Maccreanor Lavington has been appointed to lead the proposed student-housing element of a renewal project at Deptford’s Albany arts centre, while Witherford Watson Mann is leading the arts-centre refurbishment, according to a trade-press report published on 5 October 2026. The wider proposal pairs the venue’s renewal with student accommodation developed with Trinity Laban; the homes are intended to help fund improvements to the Albany, but the project remains at proposal and consultation stage.

What is the Deptford project?

The project is a proposed renewal of the Albany, a long-standing arts and community venue in Deptford, alongside student accommodation on part of its site. In an announcement on 2 July 2026, the Albany said it was working with Stories, Aviva Capital Partners and Witherford Watson Mann on the renewal. Proposed homes are being explored in partnership with Trinity Laban.

The Albany says its building faces rising costs, ageing infrastructure and outdated systems. Its stated aim is to keep the venue affordable and accessible, improve its facilities and make it fit for future generations while maintaining its place in Deptford. The Albany traces its history to the Albany Institute, founded in 1899, and says it has been part of everyday life in Deptford for more than 130 years. The Albany’s project announcement sets out the renewal ambition and the venue’s account of its history.

Which architect is leading each part?

The appointment detail comes from Facilities Management Now’s 5 October 2026 report, republishing Architects’ Journal. The Albany’s project page had said the student-home design appointment was expected to be confirmed later in the summer. The later report supplies the Maccreanor Lavington appointment; it should not be confused with the earlier project-page status.

Why are student homes part of the Albany renewal?

The accommodation is intended to support Trinity Laban students and contribute investment to the arts-centre renewal. Aviva says the partnership is exploring accommodation for around 300 students. That is an approximate capacity in a proposal, not a confirmed count of completed homes. The Albany says the partnership is expected to unlock half of the total renewal costs, with investment from the proposed homes reinvested in accessibility, upgraded facilities, a lower carbon footprint and flexible, reliable community spaces. Both figures describe stated expectations, not finalized financial or delivery outcomes. Aviva’s 3 July 2026 announcement describes the student accommodation proposal; the Albany’s announcement explains its funding expectation and intended reinvestment.

What is confirmed—and what remains open?

The sources establish the partnership’s proposal and the reported division of architectural roles, but do not establish planning consent, a final design, construction start, completion date or final financial terms. The plans should therefore be understood as a proposal under development, rather than an approved or committed construction scheme.

The practices have collaborated previously: Maccreanor Lavington says its 2018 Ryle Yard project at Eddington completed the north and west wings of a courtyard block, with Witherford Watson Mann authoring the south wing. That is precedent for working on the same wider project, not evidence that the Deptford scheme will use the same design approach or contract structure. Maccreanor Lavington’s Ryle Yard project page describes that earlier collaboration.
