gallons of tank storage per required CFM. For its example shop, it chooses a 30-gallon compressor for a 10-CFM orbital sander and notes that the selected unit could run on a 110-volt circuit. Treat those as the article’s examples, not guarantees that a particular compressor will run a particular tool adequately. Confirm the tool and compressor specifications and electrical requirements before buying or installing equipment.

Choose a pipe layout and material
Flexible and rigid pipe
The guide describes flexible and rigid aluminum pipe as options that can be combined. Flexible pipe can make it easier to route around obstructions and accommodate future changes. Rigid pipe is surface mounted and may suit a straightforward, fixed route. Compare both against the required airflow, mounting surface, obstacles, planned outlet locations, fittings, and how likely you are to reconfigure the shop.
For a small shop, the article says 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch pipe may be sufficient and suggests 3/4-inch where higher airflow is needed. This is not a universal sizing rule: confirm pipe size against the compressor, tool demand, run length, and system manufacturer’s guidance.

Short runs, central placement, and loops
A long dead-end run can lose pressure at distant outlets. A centrally placed compressor can shorten the runs, and a loop layout is another way to serve outlets around the shop. The source says pressure loss was not a concern in its example layout with less than 100 feet of pipe; that observation does not establish that every installation under 100 feet will avoid pressure drop. Actual results depend on the equipment and installation.

Connect the compressor to fixed pipe with a short flexible “jump hose,” as the guide recommends, to help isolate vibration. Place a filter or filter/regulator before the branches where it will remain accessible. Hot compressed air can carry water vapor that condenses as it cools; the filter described in the article captures water and debris, while the regulator sets line pressure.

Plan each outlet as a complete assembly: a pipe fitting, a drain valve at the bottom, and a coupler that matches the hose. Plug unused ports, and consider shutoff valves that let you isolate the whole system or individual drops for service.
Quick-connect plugs and couplers come in different profiles, including industrial, automotive, and Aro. Choose one profile and use matching components throughout the shop; the article discourages universal couplers. Check the profile on existing hoses and tools before selecting outlet couplers.
Quick Recap
Install, test, and maintain the system
- Prepare and mount the pipe. Follow the pipe and fitting manufacturers’ instructions for cutting, preparation, joining, and support. Secure runs appropriately and fit the planned shutoff valves, filters, drains, and outlets.
- Connect the compressor. Use the recommended flexible jump hose between the compressor and fixed piping, and follow the compressor maker’s electrical and operating instructions.
- Check for leaks. Ruegsegger’s example brings the system to 50 psi, switches off the compressor, listens for leaks, waits at least a couple of hours, and checks the pressure. Soapy water can help reveal a leaking connection. Treat this as the article’s method, subject to the instructions and pressure limits for your components; repair leaks and retest before routine use.
- Drain the compressor tank regularly. The article recommends regular tank draining to reduce rust in the tank and lines. Follow the compressor manufacturer’s directions for draining and other maintenance.
