CDOT’s Floyd Hill project is still under construction on an eight-mile stretch of I-70 between west of Evergreen and eastern Idaho Springs. Major rock-blasting operations that required traffic holds are complete, but lane closures, traffic shifts, ramp closures and overnight detours remain possible. For your travel date, check live conditions and current advisories before choosing I-70 or an alternate route.
Where the Floyd Hill project is—and how long it will continue
The project runs from mile point 241 near Colorado Boulevard in Idaho Springs to mile point 248 near Homestead Road, in Clear Creek County. CDOT lists the estimated project cost as $905 million, adjusted in 2025 for the project as scoped. Its current schedule targets completion in 2029, with westbound traffic expected to move to the new alignment by the end of 2027 and eastbound traffic by the end of 2028. These are agency targets and may change. CDOT’s construction page has the project limits and schedule.
What construction means for a drive now
CDOT says the major rock scaling and blasting operations that required traffic holds are complete. It may still need occasional blasting if crews encounter unexpected rock. Construction impacts can include single- or double-lane closures during the day or night, temporary traffic shifts and ramp closures, periodic overnight detours at the I-70/US 6 interchange, and brief full closures when needed for safety. Lanes and shoulders may be narrower next to barriers, and work-zone speed limits can be as low as 45 mph. The precise impacts depend on the date and work schedule.
CDOT says it aims to keep lanes and ramps open during peak travel periods, make closures responsive to traffic patterns, and build new road sections beside existing lanes where possible. That describes the agency’s approach, not a promise of congestion-free travel. A static advisory may no longer apply: for example, a notice describing May 2026 closures is not a current schedule.

Check conditions for your travel date

- Check CDOT’s lane-closure listing for scheduled construction closures, then recheck COtrip for conditions that may have changed.

On the road, obey posted work-zone speeds, stay alert for workers and shifting lanes, avoid unnecessary lane changes and phone use, turn on headlights, and leave extra following distance. These precautions matter especially where lanes and shoulders narrow beside barriers.
Should you take an alternate route?
There is no route-time comparison here that establishes a universally faster detour. The best choice depends on where you start and where you are going, current closures and delays, weather and road conditions, and the distance and terrain of the alternate.

In an October 5, 2026 report about fall-color and ski travel, KRDO quoted Stacia Sellers, CDOT’s Floyd Hill project spokesperson, suggesting that some southern Colorado travelers headed toward Breckenridge or farther west consider US 285 and Highway 9. Sellers said those drivers may face fewer impacts because they do not need to travel between Floyd Hill and Denver, where traffic is heaviest. This is an attributed option for some trips—not a verified faster route or a universal detour.
The same report recounts photographer Alec Sills-Trausch’s personal choice to travel south from Breckenridge over Kenosha Pass, through Bailey and Morrison, after seeing heavy I-70 traffic. His estimate of eight to ten extra minutes through Floyd Hill is one traveler’s anecdotal estimate, not a measured or generally applicable delay.

Before diverting, compare live conditions on I-70 and the alternate for your specific origin, destination and departure time. Consider the alternate’s terrain and weather as well as its distance; a route suggested for one trip may not suit another.

- A third westbound lane, operating as a full-time tolled Express Lane from just west of Homestead Road (Exit 247) to Colorado Boulevard/Idaho Springs (Exit 241).
- Realigned, straighter curves between the middle of Floyd Hill and the Veterans Memorial Tunnels, along with bridge reconstruction.
- A two-mile frontage road between US 6 and Hidden Valley/Central City Parkway (Exit 243).
- A relocated westbound US 6 on-ramp and an extended eastbound US 6 on-ramp to give slow-moving vehicles more room to merge.
- Interchange and intersection improvements, including roundabouts, plus Clear Creek Greenway Trail improvements and environmental mitigation.
- Two permanent air-quality monitors.
