5 Divisive Paint Colors Interior Designers Actually Love—and How to Use Them

Greige, brown, yellow, black, and pink can all work when their undertones, lighting, and surrounding finishes suit the room. Here’s how designers approach each one.

Greige, brown, yellow, black, and pink can all work beautifully on walls, even if each has a reputation that puts some homeowners off. The difference is rarely the color name alone: undertone, light, nearby finishes, and how much surface you paint all shape the result. These are five designer-favored directions, not a ranking or a consensus among all designers.

How to choose a color that works in your room

Interior designer Samantha-Jane Agbontaen puts the key consideration plainly: “I would never choose a paint color in isolation, since lighting, flooring, furniture, and other finishes in the room can completely change how it looks,” she explains. Before choosing between samples, consider the color’s undertone, the room’s natural and artificial light, the area you plan to paint, the existing wood, metals, and textiles, and whether the paint should recede or become a focal point.

As Richie David, CEO and president of Totally Home Furniture, observes: “The colors we tend to stay away from are often the ones we end up liking the most.” The five options below show how a less obvious color can feel considered when its specific shade and setting are right.

1. Greige: a quieter backdrop than plain beige

Greige—gray mixed with beige—can read as bland or dated when the shade feels flat. In a more nuanced version, it gives furniture, artwork, and materials room to stand out. Agbontaen prefers warmer, slightly muddier greiges over shades that skew yellow.

One example is Revere Pewter HC-172 by Benjamin Moore. The manufacturer lists its light reflectance value (LRV) as 55.05 and describes it as a neutral bridge between warm and cool tones. Branden Wells, CEO and founder of TrueCraft Construction, offers a more specific, subjective take: “At a light reflectance value around 55, it’s got just enough brightness to make a small room feel larger, yet not so much that it will show every fingerprint like a stark white would,” he says. That is Wells’s opinion about the shade, not a guarantee about how a room will feel or how the paint will wear.

2. Brown: choose the shade, not the stereotype

Brown can bring to mind dated interiors, but the family ranges from chocolate and tobacco to coffee and caramel. That breadth makes the exact shade important: a deep, complex brown can feel deliberate rather than dull, especially when it relates to the room’s wood and other finishes.

London Clay by Farrow & Ball and Urbane Bronze by Sherwin-Williams are examples named in the designers’ recommendations. Consider whether the brown is meant to anchor a room or add a smaller focal point, and look at it alongside the materials that will remain in place.

3. Yellow: soften the brightness with undertone and contrast

Bright yellow across every wall can feel too loud. Elena Navarro recommends muted butter, straw, and ochre instead, particularly in cool rooms or spaces with little natural light. “Muted butter, straw, and ochre shades have gray or green undertones that serve as neutrals, injecting warmth into rooms that are overly cool or receive little to no natural light, such as north-facing rooms,” she explains.

Navarro suggests pairing these yellows with darker woods and gold-toned metals. Hawthorne Yellow by Benjamin Moore and India Yellow by Farrow & Ball are named examples. Check the undertone and how it changes in the room’s light rather than relying on the color label alone.

4. Black: use it to define details or make a deliberate feature

Black paint can give doors, cabinets, built-ins, and millwork definition without making every wall dark. “When used correctly, black paint can be subtle and elegant while still making a bold statement,” says David.

Designers also suggest using black throughout a small room, but that effect is not guaranteed; it is their view, and the outcome depends on the space and its lighting. If you take that approach, consider eggshell or satin rather than a very flat finish, and plan more than one lighting option. Railings by Farrow & Ball and Tricorn Black by Sherwin-Williams are examples cited for this color family.

5. Pink: let dusty undertones do the work

Pink need not be bright or childlike. Navarro’s preferred dusty pinks have beige, gray, or clay undertones, which can let them function as soft neutrals. “Dusty pinks have beige, gray, or clay undertones and work beautifully as neutrals in a variety of spaces,” she explains.

These shades may suit a study, powder room, bedroom, or bathroom. Natural textures, dark woods, metals, and tailored fabrics can keep the palette grounded. Stolen Kiss by BEHR and Sulking Room Pink by Farrow & Ball are named examples.

How to test paint before committing

A color on a screen or printed page may not match the paint on your wall. Benjamin Moore warns that screen and printer colors can vary from the actual paint. Its guidance for Revere Pewter HC-172 is to apply a sample to a wall or foam board and assess it as the light changes through the day. The same practical approach helps you judge a candidate in its intended room and alongside the finishes that will stay.

  • Apply the sample to the wall or a foam board, following the manufacturer’s directions.
  • Look at it under changing light, including the room’s artificial lighting.
  • Compare it with nearby flooring, furniture, wood, metals, and textiles.
  • Judge the sample at the scale you plan to paint: a color on one door may feel different from the same color across four walls.
